Book (novel) - punk rock Muslims in Buffalo

Rate: 2 Flag
book The Taqwacores

Just read a really hopeful article in the NYTimes about young muslims reading a book -- The Taqwacores, by Michael Muhammad Knight - and it's helping them find their identity!Yay! I love books that help us find our identities.

What strikes me at first glance is that this is sooooo American. And it's about books and ideas and reading and self identity and self expression and I'm so glad -- for the ones who are reading it and for the rest of us too.

This is good news -- a small piece in the midst of the fear and bad news on every side. I love it that this underground book is having such a positive and powerful effect. I love it that it's about music and art and irreverence and bringing this all out into the open.

And, again, so American, now there's a low budget Indie film based on the book -- to be released next year. I want to see this film.

The book title uses "taqwa" (piety in Arabic) and "core" (for hardcore, punk, angry music).

Yay for them. Yay for us. Yay  for books, music, and films.

Thank you, rated. Yay indeed. Young Moroccans in Amsterdam, too, are writing and making movies. Thanks for spotting this!
thanks for the heads up about all this connects to something else and often something larger.
