Fall in Minnesota

Rate: 32 Flag

imgres-3

In soft breezes

Aspen leaves

Beg to fly away

Tiny angels tied by stems

To the earth

Milkweed pods

Express

Their sticky white

Mother’s milk

So that

Tiny red damselflies

Are strong enough

To unite and fertilize

Their eggs

Hummingbirds become

Delightfully plump

Twice their size

Taking to the sky

And finding a spot of warmth

Ducks and Geese

Make perfect V’s

Trying to stay

Out of the

Hunter’s sites

To find a place

Where lakes

Do not freeze

 Wooly bear

 Caterpillars

Thicken up their coats

To spend the winter

Inside a rock

Or open up a spot

Inside the bark

Of a lonely tree

North Country folks stay to

Freeze

Whichever body part

Not kept well covered

Or

 Head to hot places

To become

Snow Birds

Awesome, RP (and just love the pic)! Such respect and exquisite appreciation for the raw beauty and reality of Nature I want to say captured in your words but that is against the spirit of your poetry. Portrayed by your words. Thank you. [r] :) libby
What a beautiful whisper to herald in the Season. You make the thought of hot soup and good company enticing, while the world slowly quiets. Perfect depiction. Rated for your vision.
As a Minnesotan, I salute and applaud this piece with as much enthusiasm as I can muster.

I do feel like a snow bird at times.

Thank you.
Beautiful images. I can't believe fall is coming. Spinning too fast here.
This is so great!~ It makes me want to put on an old wool sweater!
We noticed flocks of geese in our area recently. It is time once again.
I like how this season unfolded in your words...the end made me smile!
This is so visual and perfectly depicting fall in all it's splendor. Thank you
this is sweet indeed. lovely. thank you poetess. :)
ps. LOVE the mental image of fat little hummingbirds.
Ohh, my darling mother-in-law, Jean, arrived yesterday afternoon from Minneapolis, where she said it is now freezing! Yikes! I was just there a little more than a month ago and it was so hot and humid I could hardly breathe!

The Bay is slightly cooler but weather still in 70's and will soon again be back up in 80-90 range for a nice Indian summer!

I love your beautiful poem with poetic nuances for the changing season and it's subtle affect on mother nature and her young.
"Tiny angels tied by stems"
I'll be surrounded by trees this weekend and I'll be looking at the leaves and smile as I remember that line.
Mmmm, how perfect for today and this transitional time. Sigh.
Indulge me in my investigation of this intriguing V-formation:

from Wikipedia:

"The V formation greatly boosts the efficiency and range
of flying birds, particularly over long migratory routes.
All the birds except the first
fly in the upwash from the wingtip vortices of the bird ahead.
The upwash assists each bird
in supporting its own weight in flight.

In a V formation of 25 members, each bird
can achieve a reduction of induced drag by up to 65%
and as a result increase their range by 71%..

Also!: The birds flying at the tips and at the front
are rotated in a timely cyclical fashion to spread flight fatigue equally among the flock members.
The formation also makes communication easier
and allows the birds to maintain visual contact with each other."

Thanks for providing us all with your vortices, angel:

"Wingtip vortices are tubes of circulating air that are left behind a wing as it generates lift "
Ahhh, yes. You've captured it crisply, perfectly. The wisps of leafy bonfires are circling my nostrils. Roars of football fans in the distance. Fall is my favorite. For now, anyway.
I am a migrating bird.. every day I fly off somewhere else.
Love the words
HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Plus, if you read it out loud, it's like the rhythm of one of those falling leaves--a swoop, a twirl, a brief hanging moment, and on to the next cycle. Yay.
Oh I loved this one so much!!
You capture the mood. A mix of colors right now, until late fall steals them away. Flex your shoveling muscles.
This captures fall so well, RP. Love the way "hummingbirds become delightfully plump," sounds.
Romantic Poetess,

This is so, so beautiful.
Geese, our dear directional friends. When the cold wind blows they fly south, to have babies and get a tan. Their fluid formations

Lovely, RP ... very lovely!

I learnt something new too! I haven't heard of damselflies before .... I've just lumped them all under the name of dragonflies. : )
So nice! I remember fall in Minnesota. You've captured it well.
R for the return of the season :-)
I finally put on some long pants and shoes yesterday. Usually, it's cargo shorts, flip flops and an old T-shirt! Beautiful poem and a chill is in the air~~
oh i really like this one! r.
Transition time. I liked the plumping hummingbirds--cute typographical touch, but I especially liked your precise images, and was truly captivated by those in the first stanza.

May we all find lakes that do not freeze.

I loved the flow and images, but these last lines I could picture! Not sure if Germans are Snow Birds, too. Because winter is worshiped here.

Great to read some of your work. Been reading your comments at different blogs.
A river of birds in motion, a nation of people with wings...somehow...

Your poem makes it even better, RP ~
Thank you for these images today.
Oh this really paints a wonderful picture of the fall. I guess I am a snow bird too even though I love the clean beauty of winter.
I Vove this ! It is so musical and picturesque. Beautiful image, beautiful words!
