Susan, do us a favor & stop wearing pink.

Rate: 26 Flag

Susan, of the Susan G Komen for the Cure, you and I need to have a talk.  My eyes used to well up with tears whenever I would see one of your commercials advertising the Race for the Cure (the name of which you have taken other organizations to court for using if there were any smiliarities in their fundraiser's name and yours).  Those women and their family members giving their testimonials on television take me back to when I was six years old, and my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and the subsequent memories of her treatment and the emotional scars that still exist for us all.  They take me back to when I was nine years old, and there was a scare that it had come out of remission.  They take me back to my senior year in college, when another scare occurred, and once again, two years ago, when we had our closest call to date that involved a very invasive biopsy and a fight with the insurance company.  They remind me of my own vulnerability and that I am one of the luckiest people on earth to still have my mom.

I have been proud to support the cause and talk to people about the need to Educate.  Advocate.  Eradicate.  I have been proud of entities such as yours that support women.  You have supported women.  You have claimed your unending support for them, no matter their race, religion, financial status, location, sexual orientation, or political affiliation.  Until now.  Now, you have betrayed women.

It was (finally) publicly announced - about two months after the decision was initially handed down - that you, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, are no longer giving grants for breast cancer screenings and care to poor and underserved women who use the care given at Planned Parenthood facilities.  Your reasoning is a matter of policy.  You have conveniently just revised your policy regarding the awarding of grants so that those organizations who are currently under investigation by legal bodies such as Congress may not receive your funds.

Because of our Congress's latest and greatest witch hunt instituted by those in this country who view women as people who do not deserve proper medical care, who should have no authority in the decision making process regarding their own bodies, who should remain under the thumb of an archaic and mythological moral code, who are no more valuable than their the number of children their wombs can bear, who are nothing more than disposable and do not deserve the same consideration as men in regards to medical care, you have denied these women access to life saving care.

Are you now of the same mind that if women can't afford it, they don't deserve it?  Are you now of the same mind that the health of all women don't matter?  Are you now of the ilk that discriminates against women under the guise of following procedures?  Whatever you are, Susan G. Komen, you have abandoned your cause to save the lives of women regardless of their status.  A poor woman's life is no less valuable than my mother's or mine, but because a woman is poor, she will more than likely not receive the preventative care she needs - all in thanks to you and your "policy."

Your decision to modify your policy so that it coincidentally affects Planned Parenthood is a-moral, unconsciounable, and plain wrong.  You have effectively disenfranchised those whom you seek to save, and turned yourself into a right wing political entity, whether or not that was your intent - although something inside of me says that it was based upon your representatives' behavior regarding this matter.  I will no longer support you, Susan G. Komen.  So, do us all a favor, and stop wearing pink.

*To clarify, I am aware that Susan G Komen is deceased.  I speak personally to the organization as a whole, using her name as its representative as that is how people identify it.

You mean well with this post, but just so you know, Susan Komen passed away in 1980. Her sister promised her she would do everything possible to fight and find a cure for breast cancer, and the foundation began. Things got iccky, not because of Susan, who never even knew of its existence.

For more research on the Komen foundation, which has been a primary target of Breast Cancer Action since 2002, check out
http://bcaction.org/

There are way way way more politically incorrect actions on the part of Komen, and they dishonor Susan, who did nothing more than suffer and die from breast cancer, by using her name and story.
I do know that Susan passed away from this disease and that is why this organization was created. It reflects poorly on her because they do it under her name and dishonor her memory with this completely irresponsible decision. Her family could attempt to stop it, but I don't see that happening.
Oryoki Bowl posted on this same topic. Thanks to you as well.
I just do not know how they can do this. I really can't and if Susan was alive she would not be happy.
HUGGGGGGGGGGGG
You're welcome, Keri.

Same here, Linda & by the way, I have hat like yours :)
I read about this via FB earlier this morning. I used to support the "go pink" products every year, but I think that my limited funds will be best served elsewhere. Perhaps donating to Planned Parenthood will be a better place. I know it won't be much, but maybe every little bit helps.
Good post. I'm with you.
I'm very sad to learn about these dishonorable practices, but glad to have the information, thank you! I will not support the pink any longer. (Never did much like the darn color, anyway!)
Send your money to support your local chapter of Planned Parenthood. I have been doing this for decades. Every time I hear about another government cut to their programs, I try to up my contribution. And I'm lucky enough to work for a company that will match my donation when I do it through payroll deduction.

A-F***ing men! What the hell, that's all I can say. If you're poor, I guess you're not valuable enough for the organization. As if there weren't enough people willing to throw women under the bus.

You are so right on - I think dark brown would be a more appropriate color for those ribbons.

A great many people agree with the decision to stop supporting the foundation. Personally, I always felt they pink-washed breast cancer a bit too much.
Brava!

Pls see my take on this disgrace.

I'll have it posted by 7am Turrsday.

I love how you've dealt w this here. My take may be from a slightly different perspective.

This is NOT the first time the SGK has knuckled under to bully-boys.

Thank you, thank you! -R-
Razzle, if you were aware when you wrote your post that Susan had passed away, and you were concerned about how the foundation, in your view, dishonored her name, are you honoring it or dishonoring it when you call her out in your post title, a woman who suffered and died from breast cancer thirty years ago, suggest that she "stop wearing pink", and that you and she need to talk? Maybe you thought this a humorous introduction to a serious issue, but as a breast cancer survivor, I found it diminishing and disrespectful to a woman who lost her fight.
Righteous, R.D. Thanks for the further info, too. I love the way you addressed it as a one-to-one, making it personal. And I agree that the pink has definitely taken on a greenish hue in these last few days. Hmm..maybe that color mix will produce RP's dark brown? R, girl.
Good post. That was the last straw for me. The damned religions and Big Money are taking over the freakin' government.

I'm startin' my own damned religion.
greenheron, I did not think addressing Susan herself was or is cute or amusing in any way, shape, or form. I was aware that Susan G Komen was deceased - AS I STATED IN MY RESPONSE TO YOU and clarified in my blog after reading your remark. I think you fail to see that, whether or not you like it, she is directly associated with this decision because her name is the Foundation. The SGK for the Cure has run one of the most successful capitalist ventures known to the history of this country under her name. That is not my problem. You fail to see that I directly addressed your criticism and said that by using her name, I was identifying her organization. It is hers because it is under her name. I am not the one dishonoring her, the ones who run this profitable scam are. This foundation was set up with the best of intentions and to a great thing, but I would venture to say that she would be disappointed in many ways by their actions. This is your issue and I have done nothing to dishonor a woman who suffered tremendously, yet died, and has had her name used for profit. As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor and someone who has had to face the realities of her mortality because of this disease since she was SIX YEARS OLD, I do know what I am saying and I think you fail to see that I was addressing the organization that functions under her name because of your own pain.

Thank you everyone for your comments.
Furthermore, greenheron, there are other bloggers on this site who have addressed Susan G Komen as an individual in their titles, and I don't see you reacting in the same way, or even commenting on their blogs. Care to explain?
Excellent and passionate post. You rock and you're awesome!!!!
