The Sex of Politics

Rate: 2 Flag

Governor Mark Sanford has announced he intends to try to keep his job as South Carolina's governor. This, after admitting to secret flights to meet his 'soul mate' down in Buenos Aires behind his state (and his wife's) back.

But it might not all be Sanford's fault. He might just have the cheating gene. About 40% of males possess this genetic allele that predisposes wanderlust in the male genitalia.

Sex and politics has never been an easy mix.

Rumors abound that the vaulted Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a grand ol' time with his Press Secretary (Eleanor is also rumored to have enjoyed the company of women in the White House, if you know what I mean). James Buchanan, after losing his wife, seems to have also lost his interest in women and took up a home with another man who was referred to as "his wife." Then there's Clinton.

But here's the trick. I'm not condoning extra-marital affairs, or romps in the backroom with your housemate, and there is the argument that a person who can't control their marriage shouldn't control a nation, but a speculative look at our Presidents indicates that many 'successful' ones liked to get around. Thomas Jefferson, anyone? John F Kennedy? FDR?

The old adage, it's not the crime, it's the lie to cover up the crime that'll get you rings true. That's what got Clinton impeached by the House. That's what got everyone interested in Sanford in the first place. But are we being fair? Sanford's a perfect case study in being too honest. The guy won't shut up. He's brutally, painfully, agonizingly honest. So do we want honesty from our leaders? Or would we prefer a JFK approach, to turn a blind eye and just appreciate that he helped put a man on the moon?

Hmmm ... good question. Maybe an alternate title would be "There's a Party in my Pants and it's Democratic."
Interesting post, Rob. I'm of the opinion that a man who cheats on his wife, will cheat on his country. Yes, I know, J.F.K. put a man on the moon, which left behind a fair amount of litter. (I view the moon like a national forest, if you haul it in, haul it out. If you can't do that, leave it alone.) He also started Vietnam. As for FDR, don't get me started, same with Clinton. As for Sanford, he's just as bad as the others. Even if the man was a miracle maker, bridge builder and somehow solved the world's problems, he's an undiciplined dick who can't keep his in his pants. Cool of you to bring up the topic, however. Rated!
Thanks RedLeg. I'm not endorsing any of these guys, don't get me wrong. I think a lot of these guys get married for political points, to appear like the public would want them, not for love or a relationship (but I can't say for sure).

I DO think Sanford is a whack-o, but I also think it's one of the most interesting looks you can have at an honest politician. Everyone speculated JFK was having an affair, everyone 'knew' he was having an affair and just didn't seem to address it (I don't really know). But Sanford, damn, he's an experiment in political honesty, at least these days. His impeachment has my vote on pure stupidity, though.

So is Obama to an extent. My favorite Obama moment came at a press conference when he was asked whether he would use ambassadorial appointments as political favors. Obama said 'yes', and suddenly that reporter didn't have a story.
I'm guess I get most upset why politicians use tax money to pay for their fun.
I don't see how that makes Obama stupid. Everyone knows ambassadorships are handed out as political favors. He acknowledged the fact. The ambassador is a political figurehead and most of the real work is done by career diplomats.
@ GeeBee. I totally agree! I didn't intend to demean Obama's move. I thought it was a pretty brilliant one! Two case studies in honesty: Sanford and Obama: Sanford went with full disclosure after the fact, and Obama went with it as a policy before there was anything to cover up.
