Restart Congress

There is a common refrain among bloggers, especially those of the conservative persuasion. I have been guilty of using it myself. How many times have you read a blog post bemoaning the fact that our government has moved so far away from the original intent of the Constitution? How many times have you read my complaints that Barack Obama is gathering more power than the Office of the President was designed to have? How many times have you read how I despise the way Congress operates in today’s American government?

As I was driving this evening, I happened to tune into the Rusty Humphries Show and he had a guest on named Chuck Woolery. Some of you may remember him from various television game shows, such as Wheel of Fortune. During the segment, Rusty asked Chuck Woolery about a Super Pac he and his business partner had started. It’s called Restart Congress and Chuck informed me of something I was not aware of. Did you know term limits were in the Articles of Confederation and the first draft of the Constitution? It surprised me to learn that.

Apparently, they were taken out because George Washington looked at the way the government was set up and how the Constitution was written and said there was no way anyone would sacrifice more than two or three years of their life, just to live in Washington and help run the government. He would roll over in his grave if he could see how Congress has morphed into the monstrosity it is today.

We have discussed term limits on Political Realities before. There good reasons, both for and against them. After watching how Congress operates in the last few years, I would humbly submit to you that their time has come. Chuck Woolery makes a great case for them in the video. It’s not a fancy video with a lot of graphics and sound effects, but he gets his point across. Let me know what you think.
