My roots are in San Francisco and later Baltimore, where I went to high school and college. I stayed on the move, living for a while in Texas, several years in a small town in Germany, and then several more in Massachusetts, working on a Ph.D. in computer science. I'm now a professor at North Carolina State University, in Raleigh. My book, Computing for Ordinary Mortals, will appear this fall. www.amazon.com/author/robertstamant

A menagerie of moldy meta-posts for new OSers

Rate: 16 Flag

A meta-post on Open Salon is a post about Open Salon. I've written my share of OS meta-posts (some would say more than my share) to try to collect our observations and insights about some OS-relevant topic in an accessible form. Some of these older posts might be of interest to new OSers, hence this post.

(You'll notice something odd about the posts below, if you visit them: you can't add ratings or comments. I didn't want to clog up the feed with a lot of old stuff that I've deleted and then put back. Feel free to comment here, though.)

Ten rules for getting on the cover of Open Salon was an early foray into meta (September, 2008).  I think it's still reasonable advice, but opinions differ.  Of the OSers I  mention, about half are still active.

How rude! Etiquette on Open Salon (November, 2008) got a fair amount of feedback to questions like Is it appropriate for a poster to send an Open Salon mail message to a number of other members about your latest post? and Is it appropriate for a commenter to enter a comment, but refrain from rating the post that prompted the comment? and Is it appropriate to refrain from favoriting someone who has favorited you? We're still talking about such issues today.

An Open Salon lexicon (also November, 2008) was an attempt to get a handle on the vocabulary that was evolving on OS: What an Open Call is, what bumping means, what to call people who blog on OS, and so forth. Thou mayest find it all a bit archaic by now, given the speed at which OS has changed, but perhaps it's still informative.

Finally, there are a couple of entertainments that new OSers may find amusing, a Separated at Birth effort that matched up then-popular OSers by their avatars, and a reinterpretation of Open Salon as Open Saloon.

Jesus, hasn't anyone figured this out yet? One word: Bribery. A nice plate of potato salad usually does the trick. (You didn't hear it from me.)
I want to know how you made them unrateable.
Still being a relative n00b I found this all very helpful. Thanks!
Hi, john. Bribery would be good, if I could only figure out the currency the editors use...

Mrs. Michaels, this is what happens if you create a new post but never hit the "Publish" button. You can still grab the Web address of the post and create a link to it; it just doesn't appear in the feed or have the usual commenting or rating capabilities turned on.
Hi, Kasey. Aah, gratification. Thanks.
good to see these back up :)
Why aren't hardly any of these people mentioned in the first how-to post writing anymore?? Such a cruel world is this...
Gees, if we make it too easy on newbies we'll just have more hungry mouths to feed around here.
Hi Rob St. Amant. Love seeing these old posts. Happy spring!
I miss some old posters, too, Kasey. (I was one of them for a while--not that I missed myself, but... oh, never mind. :-)

Hey, Julie, thanks. Sonia! I haven't seen you here for a while. Good to hear from you.

Cap'n, we all have our crosses to bear... or planks to walk, I guess. :-)
A cornicopia of common sense.
Thanks. I don't know how many people will read this stuff, but you never know...
I have missed you, friend. Thank you for the refresher course. This place got crazy for awhile and it's nice to see you back.
Hey, Rob, thanks for reposting these. Good primers for anyone new (and not-so-new) to OS. I've said it elsewhere, but let me put it down here as well: I'm glad you're back.
Hi, Patricia and Lee. Thanks for the re-welcoming.
Good work, Rob. You should give the online class for this place...

Would you be interested in collaborating with me on a "Where Are They Now" post to gather up the lost OSers from the Golden Age? I personally know many on the side, but my circle is my circle (T-Bucket, Matt, etc) and doesn't include the more popular names.
Hi, Bob! I'll help out if I can.
Oh guys! the OS Where Are They Now? webisode is sooo cool, you HAVE to do it.

Rob! so glad you reposted your stuff. Popular demand as you know, required you to rescue our Links! I actually had just finally decided to remove "Rob's ... [links]" from my home page and *poof* you returned with all your goodies, so thank your for that.

I enjoyed the 'look alike' avatars post where you posted other peoples avatars. I haven't been able to figure out how to 'steal' a photo for reprint (I should say 'borrow') with the MAC I'm now using. I wanted to copy some avatars into one of my recent posts, but just couldn't 'lift' them! Hey-I would've returned 'em, really!

So great to have you back and there's a potential post in 'de-flouncing', you have a unique perspective and many of us would be interested in knowing how it's going here this time around.
Hey Rob - You know I still have your handy html tips and tricks on my desktop as a text file. I use it to copy and paste linked comments, etc.

That is why sometimes I link to "Rob's post on sainted virgins of the Eastern Orthodox faith" by mistake.
Hi, Gabby! Thanks for the kind words. I'm happy to be back here. On "stealing" photos, this was a matter of right-clicking (control-clicking, on a Mac) on a picture, copying the link to it (its Web address), and pasting that within an image tag in the post interface. (I think it would be easier in FireFox, but it's probably not for the faint-hearted in any case. :-)

Thanks, Stacey. (I still think of you as the Paxton Pundit, by the way.)
Nice reading here, Rob! Thanks (for reposting)!!
It's nice to have a visit from such a cheerful person as you, Julie.
thanks! this is relevant.
Thanks, MsCherae, I'm glad you liked it.
Prof. St Amant, you should write a book and teach a course on OS. Your advice is always on target. Except for the OS cover post or maybe I'm the only exception to which I take exception.

Rated because I can.
