- Bio
- I'm married with two daughters and have been teaching at a state university in a red state for 21 years. My blogging covers a lot of issues but I'm a progressive kind of guy who tends to focus on political process, conservatism, and religiosity. Living in the Bible Belt gives me a little different though not necessarily more friendly perspective on conservatism. I also get in the occasional sports post.

A federal judge overturned the gay marriage ban adapted by California as a result of Proposition 8. Judge Vaughn Walker was both comprehensive and direct.
Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence show… Read full post »
In "Letter from Birmingham Jail," Martin
Luther King criticizes white Southern ministers for responding
to the civil rights movement in Birmingham with "pious
irrelevancies and sanctimonious trivialities."
Unfortunately for Kagan, that's pretty much what she got from

Buried in the South Carolina's The State's
lengthy report on the l'affaire Mark Sanford is a little nugget on
the potential for Sanford to have multiple mistresses.
In their morning meeting, State editors decided to immediately inform the governor and his inner circle about the e-mails.

Being away from home, I talked on the phone about Michael Jackson's death for an hour plus tonight with my teen-age daughter KC.
It's KC's first BIG celebrity death and she was eager to talk about Michael Jackson's early career, Thriller, The Wiz, and his seeming decline over t… Read full post »
The "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher interview in Christianity
Today reminded me of Dick Cheney on Fox--all right-wing id all the
time. In case anyone wondered about the right being homophobic,
here's Joe on gay people:
In the last month, same-sex marriage has become legal in Iowa and Vermont. What do

It sounds like the Republicans are starting to try to pull
themselves off the bottom.
Generally, people in government call for a commission when things
go really bad and they don't know what to do about it. One way to
tell that things are going horribly for the Republicans is that
they're… Read full post »
I have to admit that I wasn't as put out as a lot of left-wing people by all the anti-Obama tea parties. My spouse among others was very cranky about the whole tea party idea. Of course, street theater is not exactly the most effective politics in the world, but I've… Read full post »
One of the things I found as a Hillary supporter during the Democratic primaries was that it is very difficult to get a handle on Barack Obama. Obama initially had cache on the left because of his early opposition to the war, but he also had a magic with moderate Democrats… Read full post »
From the hills around Pikeville to the river towns on the

University of Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie going to be

I wouldn't pretend to have opened any windows into the soul of
Glenn Beck. Still, it appears that he's experimenting with
justifying violent, terrorist-type acts in the Age of Obama.
A few weeks ago, I put up a couple of brief

revolut… Read full post »
