- Teacher
- Bio
- I am a middle school language arts teacher. I realize many adults consider this job among the most treacherous occupations, right up there with those "Most Deadliest Catch" guys on the Discovery Chanel, but I like it. This blog is a year of my adventures in the classroom laced with flashbacks of growing up a yogi in the US. I am no longer employed at the Catholic School where I wrote this book, but have moved onto more liberal pastures, whew!

Picture Day
Chapter 8
It’s picture day at St. Joseph’s. This means we
have a free dress day, so I can wear jeans! My excitement over this
issue has a long and sordid story. You see, the jean battle has
been going on for a while here at St. Joe’s, ever since… Read full post »

Transformation
Chapter 7
The story of a person’s life is so much more than the
moments we witness, much more than the judgments we have when we
see them at their worst or the smiles we give them when we share in
their best. Each child who comes to my class… Read full post »

Two Truths and a Lie
Chapter 6
I have a good look at the sixth graders as they present a
little exercise called Two Truths and a Lie. In groups of three
they pick a topic, and then decide which two in the group will tell
a true story and which one will make up… Read full post »

Rainbows and Butterflies
Memoirs of a Catholic School Yogi
Chapter 5
Meeting a new class of students is never an easy event for the
students or the teacher. The kids may have their new-teacher fear,
but that’s only one person to worry about. We teachers have
them all.… Read full post »

Back to School
Memoirs of a Catholic School Yogi - Chapter
4
Erin and I are going by school today to get my classroom
ready. We’re leaving my husband John to watch the Bills game
on the TV. He isn’t one of those obnoxious sports addicts who
must have the game on 24/7,… Read full post »

Forget the Road Not Taken
Fuck the Road Not Taken with its paths diverged and leaves no foot has trodden black.
I want a spaceship to take me past my inhibitions.
I would christen it, "The Fearless," and drag it up my steepest mountain of hopes and dreams with a tattered rope.
Then… Read full post »

I Wasn't Born a Yogi
Memoirs of a Catholic School Yogi -
Chapter 3
I wasn’t born a yogi like my daughter Erin. My family
hails from a mixed bag of Christian religions and beliefs, all of
which come with stories that attest to the power and convictions of
the matriarchal women in the… Read full post »

Would You Like a Muffin with Your In-Service?
Memoirs of a Catholic School Yogi - Chapter
2
It is 8:30 a.m. on the first day of In-Service Hell—yes,
Hell. I’ve figured out I don’t get to wait for old age
or an untimely death to take me to where the faithful believe I am
going; I only need… Read full post »

In the Beginning
Memoirs of a Catholic School Yogi - Chapter
1
This is when my year starts. At the beginning of August with
the letter, the letter that calls me back each fall to the
classroom. I am sitting on the front porch, looking out at the
oak-shaded cemetery across the street,… Read full post »

Lessons In Love
When a spiritual name is given by a guru to a student it
has a certain style or flavor that expresses the particular path of
that particular person. The name is a way of calling upon our
Being, our higher Self, to better identify ourselves. When I was
ten my guru… Read full post »
