At the AFL-CIO, volunteers earn points toward cool… budget clout
TechPresident reports that the AFL-CIO’s Super PAC, Workers’ Voice, is rewarding its volunteers with a points system: registering gets you 50 points, and agreeing to receive text messages scores 14 more.
Amass enough points, and you can start redeeming them. But not for the usual swag like branded water bottles, thermoses and jackets. Instead, you can cash in 700 points (equal to knocking on 100 doors) and place an online ad supporting Barack Obama.
If you aren’t a partisan, you may be baffled at why that would constitute a reward. But it reminds me of Daniel Pink’s observations on motivation. Rewards that magnify the impact of your volunteer work may well pack a more solid punch than yet another T-shirt or button.
