In Connecticut and perhaps elsewhere when a summons is served and stuffed under the door or between the storm door and the entry door it is called “an abode service”. This is done of no one answers the door or just done without even ringing the bell in the first place. You would be surprised about how many lawsuits are filed withthe defendants not even knowing that they have been sued. You may be scratching your head and asking how the hell this stuff happens?
Well to make a long story real short, there are a lot of really bad nasty people out there who are looking for the quickest and easiest ways to take lots of money out of your pocket. One of the the very favorite debt collector tricks is to purposely serve people at an address they know to be incorrect, i.e. they know the person being sued has not lived there for some time. You also have process servers who swear or affirm that they have served legal papers when in fact they have not.
Unfortunately many times the ruse works and default judgments are awarded simply because the defendants in the cases never had a clue that they were being sued and only find out later when the judgment shows up on their credit reports or on someone’s background check. Not nice.
