My husband and I took a long time to build our house, 10 years by my count, 5 by his. Either way, we decided to plant small azaleas in the woods around the house. That's why 20 years ago, I planted two dozen $1 azaleas under the sassafras and pine trees in the front yard. We watered them in the drought years, fertilized them occasionally, planted new shrubs when some gave up the ghost, but overall, we let them be azaleas. A couple springs ago, I realized how unruly the shrubs had become, with those weird spiky shoots fighting for sunlight through the tree canopy. An unfortunate hairstyle for the belle of Georgia gardens. With a primer from Walter Reeves, our local gardening guru, I pruned the unruly branches and became more vigilant with the fertilizer.
We've been rewarded this year with the best azalea show ever.

Jason: we try to eat well, but to be honest, I only show the good stuff.
