OS: Could We Vote on the Editor's Position?

Rate: 33 Flag
Hunter Thompson shoots a typewriter. I know how he feels.
I suggest nominating and voting for a new editor at Open Salon. From amongst our peers.
Yes? No?
You know I love you. xox
(personally, I would nominate and vote for Cartouche. And if she can't, due to her present circumstances, Lonnie Lazar. And I'm hearing now about Will Someone Feed the Cat as a candidate, (she's out) and Julie Tarp. Now, we have Art James put in....brilliant dude.. And Freaky...well...we had an affair...so I could write a tell all...but really she has kept us around the fire...and now I'm hearing about Sirenita Lake and Kind of Blue...and what about an editorial collective? Lonnie as the leader of Owl, Julie, Art, Sirenita, Kind of Blue...Kent Pitman, and Rob St. Amant and if Cartouche wants to consult...now I think I'm hearing Trig is in. Sheepdog is in! Zuma is in!)

I'll nominate Will Someone Feed The Cat.
What skeletnwmn said!
I nominate the Borg Collective. They're smart, funny and if all else fails they'll assimilate everyone and we won't care either way.
gah...I don't want another popularity contest here. There are too many choices and this could get very ugly. Worse than the picture above.

But I'll go with Andy on the Borg. They have some bitching headgear.

I also suggested that Kerry consider guest editors and choosing from there. That's how Regis found a replacement host. (not that I watch that drivel)
Are you really suggesting Democracy in action?

How cool. :-D

I wonder if Patricia would even agree, given her current situation. I can think of several people here who would be good.

There would be tough choices in the nominations. Who would manage the nominations, and insure no one was using subterfuge generate many nominations for one individual?

It gets dicey, this Democracy thing.......
What seditious rot is this?

A commoner midst the Peerage !

Methinks Sirrah, or Madam, that you've been tippling the Laudanum to be so froward as to Tickle yon Lauerman.
Well, Bill...I think we should take it dicey then! I trust that Kerry would run it honestly...xox
Hmmmmm.

This might just explain Dr. Amy's foray into humor today.
and if Patricia or anyone else didn't want to be nominated, then they could say so, and take themselves off the ballot. xox
I think it's better to avoid the possibility of social networking our way into prominence here. I'd rather believe in the old-fashioned idea that the editors know what they want the face of OS to look like. It's already a fact that the cool kids meet up on Facebook all the time and then grace us with their presence here when they're good and ready. Then they gang rate and mass e-mail. Screw that. What's so wrong with 10 loyal readers without any boosterism?
Stacey, I don't believe that would happen...I really don't. I think there are people here who would be amazing in this job...and I say, let's vote. xox
Well, we have to pay attention to what the editor needs to know to help run the business of OS - the position is not just about recognizing the greatness of our collective writing, after all. ;-)

A good writer, experience in journalism, a strong working knowledge of new media...... this editor will doubtless be working the the search engine marketing team of salon, and SEM is a deep and complicated well of knowledge unto itself. Lonnie, therefore, is a very good bet.
OMG...I think I kinda am one of the cool kids on Facebook...if I could really figure out how to use it! xox
Sandra said "collective" she's for the Borg too. Knew it.
No. It should be a business decision on the part of Kerry and Joan and anyone else that handles hiring over at Salon. I don't know the background of any of the people here, but if they have it, I say go for it. And if not, someone else will move into the role and we'll be fine.
Sandra...I think some of us have an idea of who the person might be...i doubt there would be many nominees. I adore Lonnie AND he's a lawyer! With the terms of agreement and all...excellent choice.
I agree with JK on this one - and not merely because I have applied for the position. This is paid employment and we, as members, aren't the ones who would pay the salary. While I think I'm relatively well-liked here, that can't be a basis for a job that would be much more involved than choosing something we like. We do have a voice, whether we realize it or not. When we rate posts and read them, the editors take note. More times than not, if the post has merit, it will become an EP.

I imagine that some of the candidates who apply, myself included, actually need a job and I take that seriously. (Not that you aren't.) This is a position within a major corporation that can have ramifications if not done properly. I don't feel as though a popularity contest should be the foundation for someone gaining employment.
Tony...sounds like a whole lot of command and control to me....this is a collective....Andy said it! xox
The Second Amendment is all well and good, but shotguns for opinionated bloggers? Just too dangerous. I say we send Kerry a kevlar vest with hearts on it.
Julie....I don't believe anyone who has been a regular poster here would be vote because 'they like someone.' Not for a minute. xox
Wow, this is a great idea, Robin!

Pawed.
I second Will Someone Feed the Cat. She's practically a guest editor already with her weekend wrap-ups. Plus she has experience freelancing for the Toronto Star.
Hey Lady...glad you dig it! xox
Travis, this is what I'm talking about! xox Excellent choice with her...xox
I don't think Salon is taking nominations. They're taking applications.
Wow - interesting idea - even if it doesn't happen, it's an interesting idea. I wonder if they could let us vote on candidates, but keep the names out of it - possibly even give each of the front runners a day to answer questions asked by OS before the voting . . . it might reduce worris over the "cool" factor.
Jeanette, I suggest changing that...xox
WSFTC is a solid choice. Cartouche only wishes to go off into the wilderness and commune with her muse or hang out in her hottub or perhaps both.

but if each of these capable wommin have their hands full, I will make the sacrifice and humbly accept this position, merrily driving OS into the internet tubing rocks, in technicolor, with great panache and many many exclamation marks!! also dots of continuity...........
You know a mock campaign of individuals and an election with reasons for each candidate isn't a bad idea. It would probably get the people who are in charge, (is anyone in charge) attention more than posts like mine where I just make fun of them.

Anarchy! Anarchy I tell you!
rated
Owler...I don't think any of the long time bloggers here would vote because they like someone...I like LOTS of people here...but I trust people would choose a good editor. xox
Now, Mical...I'm a radical, not an anarchist...xox
So, would everyone need to post their full resumes and qualifications? That would be quite a lot of personal information out there. In addition, those nominated may not want the job. For example, Will Someone Feed the Cat? (whom I think is fabulous) has said she does not. But, yet her name continues to come up.
On a more serious note ... do you think it's possible for someone writing here to be an editor, because, while I love everyone here, with few notable exceptions (okay two) I'm not sure personal feelings about the place might creep not appropriately in ... on the other hand, well, maybe someone who knew the place ... oh hell. Never mind me.

Freaky? I mean, there'd be cake!
Julie...I think people should campaign...based on qualifications...if you have a resume on line, everyone has your stuff anyway...sorry fact, but true. xox
odette...I don't think it's possible for everyone to be an editor...hell, I don't want to do it! But, I think we have peers here who can do it...xox
Can someone give me a rationale as to why Salon, a private company, should let someone other than their hiring committee (or however they work it) decide who they hire and pay?
Because they're smart, Jeanette...xox
Oh, no doubt there are qualified individuals among us. Absolutely. :) I mean, there are quite a few editors working elsewhere who post here for one ... wait! Does this mean Freaky is not in the running?!? ;)
I believe Tink and the Ed I. Tor are already friends, so it was be an easy transition!
Why not do it like they do in politics?

Just send money.
motor...you want to send money....i'll get you an address...xox
I see that Gordon Osmond has nominated . . .

(pause for dramatic effect)

. . .himself.

Go figure.
As an OS bottom-feeder and free bird, do what yo want, but I think it would be best if they hired the person.
Robin, I was thinking virtual money, not real money.

Oh, wait. I should have thought that through a bit more.
i say this is an historic opportunity...xox
trudgeh...let go and let god...xox
I agree about the long-term bloggers . . . my idea is more to assuage the fears of those who feel less trusting of "known" OSer's sort of running for office, so to speak. But typically, if one is looking for a conspiracy, one can find a conspiracy, whether or not a conspiracy exists.

For myself, I'm good with either way the process goes - but I like the idea of OSer's choosing the editor.

(And may I just say, Robin, that it's good to have you back. You've been missed.)
The voices in my hive mind compel me to vote for the Borg. I want those super sense implants.
Owler...this is our chance at democracy! I say, let's two dikes hit it! Do you want to run? xox
Gads. xxoo. No way Robin Sneed.
If that's the damn case:`
I move in with cute You!
Ya will bang me with pots!
It's Ya all that inspires here!
I'll arm myself with pastries!
Oh, Robin Sneed. Adorable!
I'll shave my head. eat garlic!
Ya make the Tree Bed for me!
Ya will be sorry I moved in too!
This is breaking news? O, sighs!
I nominate the good ole Loopy!
Dear Arthur
only this
do not miss
this moment
else
we have indeed
been fooling around
fooling around with Arthur?
!!
No.
I would never fool around with genius
Definitely a watershed moment.

I'm thinking up slogans as I type.

"An OS editor we can believe in."

"Country fOiSt"

"The audOSity of hope."

"I'm Feelin' all Mavericky"

"An EP in every pot"

"Tippecanoe and Will Someone Feed The Cat, Too."

OK, that last one was only a joke.
motor...cynicism hasn't passed for intelligence in a long time. xox
I said it on Kerry's and I'll say it here: I'm out.
The only box I am willing to stand near is full of litter.

Wait. That didn't sound right;)
Geez, Robin. THAT was heavy.

I had no idea you were serious.
motor...I am dead serious...xox
After reading the job duties and job requirements, I have to admit, I wouldn't wish that on any of my "favorites" around here.

But WSFTC -- this doesn't mean you can slack off the weekly wrap-ups.

Let's just hope Arthur doesn't apply for the job.
I wasn't striving for cynicism, and I NEVER strive for intelligence.

What I was aiming for was humor.

You know like when I said ". . .send money." and you said ". . .i'll get you an address. . ."

Oh, Hell. They're no good if ya gotta 'splain 'em.
Sirenita Lake and Kind of Blue!
I LOVE doing my Friday thingamabobs.

As time permits (rumour has it I have to write for my kibble), I will do them. I've had offers of help and links sent, which is appreciated.

It's fun to watch this play out. But it's a job - a huge one. I think anyone serious, and who has the chops for it, should apply.

Robin, I think you've taken the shit-disturber crown from me with this post;)
WSFTC...i'll take that crown...that's quite a compliment coming from you...xox
you got that right, motor....
I would easily nominate you . . . I . . . don't know about me.

And I will certainly participate in the democratic process - as well as keeping this idea in the feed (one of my favorite pass-times with posts I like).
Is the "editor position" like doggy style?
owler...I don't want it....um...did you and i have a discussion about running a publishing house? xox
also...jez about...xox
Robin, if you are, as you say, ". . .dead serious. . " I am so there with you.

I mean, the mere glimmer of a hope that a campaign of this sort could actually take off gives me shivers up and down my spine.

Should I begin looking for lawyers to kill?
motor...kill all the lawyers...except for Lonnie Lazar...xox
I'm gonna run with that hungry cat woman (she's just declining to build up the drama of it all).
Freaky, my darling...forget the rest...I vote with you always...xox
Somebody got into the cowboy Manischewitz. xoxo

Don't vote for me. I have a slow connection.
Don't let that stop you, Stacey...xox
they should get an editorial collective. too much work for one person.
Great idea, Chuck! xox
Chuck, cool it with the "c" word, woulja?

Andy H. is stumping for the Borg thingamabob whatchamacallits.
need truly objective, non-human editor. nominate self (if Gordon O not chosen)

pee ess, have contacts in teh Borg also
From that picture of HST, it seems Texas is agreeing with you.
in these parts, there is no such thing as objective...we care about outcomes...xox
Ha! oxo

Happy Birthday Bubele!
i know...Andy and the c word...harummmph. Except for I love it...xox
Excuse me, Homeless?

'Thingamabob' is my word, today, I believe.

Hmph. I can already see there'd be no working with you people...
Hey, yeah . . . Happy Birthday, Robin!
thank you, Owler...I made it another year! xox
Happy birthday!!!! The collective must celebrate this wonderful event.
I don't give a crap! I vote for resurrecting the_pink_mafia! I mean they already got a cool flag and everything!

Add Don(a) Owl and make then make OS "an offer they can't refuse!" Fantastico!
thank you, Chuck...blushing...xox
Great spirit and a sense of ownership here, definitely.
Ots your B-Day Robin? :) Well, well . . .how many spankings do you want? Wet noodle or fly tassle? LOL ;P A very happy day to YOU and big hugs!
Lady...I want 47 of whatever kind of spank you want to give!xox
That's it, MissMisk!xox
Damn good thing I'm not a detective.

HBD, Teddie. It is so fine to have you back, btw.

May I say you look fabulous for a 25-year-old. ;-D
Art James would be a riot! I don't know if anyone would know what he's talking about, but we would sure have some fun! I'd pick Kent Pitman for a candidate. He's brilliant and knows computer stuff inside and out. Rob St. Amant would be a good addition to the running, too.
Michael...while Kent and Rob are both brilliant...not sure about this setting...xox
Bill...i kiss your hand in gratitude for that! xox
Great idea!! I like your choices...
So great to see your smart and feisty self again!
Mary...you're the best...xox
OH HO!! It's your birthday Robin!! CAKE CAKE! We must have cake!!!

_|_|_|_|_|
{~*~*~*~*~}
{~*~*~*~*~}
-------------------
I wonder if the cake will bring Freaky back . . . she's got a 6th sense for cake . . .
nofrills...that's the prettiest cake I have ever had...I mean that...do you think Freaky might come by? xox
Can someone resurrect Critical Mess?!?!
if we bake it she will come.
Interesting idea but hard on the egos here at OS...
Egos? On Open Salon?

Surely you jest;)
I love the idea Robin, but knowing the job and needing a job are separate issues better suited for Kerry and his experience... Your presence here would be appreciated as well... Trial editors would be interesting, but loads of work... Many here, need to apply, that I know... Popularity in the blog universe, rivals the space time continuum... Informed society is capable of democracy, but... RRR for ideology...
Cindy...it will be okay...xox
Patrick...I believe that there are writers here who know the culture...I mean, it's nothing that can't be undone....xox
I feel like I'm hearing a lot of conservative voices...is democracy an impossibility then? xox
Good idea, especially since there are so many people around here who seem to devote their lives to OS without the pay.
47? You don't look older then 30, seriously! :)
Freaky, Freaky, Freaky! My own dear darling.........oxxoxoxoxxxx
I'm sorry, I already voted for WSFC and Freaky as Co-Eds. Can I vote again, like in real life?

Amazing cake, NFDM. And I thought only Cindy Ross could do type art. You humble me.
Barking Lot, do you really think Freaky and I aren't monitoring this voting site?
Lady, I'll kiss your hand too...xox
I vote for Me!!! Oh wait, I'd make a lousy editor because the only path to the cover would be through paypal.
good shot, Nervosa...xox
Love Hunter S. But am not sure he is necessarily "editor" material. Indeed, I imagine many editors would have been happy to take the bullet to be put out of the misery of having to rein him in. God love him, though. Good to see you around.
I have to second what Julie and Sandra posted. I don't think people should be chosen by what amounts to a popularity contest. I've been in various forms of journalism all my life but that doesn't necessarily mean my experience will win out with the eds. I also think it's naive to think that people won't vote for their favourite writer/person, who may not represent what the eds are seeking. This is a serious, paid position and involves a bit more than just being able to write and edit.

As well, whoever gets the position will find themselves straddling the line, and fielding the complaints, that Thomas did. It is impossible to please everyone and if you know who voted for you, well...the problem is compounded.
gwool...you know i love you..xox

emma...i gotta bigger faith than that...i believe in human beings...xox
okay, so what I'm sorta hearing is that in a democratic election people vote for what's popular...not for the best person for the job...xox
I have opinions and obviously I have one about this. It should not be anyone currently contributing on OS.

OS needs a fresh perspective. A tireless new eye. Someone with a vision who knows the pulse of the medium, but can build readership. Someone who can discern from the stories or what to feature based on quality and content.

Covers and editor picks need to be updated all the time without the long down times that we have on weekends and other times. I know from myself I do not go to stale web pages, the medium is not print. It needs to be refreshed all the time.
Well said, Stella....as always...but I still think we should get a vote...xox
I also thought of what you are saying, Stellaa. It would guarantee objectivity, at least in the beginning, and a fresh eye. But it was awfully nice of Kerry to think of us.

Robin, I think you nailed it. People vote for whom they like, who may or may not be the best candidate. It's just human nature.
Happy Birthday. I posted my CV. I'm qualified. NOT
Thank you, Sheepdog...rock on with your bad self!!! xoxxxxxx
I agree with Stella on the need---BUT what if the person who could do that is already here?
Chicago...you're a man after my own heart...xoxxxxxx
I say we go with the cutest... ::ahem::
Freaky...that's you! Come here my pink haired beauty...i want to rough up your hair...!xox
Put all the posts in a tumbler. Play BINGO.
Scupper...not a bad bet...xox
i can't stand this kind of popularity contest but i'll vote if it turns out to be a voting thang. i love several of these people and could not make that choice. love love love but not so much with the gratitude
If nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve. Happy birthday!
I still nominate the dude that lives behind my toilet!!

;)
(I nominate Mr. E)

Huh? Who said that???
Happy Birthday Robin, sorry I missed it by some hours but sincerely wish you a wonderfilled, sunshiny year ahead.
enjoyed reading the comments here...
That's kind of you to mention me, but I (and I bet numerous others there) wouldn't have time to do it justice. But I know who would: The Open Salon membership. By that I mean that every time I find myself dismayed by the cover (which is sadly quite often) I think to myself, “if only there were a way to simplify the job of the editor, perhaps by helping them find the good stuff.” Then I think, “wait, isn't that what ratings are?” Finally I conclude (and this has happened more than once), “Why don't we just put Most Rated on the cover and have the job of the Editor be reduced from an issue of taste to a more mechanical issue like finding good graphics for the things the rating system chose or else weeding out spam?” Then I think, “Oh, I bet the editors want the job to be more than that.” Then I start puzzling over why they created the ratings system and the slogan “You Make The Headlines” if they didn't want that... Then I just get sad again, like when I started thinking about it. So I stop thinking.

If we have to have a human do it, my vote is for Saturn. She's been needing official status for ages and is more than qualified.
