A Poem for the Season

Rate: 13 Flag

Christmas

One needn’t be Christian
To rejoice in the celebration
That marries the birth of a savior
With pagan rites and trees
And circles of green.

No doctrine can fully separate
The Yuletide feast
From eight flickering eyes
Watching at no great distance--
Or from other bright dots on the calendar
Named by tongues all foreign to each other.

No single creed can own
The arrival of the eternal,
And its light to human eyes,
And its confounding
Of the limits
That human understanding
Would seek to impose.

December the twenty-fifth
Is both less and more
Than the pious preach,
The godless gull,
And the hopeful heed.

It is the Nativity.

"No single creed can own the arrival of the eternal," is a singularly beautiful line. Thank you for sharing these happy tidings with us.
Enjoyed, this holiday mediation.
Esteemed Colleague:

This is the understanding I have of the Day. You explanation is the best I've read.

"December the twenty-fifth
Is both less and more
Than the pious preach,
The godless gull,
And the hopeful heed."

How true, indeed!

The arrival of the eternal,"

Yes! That is such an important message of understanding and acceptance. We are all one.
I love Thanksgiving and Christmas. Great food....lots of fun. Doesn't have to be more than that.

Enjoyed your poem, Paul, although the use of that word "savior" is like the sound of nails on a blackboard to me.
Peeling: Thanks!

Mimetalker: My sentiments exactly.

Jeanette: In so many ways indeed are we all one.

Frank: Lower case "s"; indefinite article "a." Those two things may make a difference. It means a lot to me that you came to have a look.
Simply lovely. A great gift in my inbox. Thank you for sharing. And merriest of Christmases to you and yours.
Merry Christmas, Paul and a great 2012!
Beautifully penned.
