What will you do if we let you go home,
And the plastic's all melted,
And so is the chrome?
WHO ARE THE BRAIN POLICE?

What will you do when the label comes off,
And the plastic's all melted,
And the chrome is too soft?

WAAAAHHHHHH!
I think I'm gonna die . . .
I think I'm gonna die . . .
I think I'm going to die . . .
I think I'm going to die . . .
I think I'm going to die . . .
I think I'm going to die . . .
I'm gonna die . . .
I think I'm going to die . . .
I think I'm gonna die . . .
I'm going to die . . .
I think I'm gonna die . . .
I think I'm gonna die . . .
I think I'm gonna die . . .
Going to die!

WHO ARE THE BRAIN POLICE?

What will you do if the people you knew
Were the plastic that melted,
And the chromium too?
WHO ARE THE BRAIN POLICE?

It Can't Happen Here (1935) Samples

There was no more overwhelming actor on the stage, in the motion pictures, nor even in the pulpit.  He would whirl arms, bang tables, glare from mad eyes, vomit Biblical wrath from a gaping mouth; but he would also coo like a nursing mother, beseech like an aching lover, and in between tricks would coldly and almost contemptuously jab his crowds with figures and facts— figures and facts that were inescapable even when, as often happened, they were entirely incorrect.

Under a tyranny, most friends are a liability.  One quarter of them are "reasonable" and become your enemies, one quarter are afraid to speak, and one quarter are killed and you die with them.  But the blessed are the final quarter who keep you alive.

What was it that Pogo once said; was it, "We have met the Evil Empire and it is us?"

Or perhaps something close?

Thanks I'll have to take a closer look at your links when I have more time. A quick look is enough to realize that the current government is getting worse all the time although with Obama they do a slightly better job pretending to move in the right direction without doing so.
I've learned--from personal experience, through the lessons from the Hollywood Ten fiasco, to my years of teaching "complaint letters" in Business Writing courses--that we should be careful what messages we send in writing (or, today, on the Web, cell phones, etc.).

Firstly, whenever I indulge in articulate self-righteousness, I'm usually wrong. Second, one should never assume the audience one writes to is the audience that will subsequently exploit my words to my detriment (again, a lesson not yet learned by the techie toy memoirists). And third, if those we rail against are truly the enemies we imagine, they will OF COURSE use our own words against us.

Though it might not seem so to some who've sampled my Open Salon blogs, I do attempt to heed those warnings. A positive side effect of this is that many of the more event-targeted blogs have a longer shelf life than if they were merely peppery "tweet level" reactions to this person's misbehavior or that headline's topicality.

Still, if I take my own stance in THIS blog seriously, I do cringe at the prospect of my own words (and yours) being used against us in the America slouching in our direction. As scarcifyin' water and unsullied land, population growth, and climate change are subjected to the heightened war between corporate control devices and Robbespierean frenzy, it seems inevitable that (to shamelessly update Gil Scott Heron) the next kristallnacht WILL be Tweeted.

Again, however dire, dangerous, and depressing, THESE are indeed the good old days. By comparison to what's too soon to come.

And a Happy New Year to you!
