Former child star Mackenzie Phillips tells Oprah and audience that an incestuous relationship with her musician father, John Phillips (The Mamas and The Papas), began on the night before her wedding and that the incest and drug abuse with
her father went on for ten years:

John Phillips (1935-2001), co-founder, songwriter and musical architect of the Mamas and the Papas.
"Phillips was best known as the Mamas and the Papas' chief songwriter and vocal arranger, having arranged and written or co-written several Top Ten hits during the group's short lifetime, including "California Dreamin'," "Monday, Monday," "I Saw Her Again Last Night," "Creeque Alley" and "12:30 (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)."- Rolling Stone
Mackenzie Phillips, now 49, details the relationship and other memories of her difficult life in her new book, "High on Arrival."

@Scanner, I just put it out there in my post...but I agree that pointing fingers and making accusations about someone dead for 8 years is a bit much and Oprah is a bit over-the-top allowing unsubstantiated claims about a deceased man to be made on her show...Maybe she is biased because she claims to have been a victim of incest herself...
@myriad, Freud's recant was not voluntary...If memeory serves...
This whole business about a 10-year affair beginning on the evening prior to her wedding sounds a bit suspect. The only discernable truth here is that MP is pimping out her dead daddy. It’s strictly cash for trash.
She claims the incest went on for ten years. But she was a grown, engaged, and about-to-be-married, woman when it began, according to her....
She claims she ended the relationship with her father when she became pregnant and couldn't determine who the father was....So now she is admitting to adultery due to an icestuous relationship with her father....
Thanks for the comment......
The sexual abuse took place when she was 19 and she let it go on.
And now (30 year late on the cusp of the release of her memoir) is when she decides to tell the world? Come on!
I just hope this helps people identify and come out about such things.
I am wondering this, though: why jump to the defense of John Phillips? Are we confusing the fact that he made great music with his character? Is it not possible (as we've seen many times) that public and private personae are radically different?
I'm not trying to start an argument. I'm just curious. Why is she seen as a horrible person for revealing what (may) have happened to her?
@Trudge, Has she helped or hurt the cause of those who have in fact been victimized in this way? I think she has left a great deal of room to doubt her story. Perhaps too much room.....
Getting the story out in the open is part of the healing process. And we're not even talking about boys here, who are even more at risk for speaking out. That's a whole 'nother ball of wax.
What sort of proof do you think would be conclusive for you? Videotape? Private medical reports? Police reports? There isn't proof in most cases, but I doubt very few of these stories.
Myriad, I agree: Freud called it correctly the first time. For all the nutty stuff he wrote, he has made invaluable contributions to our understanding of human behavior and thought processes.
@LB, "Proof" isn't the operative term here. Although, if the accused were on trial, proof would indeed be required...What is being discussed in essence is the lack of corroboration and the context or framework in which the accusation is made...The subject is a difficult one to navigate under the best of circumstances and conditions...It is in tha regard I don't think that a publisher's office or Oprah's couch is either the best or the first place to begin the process of healing...An objective look at the facts of this matter does raise some serious and legitimate doubts...And, while I wouldn't summarily dismiss the story I would employ a healthy dose of skepticism... and take the whole thing from this particular individual with a grain of salt....
Selling books, and sell outs, smells like another bailout... Who knows, too sad to swallow without a good chew for me Ron...
@SM, Precisely, my line of reasoning......
Sorry. :(
Her allegations may or may not be true, sounds pretty far fetched to me, the story made me throw up in my mouth though, especially when she told about having an abortion because she didn't know if the baby's father was her Dad or her husband. Yuck. Skank.
@EP, So true....And with a MARRIED daughter?
@DF, I'm sure "O" made a referral to Dr. Phil......
And, if John Phillips were here to deny the accusations? Oooooh, now THAT would make me puke. NOT rated.
