FLASH FLOOD

Rate: 3 Flag

flooded backyard

This afternoon the skies opened up.  After our initial happy rain dance, it became very apparent this was anything but a happy event.  farmyard

Our yard is flooded, our pool full of mud, and our berm of rip-rap is undermined and downriver somewhere.  The repair time and cost will be high and mostly uncovered by insurance as we are not in a flood plain and therefore do not have flood insurance.  Deep cleansing breaths.  (Actually, ragged shuddering gasps and a break the rule Kiltlifter.)

after the flood

Finally, a photo of the aftermath (oh but joy it is forecast to rain throughout the night) and a few very amateurish videos.  Give YouTube time to do their upload thing.

arroyo

You know, despite it all, we all still very blessed.

Oh my God, PF, that is amazing. I've seen those summer monsoons in Scottsdale but never flooding...I'm so sorry, I wish I could come over with a push broom or towels or kiltlifter or something! But thanks for the amazing videos, just breathtaking. Keep us posted on your progress and let us know if there's anything we can do besides...watch!
I had no idea there was a disaster brewing in the country today. So sorry to see the damage that so much rain has caused in such a short time. I'm sending positive vibes your way that there will be no more heavy rainfall and that you haven't lost anything.
That's one of the scary things about the desert. It only rains 3 or 4 inches a year, but it's all at once. Please be careful!
Oh, dear! P_F, I hope things resolve for you as soon and as well as possible!
So, sorry to hear about this. We will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. L.
Yipes, honey! I'm sorry that your property took such a beating, but I am glad you and yours are safe.
What a shame. Please be safe as you take on the clean-up. The power of nature to take our possessions away from us in a heartbeat is indeed a sobering experience. (I suggest countering that with massive doses of Anchor Steam tonight.)
Lauren, I hope you and David are safe through the night. We have tornadoes and careening pickups on freeways, California defines disaster, and the dessert has abominable heat and flash floods. It's not for nothing the Navajos call those "male rains."

I too wish I could lend a hand with shovel and broom. xoxo
Thank you everyone. We're reeling but hanging in there. It's a good thing m skin have teeth.
Would there be such a thing as flood insurance in the desert? I hope so. My heart breaks for you this weekend.
Damn, darlin'. I just got back from some friends' wedding in the beautiful Santa Ynez valley north of Santa Barbara, where God was paying very close attention to making everything absolutely picture perfect for them and falling down on the job of sparing Rancho Laurena needless mayhem. I'm so sorry y'all have such a mess on your hands and would absolutely join a broom & bucket brigade tomorrow if I could. Yes, stay with the breath, but keep the Kiltlifter handy, too.
I don't know what to say other than my thoughts are with you...
I hope I didn't sound insensitive, PF, the journalist in me was just impressed at the photos and video...my "I'm so sorry" could read like an afterthought.
I didn't find you insensitive at all, Joan. I have thicker skin than that and I found you're "sorry" sincere. I just hope it's all cleaned up by the time we hit Greasewood in March!
How do you get all that mud out of a pool? Did it wipe out your kiln and glass area?
Studio area survived fine, a stern order to keep the garage doors closed and towels in place spared them. As far as the mud out of the pool, it looks like a complete pump out, clean up, and refill, all to the tune of around 800 Franklins. Since I have gobs and gobs of extra cash right now, as outlined in my recent woe-is-me post, I think I'll pay the man double.
Your pictures and videos are astonishing--and I'm sure don't capture the full breadth of the disaster.

Hoping for a return to dry weather soon so you can dig out.
I find the local gendarmerie look askance at any kilt lifting I might try. Hope your place gets dried out and cleaned out post haste!
The animals are alright, though a bit shell-shocked. I am working on a day-after post now.
We got the sound. You got the fury. What a difference a few hundred miles makes. When I plugged everything back in this morning, your plight was widely known already at O_S. What might you need? We're with you.
scary, scary, scary, but thankfully only affecting things and not people. Good luck to you.
Well, Joan, your journalistic instincts are intact. 12 News/local NBC affiliate is interested in our videos and might send a crew out. I guess I better scrub the mud from my ears!

Thank you again everyone. I wish you were all closer so I could take you up on your offers of help. We'd feed and libate you, maybe have a Christopher Guest movie night.

I've got to go, strange people are walking on my new beach.
