Aristocrats, democrats and barbarians
Been a while since I blogged but these thoughts have been on my mind a lot recently and I needed to put them down somewhere.
My thoughts on politics have been influenced heavily by Thomas Jefferson. Most specifically this passage from his letter to Henry Lee on August 10, 1824.

I've never been very happy
With the name of our species: Homo Sapiens, Thinking Man. Supposedly this separates us from the other animals.
Yes, some of us think. Indeed they are famous for it. But to say our species thinks, well, I'm not sure that's true.
Most of us aren't really much different from the computer… Read full post »
A few thoughts on the nature of words
Words are interesting things. In the words of Humpty Dumpty, "When I use a word it means just what I want it to mean, no more and no less."
My first thought was triggered by a blog post here on Open Salon a few days ago. Most especially this line caught my eye.

Why I call myself a heretic
I just read a most interesting article in New Yorker.
This is something I've long known. My first exposure to the ideas in the article was with Sun Tzu. As he noted in The Art of War:
"Therefore those who win every battle are not really skillful – those who render ot… Read full post »
Why?
I've been thinking about that man who murdered the doctor in Kansas on Sunday. I always wonder about the motive of such things.
And I've reached a conclusion. The man did it for the simple reason of ego. It shows in all of the actions he's taken that are public knowledge.

A little mantra…
I repeat to myself when I read the news. Especially after that doctor's murder yesterday.
"To be angered by evil is to partake of it, stupid."
It usually works. Read full post »
An old favorite
Can't think of anything to blog about, so I'll play some music. Hard, fast and dirty.
Shameless Promoting
Since I can't think of anything else to do I'll promote my latest book.
Breaking The Covenants is now available from Aspen Mountain Press.
Here's what it's about.
The German vampire Gunther von Wittersheim has a problem: he’s fallen in love with a mortal woman, the Englis… Read full post »
A little perspective
Cartouche's post about all of us being flukes of nature bought this video to mind.
A favorite story
This is an old favorite story of mine. I has a lot to do with the way I think.

Several centuries ago there was an old samurai who had decided to retire and become a priest. But before he could he had to decide which of his three sons received… Read full post »
It's all just tools
I started to come to this realization many years ago when I read Eric Maria Remarque's All Quiet On The Western Front. In that book I remember that the German soldiers favorite weapon for hand-to-hand combat was their entrenching tools. Basically, a common shovel. The shovel could brain a man even… Read full post »

Silliness
I was following a political thread on a forum I inhabit. Several neo-Marxists chipped into it. You'd know them as neo-conservatives. But, to me, their rhetoric, economic determinism, their belief in the dialectic and their expectation of a class war marks them as close to Marxists.
At any… Read full post »
