The Last Refuge of Dilettantes

Rate: 0 Flag

Our society rejoices and strives to keep up with the latest advances in technology.   We key the success of our economy with technology savvy, and count our success with our mastery of technology.  Except for one group.  Lawyers.   With the exception of patent law, attorneys can be characterized as a group of intelligent people who can't do math.

Law schools do not require mathematics as a prerequisite.  Or statistics.  Or engineering.  Or any science whatsoever.  In fact, since you can major in anything, what is the point of going to undergraduate school?  Only in Canada and the USA is law a graduate subject.  Law school curricula and teaching methods aren' t totally different than when Christopher Columbus Langdell set up the curriculum for Harvard Law School in 1893.

Law schools are notoriously easy to set up (large classes, no pesky labs) and though law libraries are noted for their comprehensiveness, most research is done on line.  In fact, there is a generation gap in the research methods of most attorneys.  And most research is done by paralegals these days, for whom the job market is a lot more favorable than it is for newly-minted lawyers.
