Thinking Cold Thoughts on Another Hot Day

Rate: 9 Flag

It's another 90+ degree day in Northern Illinois.  I've lived in this part of the country for close to half of my life, and during that time I don't think we have ever had this many days above 90 degrees as we've had this year.  It's tempting to sit inside and sulk, but I have decided to think "cool" thoughts today.  I'm thinking back to this past December, which was the beginning one of our snowiest winters in recent memory.

 Ah, remember when....

Almost makes me long for a hot buttered rum!
gah, you are a cruel beast Steve. Today we reach the second longest string of +100° days in recorded history, only bested by that horrid summer in 1980. Temps are scheduled to hit 107° for several days later on this week. I won't tell you what our electric bill was last month, but it will be higher next month as we continue to hibernate indoors. I'd love some snow right about now. Cruel, cruel friend.
Barry, I rather dread our next electric bill, but I can take solace, I suppose, that it would have been far worse if we lived 800 miles to the southwest. I've been following the weather down your way, and I must say has been a summer to remember. As I recall, the summer of 1980 had over 40 straight days of 100 degrees or more, and nearly 70 during the entire season. You may match that at the rate you're going. I hope not.
One thing's for sure, Steve you could have never got those pictures in Texas could you. Personally I've been channeling that first winter I was here in Missouri....during the great Ice Storm, when I was reduced to cooking over an open pit in the frozen ground.

Yup...I'm feeling cooler already.
Torman, when was your first Missouri winter? I traveled through Missouri the week of Christmas, 2000, just after a big snow and ice storm. I also lived in KC in the mid-80's, during a particularly snowy couple of winters.
I think it was '07 I think. We have only been in Missouri for four years now....four long...cold....years. Before that I was blissfully living in Texas where when it dropped below thirty-two they called out the national guard and declared a state of emergecy.
Just returned from a cold Northern Europe --had to wear my leather jacket-- to hot and humid Miami. Thanks for the return to cool. (And P Jr is adorable!)
*sigh*
we are supposed to go to the fest tonight. There is no way, I'm just about fainting sitting down in here
Ha! I am with you here in rural PA. My thermostat still said 91 degrees last night at 6pm.
I have central air so I am not bitching too much but I like summer and want to go outside too..
did take a bike ride this morning as early as possible.
I like the snow pictures but I am not ready to go back yet! thanks for the uplifting post.
Ah, the placebo effect.

Well into May, we had overnights in the teens and recently Roswell has had a record 38 days above 100. The climate has gone catawampus in New Mexico.

We're getting our (so-far feeble) monsoon about now, and it's 68 with cool downdrafts as I write this. Then I read how so many fellow OSers are made miserable from their "dome of high pressure."

That is some coincidental turnabout in climatic patterns.
whew. thanks for the cool breeze off the snow! it's not as hot here as it is where you are, but the humidity is unusually high and nasty! i love winter *and* snow, so you got me with this one. :)
Procopius,
What beautiful photographs, and I love the hat that Procopius Jr. is wearing! The heat is on in Chicago too, but I am rather enjoying it.
Lea, Norway sounds particularly inviting on a hot day like today!

Julie, I'm sighing with you.

Rita, I'm a bike rider as well, and was out this morning by 7:00, before the nasty heat settled in. Like you hinted, it's when the sun goes down and it is still hot that is the most distressing.

Stacey, I was staying at 9,000 feet a couple of summers ago in Cloudcroft, NM. That was quite nice, especially considering how close it is to the extremely hot desert floor nearly a vertical mile lower in elevation.

Candace, that humidity has been brutal here, too.

Starving Student, you can thank his mom for finding that cool hat. I think the heat bothered me a lot less when I was still a starving student. Thanks for stopping by!
Steve, when we have blizzards we think of the warmth of summer and when we get hit with heat waves winter doesn't look so bad! In my area I would say that last year was far more brutal in terms of extended heat compared with this year. We'll see what August brings, but just as an example today had decent weather and not anywhere as hot as two weeks ago.
Ah!!! Beautiful, cool, photos! Be glad you moved! It was 110 degrees here today, but it should get down to 103 by this weekend. I'm trying to remember why I live here!
John, it's possible that come January I'll look back on this summer with longing, but I doubt it!

RoH, y'all are having a heck of a summer. I lived in Texas in 1980, the hottest year of my life, but this summer seems to be approaching that hellish one down there. Ugh.
