Many of you responded last week to my story about the Laughing Girl Goes on a Picnic, submitted for the Salon Kitchen Challenge. The pictures show a young lady from the early 20th century on a picnic in the mountains and young men helping her across the stream.
I came across the pictures pasted in a photo album that belonged to my grandfather. Granddaddy Eggert was born in 1889 and died in 1978 and there were no who/what/where/when notes in the album, so the identities and location are lost to history.
When writing the story, I realized that I'm not a storyteller. Wracking my deadline-addled brain, I could not invent a fiction for the fresh-faced girl. I could guess at the storyline, but maybe I was missing something. Several commenters wrote about wanting to know the story of the Laughing Girl, so I'm offering it up as an Open Call to the outstanding fiction writers here at Open Salon.
Feel free to use the pictures in your story and tag your posts "Open Call: Laughing Girl" and I'll post the links to it from this story.
