African churches denounce children as ‘witches’

Rate: 11 Flag

I thought this a pretty good post, for a Sunday morning. It is yet another example of how people pick and choose parts of the bible to suit their needs. This time it is for some zelots to force their will on children, in this case labeling them witches causing great suffering and death.

There is even a Sarah Palin link if you look far enough into it. Remember last year when Palin and McCain were running for the white house? Sarah Palin had a witch hunter minister from Kenya who proclaimed that Sarah was chosen by God to lead the State of Alaska;

QUOTE:"The pastor whose prayer Sarah Palin says helped her to become governor of Alaska founded his ministry with a witch hunt against a Kenyan woman whom he accused of causing car accidents through demonic spells.

At a speech at the Wasilla Assembly of God on June 8 this year, Palin described how Thomas Muthee had laid his hands on her when he visited the church as a guest preacher in late 2005, prior to her successful gubernatorial bid.

In video footage of the speech, she is seen saying: "As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he's so bold. And he was praying "Lord make a way, Lord make a way."

"And I'm thinking, this guy's really bold, he doesn't even know what I'm going to do, he doesn't know what my plans are. And he's praying not "Oh Lord, if it be your will may she become governor," no, he just prayed for it. He said, "Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And that's exactly what happened."

She then adds: "So, again, very, very powerful, coming from this church," before the presiding pastor comments on the "prophetic power" of the event."

Now read this story about the witch hunters below and wonder about that church in Alaska. It kind of makes that Preacher of Obama's kind of mundane compared to these freaks. -Ric

Pastors accuse thousands of children, leading to torture or death

EKET, Nigeria - The 9-year-old boy lay on a bloodstained hospital sheet crawling with ants, staring blindly at the wall.

His family pastor had accused him of being a witch, and his father then tried to force acid down his throat as an exorcism. It spilled as he struggled, burning away his face and eyes. The emaciated boy barely had strength left to whisper the name of the church that had denounced him — Mount Zion Lighthouse.

A month later, he died.

Nwanaokwo Edet was one of an increasing number of children in Africa accused of witchcraft by pastors and then tortured or killed, often by family members. Pastors were involved in half of 200 cases of "witch children" reviewed by the AP, and 13 churches were named in the case files.

Some of the churches involved are renegade local branches of international franchises. Their parishioners take literally the Biblical exhortation, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

"It is an outrage what they are allowing to take place in the name of Christianity," said Gary Foxcroft, head of nonprofit Stepping Stones Nigeria.

"They are seen as spiritually powerful because they can detect witchcraft and the parents may even pay them money for an exorcism." That's what Margaret Eyekang did when her 8-year-old daughter Abigail was accused by a "prophet" from the Apostolic Church, because the girl liked to sleep outside on hot nights — interpreted as meaning she might be flying off to join a coven. A series of exorcisms cost Eyekang eight months' wages, or US$270. The payments bankrupted her.

Neighbors also attacked her daughter.

"They beat her with sticks and asked me why I was bringing them a witch child," she said. A relative offered Eyekang floor space but Abigail was not welcome and had to sleep in the streets.

Members of two other families said pastors from the Apostolic Church had accused their children of witchcraft, but asked not to be named for fear of retaliation.

The Nigeria Apostolic Church refused repeated requests made by phone, e-mail and in person for comment.

Witchcraft and the existence of witches is a major part of the culture in many African countries, just as "demons", wiccans and witches are quite active in certain American locations. Hell, we have practicing witches and organized covens everywhere, including the prisons!

Here are the Google search results in the .edu domain for African witchcraft: The field is full of academic interest in this issue.

There's equally no shortage in the .edu domain for studies and articles on witchcraft in Western cultures and countries.

America's Wiccan groups are subjected to forms of hate speech and could possibly be subjected to increasing violence. Let's also not forget Sarah Palin's ability to whip up an anti wiccan frenzy in a crowd.

Here's an article about violence against wiccans at a US military installation in Iraq. And yes, there are practicing wiccans and their families in the US military.

This is a scary topic in which the potential for mindless violence applies in America as it does in African countries, and you are very brave to bring it up! I hope that these links allow people to take the study further.

Zumapick and rated!
Sorry for the length of the comment: It's just the old broke down sociologist coming out to play!
More horror in the name of god. The really shocking thing about this story is that it doesn't shock or surprise me one bit. Committing hideous crimes in the name of god is par for the course. I'll bet that this poor kids parents had to fork over a chunk of cash to get the recipe for exorcism juice too.
Hey Bob! I just happen to have that recipe and for $19.99 I'll share it with you..
"Save the little children!" Good God, Ric! Scary stuff!
I'm in contact with a man in the Akwa Ibom state of Nigeria who runs a home for these children. The injuries of the children who are taken to the refuge are absolutely horrific. He's agreed to do an interview with me which I'll publish on here as soon as I get around to sending him the questions.
Excellent post Ric though horrifically sad. Still it must be exposed and brought to light so that it can be stopped.
Acid, dude. Man, there's no limit, once you're evil, is there?
