Speaker Nancy

In the aftermath of last night's election, we can expect Nancy Pelosi to be handed the blame for losing the House.  She was the face of the Congressional Democrats and a favorite target of the hate ads.

But the reality is that Speaker Pelosi was the only national Democratic leader who delivered what the voters in the last two election cycles had demanded, an effective alternative to the failed Republican policies that brought the nation to its knees.  We will never be able to measure the difference that the larger and more powerful economic stimulus, the stronger health plan with a public option, the targeted tax cuts for small businesses, or the hundreds of other bills she marshalled through the House against the total opposition of Republicans and the resistance of the Blue Dogs, only to see them killed or maimed beyond recognition by the dysfunctional Senate, would have made in the lives of suffering Americans, or whether they would have been enough to moderate the inevitable midterm backlash.

But if Barack Obama and Harry Reid had the courage, commitment and leadership skills of Speaker Pelosi, both the country and the Democratic party would be better off than they are now or are likely to be for at least the next two years.  They survive, and she'll be expected to take the fall for their failure, not hers.

History will show the first female Speaker of the House was also the most effective legislative leader of her generation, and one of the greatest in the history of the country.

Speaker Nancy, you deserved better.

I know the gloaters and haters will jump on this comment thread like blue dogs on a marrow bone, but it needs to be said
I think it's ironic that Democrats are so relieved we still control the Senate, since it's the Senate that compromised away all of Pelosi-driven reform the House passed, even with the larger majority. She deserved better, but nothing can take away her accomplishments. She was tough enough to stand against the ridiculous campaign against her. I think she did damn well.
The better she deserved, the worse she was gonna get it. I really hope the Democrats don't yet again learn the wrong lesson (You know what we should do? BE MORE LIKE REPUBLICANS!) from this defeat.
Excellent and concise, as is expected.

Thanks, Roy.
She is a lucky woman to have your praise.
She sure did. And so did we. I don't blame her-- I blame Democrats who were too willing to accomodate too quickly.

Mr. President, I still support you, but are you listening? You gave away too much, too willingly. I wanted President Bad Ass.
rated.
Roy, I appreciate you noting this. She faced an onslaught of criticism from the right...which I've learned means she must have been effective.

thank-you.
No good deed goes unpunished.
No question Nancy Pelosi was far more effective at legislating the Change agenda than either Obama or Reid. To be fair, her task was in some ways easier, what with no filibuster and no secret holds to contend with.

From my perspective, her biggest problem was simply a personality that was impossible to warm up to -- she gave off the same elitist vibes that are at the heart of the venom dumped on Obama. I suppose, it could have been even worse for her, tho, if she was black.
While I am not as filled with ardor for NP, I very much appreciate the generosity and tone of your post. Well said.
America is polarized roughly evenly. Pelosi is a representative of the people. To take such an ardent one-sided approach to her agenda without listening to the will of the people, on top of her personal entitlement attitude (757 inclusive) is what makes her such a target. It may have taken courage to do what she did, but it does not make it right.
Hopefully the finger pointing will not intensify. This country needs leaders which will work together to help the economy bounce back. Too many families are suffering right now and need relief.
In truth any blame lies on circumstances. The worst economy in decades. Speaker Pelosi was, perhaps, abrasive at times. But, as stated, she stood for the principals upon which she was elected.

Lawless makes a good point. I note with interest that 50% of the Blue Dog Democrats who were up for re-election went down in flames. Being more "republican" gave them no benefit.
I'm with you on this one. Pelosi was a target mainly because she was so effective. Perhaps someday the Rayburn building in DC should be renamed the Pelosi Building.
But dont count her out. She wont disappear over the horizon. Theres a lot of good ol' fighting democrat behind those overly stretched eyes.
I lived in her district for a long time. She was a wonderful representative. Anyone who knows her history and her story knows she has been scapegoated beyond recognition, just as Hillary was. It's almost a formula now, yet it will take years for her to dig out of the abuse ignorantly heaped upon her. R.
I am proud of her and I wish she was still going to be the speaker, she set a fine example and I think we all took something important away from how she worked and conducted herself. I will always be proud to have met her, and experienced her leadership during my time on this earth. A trail blazer extraordinare. I just wish all women in politics were more like her and less like palin.
My mom always said that if you can't say anything nice about someone then it is best you don't say anything at all. (Me not saying anything)
Roy, that's incredibly decent, what you wrote. Whether another's suffering is ever cause to gloat, I'll take my chances by saying the right wing has, as they call it, eaten their young. 28 of the 54 "blue dogs," according to Kos, were turned out by baggers, yet hardly replaced with something worse. A truthful retelling of these last 18 months will have to include the obvious explanation why nothing went according to line-ups and affiliations. The liberal caucus, I heard, lost only 4 out of some 70 members. A damn decent 4, but only 4.
You had me at the title!
It's very sad indeed that one of the few politicians who serves her country for altruistic reasons gets vilified by the right. To make matters worse, she does not get the support she deserves from her own party. Truly one of the unsung heroes in American politics.

I second Shiral's notion that we need President Bad Ass and don't get him.
Ya know Roy, I'm not a fan of most of Nancy Pelosi's policies but I found myself defending her today on FB. I try to be objective. I voted for a Democrat, Michael Michaud but I am not a Democrat or a Republican. I am finding myself with a severe distaste for career politicians and the bipartisan system these days and am registered, NO PARTY. I am tired of the lack of civil discourse in politics. We choose to participate in the polarizing when we start being abusive, calling people names and declaring everyone stupid and mindless who does not agree with or think like us. Nancy Pelosi like every human, deserves better and respect. Humans in all walks of life deserve to be treated with civility and respect, even if we don't agree politically or on any other score. When there is a chronic and major breakdown in civil discourse, well, we are experiencing the results now. I am sure, in the long run, that a woman like Pelosi will be able to hold her own, stand up for herself and move forward.
I want to huzzah everything that you are saying, and to add that from the very beginning of her tenure that Nancy Pelosi faced greater attacks form every corner of her party(including Progressive women) than any male speaker previous to her.
I also am saddened by the chastening effect this defeat will have on the already underwhelming Barack Obama. The losses from last night are sure to be used by the Larry Summers wing of the party to further rationalize kissing the asses of a political opposition that has just been rewarded for cynicism and intransigence.
Here here. Rated.

My hair-brained prediction for Pelosi's future: She's going to run for Feinstein's senate seat in 2012. With Brown and Boxer both taking statewide races by double digit margins, she might just win it.
wow, roy! what a nice tribute to a hard-working, under-appreciated public servant. thanks!
Roy, nobody could have said this better than you. I am sure that Ms. Pelosi will continue to deliver her outstanding leadership to her constituency and her country. The next speaker has a tough act to follow.
I totally agree. She has never gotten the credit or quite frankly the respect that she deserves and had to bear the scorn as the face of the Democratic Party. She is very tough and didn't mind doing it as a true leader. I love Nancy Pelosi and President Obama needs to publicly thank her for all of her courage and support over the last two years. Excellent post.
It seems Speaker Pelosi was the only one that understood what people elected Obama to do. Nice post.
When she took that walk through enemy territory she won my heart. What a smart, brave, honorable lady. Thanks for this post.
The main reason the Republican's hate the Democrat's is they have a black president, a black attorney general, and a woman running congress! This is a nightmare for the white establishment of 230 plus years! If Nancy Pelosi were a male she would be touted as one tough go getter! But, she is a woman.
Well said. Thanks.
I agree totally. Although I am not from her district (I live in a Congressional District near Seattle), I am very proud and fond of her. She did a wonderful job. I will miss her. She was one of my favorites.
So true, & I'm glad you excellent-ly said it! Reading this (about a tough woman who gave it a good shot) makes me feel slightly better, except I'd like a happy ending, please. And I'm bummed about the progressive Democrats that lost their elections (although not so bummed about the turncoat Blue Dogs who also lost).
I am feeling deep sadness today. The kind of sadness I felt when I was getting a divorce from the fellow who promised all kinds of good and usual things only to be a two-timing dawg. Now we have the Blue Dogs to thank for throwing principle out the window to retain their seats, only to lose them for cause as a result.

And here we all are holding the bag again, wondering if the mortgage is about to outstrip the value of our homes and if our friends who have been out of work for an interminably long time will ever find work that is worthy again. Nancy did her best to do something about those issues. I hope she runs for Feinstein's seat next.
My husband is annoyed at her that she wouldn't let articles of impeachment be read against Bush, but I realize that she did do a lot more than she had to, and more than people know.
Those who demonized her always seemed to be playing to an "uppity woman" stereotype. Full respect here and thanks for the post Roy.
I have to convict myself. I didn't realize how much Pelosi meant to me personally until I went to bed thinking that she had lost her seat, and how pleased I was the next morning when I realized the morons on CNN kept talking as though she had been unseated when all that happened was that she gave up the gavel to John B.

I think we will all have cause to wish Pelosi back in charge, and sooner rather than later.
So true, and full of rue. We'll appreciate her even more now that's she's out.
Nice tribute. Thanks for posting.
I respect nearly everyone who has the courage of their convictions, right or wrong. She had a tough row to hoe and did it well. Most men would have crumbled under the stress and sexism she endured.
It’s a fair move on your part to point out that Pelosi might end up shouldering more blame for Democrats’ failures than she truly owns. I’m not sure that is the case, but it might be. There is plenty of blame for failure to go around within the Democrat Party.

I think, however, that Pelosi bears as much blame as any other Democrats in Congress for the failures we’ve seen from our government over the past four years. Beginning with the FISA vote BEFORE the 2006 midterms, we’ve seen congressional Dems turn their backs on the core values of progressives and our concept of “rule of law”. Kowtowing to conservatives in virtually every piece of legislation that has come down during the past two years, they have failed progressive values and have appeased conservative/corporate interests at every turn.

Their abandonment of those values continues today, and their losses --- our losses --- are a byproduct of extreme political investments by the very forces to which they kowtowed. Whether people admit it or not, there is a war going on within our own country and progressives cannot win that war by strengthening and more deeply entrenching the enemy. Now, we will see a further deterioration of our nation as these conservative idiots --- Republican AND Democrat, alike --- further destroy our core values.

Are we a nation of people? I think only if corporations are people. Oh, wait, …they are. Sociopaths are in control.

And let’s not forget the high percentage of idiots that live in this country who can’t recognize that their own interests are not served by their masters.
Yeah, right! Everyone wants true the loser NOW, but what Rick said is reality:

Thirty years ago, she'd have been considered a moderate repugnicant, and I don't vote for moderate repugnicants.

She failed to uphold her oath of office which was to defend the constitution.

If repugnicant had voted positively on issues that benefitted her multi-millionaire husband, progressive would be all over it. She's a woman, she's a democrat, that doesn't excuse her hypocrisy.

Just one instance: one of many such votes
true = to rue (busted keyboard, soon to be replaced).
A woman with balls is always a feared critter eh?

Shame on me, such a sexist remark, but I'll be d*mned if I can see any other reason for the junk dumped on this woman.

Here's a blowout 2012 ticket - H Clinton and N Pelosi.

Katie bar the door and get the h*ll out of the way...

;)

Rated for unspoken truths.
I ditto everything Shiral said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you! I completely agree.
I'm not sure if it is your sub-heading or Salon's, nevertheless, this: "The California representative did more for the progressive agenda than Harry Reid or the president ..."

is, I think, why the vote went the way it did.
Is this the same Nancy Pelosi who stated: "...we have to pass the bills before you can read them."?

Good riddance as Speaker, Ms. Pelosi.
The country finally elected a true liberal in Barrack Obama, not a moderate the radical right called liberal such as Bill Clinton. A lot of things happend including in my opinion the nationalizing of G.M. and Ford. Along with health care, the stimulus and a party of nay say-ers, they became frightened in the end. I suspect the people in America are still a tad to right of the absolute middle and have trouble with true liberalism. Now, we must let Bush's tax cuts mercifully expire before the inevitable will happen if interest rates continue to be this low, deflation.
But that's what happens when you are a leader of anything in this country- you have to take the blame for other people's mistakes.
I echo what Bonnie Russell said. Now I"m waiting to see what happens to the health care reform bill now that the GOP is back in power.
Speaker Pelosi will be remembered historically as a revolutionary. She is incredibly underappreciated.

People even ridicule her physical appearance. She is 70 and looks great. She's the best-dressed person in the U. S. IMHO.
I heart you, roy. Always the gentleman with a voice of reason.
Congratulations Roy, you are 100% correct on this.
Right on Roy. She did her job in spectacular fashion and get zero credit. 420 bills sit rotting in the Senate thanks to the D-traitors over there and of course that fucking Lieberman.
The right wing attack machine singles out sacrificial lambs for their audience as a focus of reflexive hate. In their creation of an artificial universe, it makes no difference if there's a fabrication or distortion or not as long as there's a congruent narrative. Because of this, liberal appeals to reason are useless. And in the case of Nancy Pelosi, the right wing felt it had a rich target due to the sexism and misogyny of its audience.

In their relentless lust for power they transformed one of the best Speakers in decades into the most hated Speaker in decades.
