The monkey made me do it- Who am I

Rate: 3 Flag

What does your name mean?

I'm Colleen, a name that means "Girl" in Gaelic.  It's approximately as original as leaving me with the sign on the bassinett at the hospital- Baby Girl S.

Peppermint is my online name, here and pretty much every other site I've signed up to since 2002.  I  had just arrived in South Korea, and a bit homesick when signing up for a site, so I named myself after a candy made  down the street from the house- peppermint knob.  Of course, a few weeks later, I became friends with a group of rowdy Kiwis from that site,  who put the filthiest  spin possible  on the name. Over the years, the knob got lost, but I've got friends, both virtual and offline, who know me as Pep or peppermint.

In what era were you born?  How does that define you?

I was born in 77, a little too late to really connect with the Gen X, but too early for the Internet generation- I guess that means I'm left with the task of defining myself, and that's a work in progress

Where do you come from?

I was born in a very small town in Newfoundland, but moved around Canada a lot as a kid.  My family settled down in St. John's when I was 12, and so far, it's the place I keep returning to.

What is your favorite way of dressing? Perhaps a favorite outfit?  Shoes?  Do you like to wear socks?  Do you color your hair?  Do you wear underwear?  Hats?

I would wear simple dresses every day, if  I could get away with it.  To most people that seems really fussy and uptight, but the way I see it, there's no matching, ironing or even tucking in involved with a dress.  That said, at the moment, I'm very comfortable in jeans and a sweater.

Who or what do you resemble?

I look a lot like my Father's side of the family, though I only really discovered that a year or so ago, when  I met them all.   I haven't changed an awful lot since this pic- I'm a bit taller, and my hair is less curly- that's about it.

Do you like art?  Who is your favorite artist?  Your favorite art work?

I do like art, though I couldn't begin to name a favorite artist or even work of art. Different things affect me in different ways, and it would be a bit like apples and oranges, really.

One that stands out in mind though, is  Janet Cardiff's The Forty-Part Motet.

Is there a film you think of often?  Has it changed you in some way?  How?

I am a movie fiend, and since I find sitting in a dark room with popcorn comforting, I'll watch just about anything.  In terms of ones I've that have done more than just provided a two hour escape from reality though, I keep coming back to  My Man Godfrey,  The Thin Man, Once,  Man on Wire,  nearly anything by Hitchcock, Pi,  Wings of Desire.

Vocation, avocation, passion?

I've recently applied to several master's programs for Library science partly because its one of a few fields left where being truly curious about the world is still encouraged, and because I can't imagine a better way to spend a career than making knowlege more accessible to anyone who cares to look for it.
