I watch as a tiny egg is planted on a cattail reed
Waiting for the nymphs
Picking cattails while I wait
I am curious to see the birth of
Nymphs
I am told they have
Translucent bodies
Stealthy and swift they search first for food
Killing tadpoles for lunch
As child of the Pond Country
On spring afternoons
My brother and I caught tadpoles
In a Mason jar
Nymphs become Nymphomaniacs
Salamanders in the window well
Creatures slithering in the pond
Past life connections to Sea Monsters
Dragonflies have 30,000 lenses in their eyes
Seeing what the shadow knows
I often lurk in shadows
Wishing I had lenses like these
Lenses working like fingertips
Bringing in the light
Creating dark
Shedding skin for the last time
Bleeding fire
While I admire my iridescent skin
As freckles turn to liver spots
Fusing them with bits
Of Dichroic glass
The mating dance begins for the first time
Begins for the last time
Hovering, I watch the dance
Sitting just above my bobber
Threading needles with seeds
Seeds for new eggs
Mating before my eyes
Virgins for the first time
In the backseat of the car
Ends for the last time
On the day we pass to the other side
Dragonfly and Me
Bonded at the shoulder
I have learned to fly

And thanks for the kind and generous comments on my freshman at university piece. Dick was a great friend and when writing the piece I realized how much I've missed him over the years.
Well done, RP.

A little Wikipedia research on dragonflies tells me
that Europeans mostly thought they were evil
in the old days,
and Japan reveres them,
and now alot of money is made from dragonfly designs.
lucky, lucky dragonflies...
Wonderful and rated with hugs
Unfortunately, I no longer do mating dance in the back seat....
(I remember my '57 Pontiac!)
:-) / R Nice read. Really.

Sheesh, mine doesn't even come close to that.
Awesome bit of work there. With 30,000 lenses that's 30 times a 1,000 points of light.
Loved this, RP.

There are so many stunningly beautiful lines here. I'm reading again and again.
