200 Year Nap Under the Island Mountain Glacier

Rate: 10 Flag

She grumbled a bit, turned over a few times, mumbled to herself. Too hot, then too cold. Her older sisters nag her, she really needs to get out more often, see the world, meet people. "Get some fresh air, you've been hiding for ages!"

"I guess I should get up out of this bed, it's been a while since I've been outside. Hell's bells, what's that smell?" she laughs."Oh, that's me, definitely time to get up, in a couple of more hours"

She turns over in her bed with a giant crash and shake. She ached all over. Like she was being squeezed in a giant hand. The pressure was killing her.

Further down the hall of their vast underground home she hears her sisters Kat and Hel running and laughing. They're planning their day, which way should they go, north or south, east or west, up or down. It's all a big game to them.

The little sister sighs, she doesn't find much fun in their games. She remembers the last time she went out to play. Mother made her go out. Everyone ran off, no one liked her, everyone feared her even the sheep, cows and lovely horses with their thick fur.

It was a strange day, that last time, the sky dark and full of smoke. The noise of people and animals running and screaming frightened her so much she ran back into her house and swore never to come out again. It was very scary out there.

"Little one," Kat called to her, "It's time"

"But I don't want to go, you can't make me!"

"Go on your own, or Mother will make you, trust me, it's better for them if you go now and get it over with"

"She's right, Little one, if you put it off and Mother has to step in and push you out it's worse. You know how she is when she's angry, things are always one hundred times worse when she's angry. So just go, run out for a bit, play for a while and make her happy. You do not want to get her angry, right?" said Hel.

Little one crawled out of her bed and stretched. She followed her sisters down the great hall to a small tunnel.

"Go that way," said Kat, "It's easy, just a tunnel, then snow, it's pretty. Go you'll like it"

"Okay, see you in a while."

She quickly ran through the tunnel, noticing the awful squeezing feeling lessened as she got further up. At last she hit the snow line, slowly she poked her head through, her flaming red hair draping over the snow.

"This is much better than last time," she thought looking at the sleeping farmhouses in the distance. "I'll just stay where I am in the snow and try not to cause too much trouble, I'm outside after 200 years, Mother's happy. This will do. If only people knew how complicated it is to be a volcano."

Eyjafjallajokull woke up last night after a two hundred year slumber deep under the snow.

This was so neat. A volcano, who knew!
Very clever. And what wschanz said: this tastes of the oral tradition.
