WELCOME TO A CRIPPLE'S WORLD From here on out, this blog will carry regular contributions by the author (me), concerning how and where the disabled are inaccurately portrayed, or more often than not, simply ignored by the media. Please feel free to read my previous posts, as this is something of a "stream of consciousness" blog, and one entry very well may, and often does depend on what has already been said. Please be aware, I am un-PC, a bit of a smart ass, and as Rodney Dangerfield said in "Back to School" "I don't take shit from nobody" :-D If the things said here offend you, then so be it. I am a strong minded, strong willed man with an opinion. However, my opinion can and does change over time, as I mature and learn more about the world. So, if you are in the mood to argue, or see something you disagree with, bring it on. Just be forewarned that what I consider "offensive" is not what the rest of the world may find offensive, and vice versa. Okay? Okay. photo is "extreme sitter" Aaron Fotheringham, who can be seen on Youtube or his website, AaronFotheringham.com, where he performs many of his wheelchair skate ramp tricks

God it's good to be right. Or: I tried to warn you folks

Rate: 10 Flag

Ever since my first day on OS, I have been trying to warn people about the possible consequences and potential results of what was going to happen when our government, and the blind lemmings who follow politics, decided to try to reform insurance without first attempting to improve the actual medical care that we receive.

http://open.salon.com/blog/placebostudman/2009/10/28/your_stuff_is_not_more_important_than_my_life

And, in fact, at least one other person has tried to do the same thing.

http://open.salon.com/blog/mrsraptor/2009/09/14/do_you_know_the_difference_between_insurance_and_care

And, now the results of this whole economic-recovery-through-health-insurance reform debate is starting to come to fruition.

And some of us, at least the two of us who contributed to the posts above, are sitting back, toasting each other, and laughing our asses off, trying not to scream at the top of our lungs, with megaphones

WE TRIED TO TELL YOU PEOPLE! BUT NOBODY LISTENED!

Well, okay, there I said it...

God, it's good to be right...MUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......

(and thank you to the contribution from MrsRaptor, for granting me permission to cross link her post and her blog)

I am surprised... and yet not. I am surprised that people have been "blindsided" by what is undeniably happening with regards to "health care reform" and yet I am not surprised. "The best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray" and when we allow legislators to be paid by lobbyists on a frequent and regular basis we get what we pay for... which is nothing in comparison to what lobbyists pay for on behalf of their clients.
You'll probably be hearing crickets chirping; nobody likes to admit they've been scammed.
MrsR-

Well, yeah...

Deborah-

No, actually, we'll be hearing a lot of "you ARE insured, and probably wealthy, therefore you are the devil and your opinion and perspective doesn't count"

To which I have always responded, "well, yes, but all the money in the world hasn't managed to prevent me from being terminally ill"
I'm all for "health care reform" what does this have to do with that giant boondoggle that the senate is having spontaneous orgasms over. The Senate wants to put people in even more financial danger by forcing us to pay tribute to giant health insurance companies. All of the problems will remain, and the so called reform is just a huge windfall for the folks who pay them all so well at campaign time. I want real reform but it just isn't gonna happen. Speaking of which, time to go throw 75 bucks away just to get my meds refilled. This doesn't include the actual cost of getting the meds, just for a doctor to write four sentences on a quarter sheet of paper. Wow, what a value.
P.S. It won't even be the doctor that writes them, some minimum wage jr. college medical secretary will do that and rubber stamp the doctors name on it.
Bob... some of us have been asking that same question for months now... and being told that we have to get people insured before we can go after REAL health care reform.
Bob-

The sad truth is, the majority, even the greater majority of people aren't going to see any significant difference in health care pre and post reform. Those of us with chronic or critical care needs, even when we have insurance, are going to be getting the same level of care that we have always received, and, quite frankly, that scares the shit out of me.

Unfortunately, most people, who only ever have to worry about a broken bone or a sprained joint, hair loss, ED, or getting fat, just don't give a rat's ass about people who are less fortunate than them.
It's really depressing...Ditto what bobbot said.
Stud, while you and Mrs. R, and a lot more people including myself (I quit writing about this crap over a month ago), are right, I see no reason to celebrate. People are sick and dying while congress and the president are letting lobbyists write this fucking bill. I think I'll write another Big Dick piece just to get a fucking laugh!
scanner-

No celebrating here, my comments were meant as sarcasm. Sorry, I thought that was pretty clear. I'm actually in mourning for all of the sick and dying kids who are suffering while our government, and the people who blindly follow them, are all scrambling around looking for shreds of ink and paper.

And if that isn't a sad state of affairs, then people really are scrooges
Nothing will ever change.

Thoth-

I'm starting to think Humanity are all alcoholics, because we've adopted the AA definition of insanity...

"doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results"
Scanner... I am not the least "happy" about being proven correct. Matter of fact, I am bloody furious. I am also enough of a realist so that I was POSITIVE this is what would happen the minute that the President invited the health care industry to write the damn legislation back in May.
What would be an example of legislation that would count as “improving medical care” that you'd want to see before reforming health insurance?
Campaign contributions and lobbyists; they've done more to railroad democracy in favor of the elitists that own our government than any of the “socialist commie bastards” could ever dream of accomplishing.

With unemployment at 10% (average) where in hell are the “constituents” going to get all this money to give to the already obscenely rich insurance companies?

Oh, wait! Here's the answer! We could all ask for individual loans from China. At least we wouldn't be borrowing it to fund bullshit wars.
BTW - how was your kick-ass day rib dinner?
Kent... That's EASY...

For starters... we can require the FDA to actually verify the research done on new drugs by the drug companies. The FDA has merely been reading the research from the drug companies for more than 20 years... and in that time we have had an ever increasing number of drugs pulled from the market because "oh gee... we made a mistake and this stuff will kill ya instead of treat ya ailment".

Second... PROHIBIT drug companies from advertising their wares on television, radio, billboards, newspapers, magazines, etc... They spend billions on advertising for unnecessary products (witness the millions spent in the last 6 months on prime time advertising for medication for "thin eyelashes"... "thin eyelashes" is NOT a medical condition to start with)

Those two things ALONE would save a minimum of 106,000 lives a year.
Kent-

I believe MrsRaptor has done a post detailing her and my idea of REAL health care reform that should have been tackled before insurance reform was tackled.

Sadly, the things that President Obama has done by Executive Order that would cover quite a bit of real health reform were done mostly under the radar, and incredibly not covered by MSM.

But, to review....

1) Increase funding to the FDA and strengthen the oversight of the approval process of drugs coming out of BigPharma

2) Abolish BigPharma and put any and all medical R&D under the control of the NIH/NCI who really are the ones who do the majority of the research into real cures and effective treatments of serious ailments and disabilities

3) Break the monopoly that BigPharma has on the production and development of alternative treatment options, simply so there ARE alternative treatment options beyond those currently available

4) forbid BigPharma from interfering in the research that comes out of the NIH/NCI and university research programs, so the treatments that are made become available faster to those who need them most

These are just a few things that needed to be done before *I* will be comfortable with insurance reform. What does it matter if we're paying $500/year, or $5,000 per year for the warrantee (insurance) when the warrantee is covering a lemon (medicine and technology)
MrsR-

There is a prohibition on advertising of cigarettes on tv and other media, but marijuana is completely illlegal. I say, legalize marijuana and allow the tobacco companies to regulate and tax pot, the same way alcohol and tobacco is.

You can OD from alcohol and tobacco, OxyContin and the other pain killers, you can't OD on marijuana.

Am I the only one who sees something wrong with that picture?
Ah, ok. I don't think those are bad suggestions, but I wouldn't have called the Medical Care. I'd have called it R&D and infrastructure, which is important stuff but which I distinguish from the question of buying more equipment, assuring there are sufficient doctors, paying to have vaccines produced in bulk, negotiating low-cost fees, etc. I guess I think these things need to be done and insurance reform. Why does one want to precede the other?

(Also, I'm not sure if I agree on the FDA; what you suggest is one way to fix things. I think naving the FDA enforce detailed labeling and getting it out of the approval loop entirely might be another. I understand the motivation for wanting to get approval out of the commercial area, but I also think they hold up things that people might willingly try. This is a complex ethical area. I think I see wanting to take an unapproved drug as a victimless crime, though you're welcome to try to convince me otherwise.)
Kent-

Actually, I agree, taking an unapproved drug is a victimless crime (or at least the victim is willing to accept the consequences), but that does fall under #3 of my proposal of giving various options to patients

As for which comes first, it's a chicken and egg thing, really. Ideally they should be done on parallel tracts, but since the government insists on prioritizing everything, they had to choose which to do "first". Of course, the problem with that is that the government has ALWAYS prioritized cost over quality, so we are in a constant battle to keep prices reasonable while paying for the same, often dangerous, poisonous crap, that often times does more harm than good
The sun rises, the sun sets, and the Dems screw the middle class while kissing corporate ass.
None of those events should surprise anyone, or need predicting.
Paul-

They do a pretty damn good job of screwing the sick and elderly too when they focus on money rather than medicine and technology. All the money in the world does not make one impervious to cancer, and once you develop cancer, you are just about as likely to die from the side effects of the treatment as you are from the cancer itself.
Yes, right nothing can never change but we the people have strength to change it and again we the people who had done so many mistakes ourselves or let them do but still we can bring a big change. Chicago Attorney's
Yes, I have to agreed that we need to increase funding to the FDA and strengthen the oversight of the approval process of drugs coming out of BigPharma. - Data Recovery Expert
That marijuana use is safe and highly effective as a medication, and that hemp is the future of our non-petroleum based materials industry. Big Pharma and Big Ag are trying to synthetically remake everything on Earth so that they can patent and control it. Profit over sensibility?!?

I'm al for the reform of our healthcare system. I'm not for the takeover by the government. What inustry has the government taken over and ever run efficiently or even profitably? Amtrak? Nope. The Post Office? Well, they were profitable for awhile, but now? I don't think so. The IRS even seized and tried to run a legal Nevada brothel once. It went under. If they can't e even run a whore house profitably, what makes anyone think that they can do a good with our health care system?
Henry-

The point of the government being in charge of our utilities, police, fire, water, etc, is so that they ARENT used under a profitable model. The government is not *supposed* to make a profit from its citizens suffering. (I know, I know, it does, but intent and follow through are 2 different things)
Ahhhhh.. Only a fool would even consider any health care reform without major tort reform to remove the windfall income for lawyers built into our current system. Of course Obama is not considering anything that would reduce trial lawyer income. Maybe, using the GM example, Obama could just transfer 55% to 60% of all hospital and drug company ownership to trial lawyers.

It's no surprise a lot of scammers are sprouting like mushrooms everywhere. With the problems we face today in our economy, we should be wise not to be fooled with these kind of people.
