The real problem with OS

Rate: 26 Flag

I just figured it out, this fascination with OS and its inherent problem.

Most of the great OS writers are stumbled upon by happenstance. Other times you will get an invite to check out someone's prose.

But the problem lies with the inadvertant finds. Just when I think I don't have enough time to read another post, my peripheral will spot an inviting comment. Basic human nature forces me to open that post. And my not enough time has turned into another 90 minutes of reading.

It's those little discoveries that I have come to love and hate. Love finding a writer by accident only to learn he or she has so many wonderful posts that I haven't read. I hate that I will never have time to read them all or that their work will lead me to another undiscovered whose complete work I will never have time to consume.

So, if I have added you as a friend, it is with every intention to return and read all of your stuff as soon as I get time.

That is my problem, not OS's.

Until yesterday, I thought you weren't reading me because you thought my blog made my ass look fat!" You identified and put your finger on it (not my ass, the inherent problems) without exhausting the whys......(we've been doing that for the past couple of days!). Rated.
I find I have this same problem. Just not enough time to get through all the amazing stuff here. When I start digging through the archives, I find I have spent most of my day here and my work is piling up higher and higher! With that said, have an amazing day... I must be off!!!! :)
I think it's a common problem here, (un)fortunately. It's like when you finally realize that no matter how many books you read, you'll never be able to read ALL of them. Both joyous and disheartening.

I'll send out an e-mail for my "good" ones .

Rated for stating it well.
You nailed it. I intend to read for only a few minutes, and then I spot an intriguing title and it's all over. Oh and the guilt! People blogwhore me and then I don't have time to read, and when I do, they've written three more posts. I think I need a 12-step program for OS addiction. Or less of a real life.
Indeed! There is simply too much good writing and too little time. I find myself saying - okay I'll just read this one post - and then hours and multiple links later I'm still sitting here. Unlike at the bar, however, there is no one to cut me off. Sigh.
and on top of that, you still wake up with a hangover, dustbowl! ;)
If I understand you correctly, Rijaxn, you're hinting that Open Salon would be less problematic if the quality of the posts and comments weren't quite so high. I agree, and I'm doing my best to tackle that challenge.

Very, very true. I also have the problem of wondering whether or not to comment and rate old posts. I don't know if the author would see that as old news. Excellent point!
This is so very true! There are so many people on this site that I love reading (you, of course included!! How's your tooth by the way?). A lot of the same people make comments to my posts and sometimes I don't post comments to theirs and that makes me feel like such a bad person, like they got me something for Christmas and I just chose to forget them. But I don't forget them! I worry about it and feel bad as I go through the other parts of my days. I love this place. I love the writers I read. For everyone out there... I LOVE YOU!!! (I promise I'm not drunk!)
I sympathize. Sometimes I want a few extra hours in the day to sit and read all the good stuff on OS. It's especially bad when I realize I should be doing *real* work instead of reading blogs. Kind of like now.

Sometimes I find a great post that went unnoticed from a month or two ago, only to see that the author hasn't written anything again. Those are the hardest to stumble across.
Absolutely, positively right.

And, I think the problem is exacerbated right now because of the holidays.
OS has become *the only thing* I find time to read---after scanning the NYTs each morning just to make sure we haven't blown up the planet, yet---and, still, I'm not getting to one tenth of all the great posts!
High class problem to have, I guess.
maybe OS ought to divide itself into sections--like politics, business, health etc--that way, we could have more pages with more writers on the front,
MTN.. You are right, but it's a problem I enjoy having. Call me a masochist.

Jess D. Facts... My tooth is back in place(after sanitization). Thansk for remembering.

Jeffrey D. Kankakee has changed. I returned home (1997)after 22 years in Calif and found my home nothing like I remembered. I was an MD at St Mary's Hospital at age 15. That's MD as in mad dishwasher.

For those who suggested listing posts according to genre, I think i would lose a lot if I only read my interests. Another hi-lite of OS is that so many writers are so gifted that I enjoy their writing style more than the subject. I find myself reading and enjoying posts about topics that would not normally interest me.
Hope that makes sense.
OK, I'll read just one more post and that's it. That was a good one! OK maybe just one more, I promise. Man, she sure knows how to write. Gotta get some sleep. One more and I'll quit, absolutely. Oh, my favorite writer just posted, shit. OK, I know I can't sleep with that left unread, but that is definitely it for today. It's three A.M. asshole, go to sleep! Oops, there's a link to Freaky! Don't these people ever sleep?!! Alright, this is the last one........
I agree completely. Before I found OS, I would get on-line to check my news feed and end up spending hours reading world news/science/health/politics, etc. Now I get on OS, just to peek, and spend hours a day reading about trolls/whores/squirrels/etc.

Michael Rodgers

BINGO Michael.
I'm sure each users dig is different...for me it's "Most Read" and new writers which usually covers my favorites and opens my OS world to unexpected finds.

I try not to hit on obviously whorish (just picked that up here) headlines because I usually find the party inside is not as exciting.
But I do hit on posts when I see writers I like have been there.

Lately, Ive been trolling the "Most Recent" and commenting on newbies work since I know how hard it is to put yourself out there.

And like you....I have a problem with time.
yep.

since I found OS, my bedside reading material has languished untouched. Other posts have addressed suggestions for categories, navigation, etc. so I won't get into that. But...

for the record, I think it is NICE and appreciated when people go back and read old posts.
Great observations R. And VERY true. It's like trying to get out of a bookstore once you're in. The prices are much lower though.

I feel your pain, but I have three up on you. I spend so much time here now, my wife is always pissed (although that's not terribly uncommon after 35 years of marriage), my daughter is distant, and my best friend Chewey (see avatar) barks at me like I'm the demonic cat in the backyard every time I get near myPC.

Oh the sacrifices we make :-)
Here's what I like about OS plain and simple: the community. Is it valuing words and ideas over ROI and monetization? Yes, I do believe it is. I've been blogging for four years and it's clear that while there are many many many many many more (and add another many, please) people blogging, not all that many of them have anything worthwhile to say. You all do...thank you very much.
