Why I’m Through with Trayvon Martin

Rate: 3 Flag

The verdict is not in. We do not know what transpired between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin in the Sanford, Florida shooting that captured national attention. We may never know. But I will tell you this much. I am sick and tired of defending ignorant people.

When the Martin shooting first broke, the media portrayed this as the shooting of a “boy” who had nothing but Skittles and an iced tea. That phrase alone made me think of a kid ten or eleven years old. Then came the pictures of Martin, all of them portraying a very young kid. As the story unfolded, we learned that the “boy” was 17 years old. We saw new pictures that portrayed a less innocent visage than what we had seen before. Truth be told, the more facts emerged, the less sinister Zimmerman appeared and the more “complex” Martin appeared. Our President said that if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon. Well after weeks of maintaining my objectivity on the matter, let me tell you what would happen if I had a son.

  1. First, I would not be shacking up with my girlfriend in her house. That way, when my son came to visit me he would have a role model worth a damn. I know cohabitation without marriage is the cool thing nowadays but I still say a kid is better served by seeing his divorced father either living alone or married to a new woman. Not shacking up.
  2. Second, my son would not have a Twitter handle so vile that I could not write it on my blog, or brag about it to my friends. Nor would the content of his tweets suggest he has no better than a fifth grade education.
  3. Third, if my son were visiting me, it sure as hell would not be because he was suspended from school for possession of an illegal drug.
  4. Finally, if my dearly departed son’s autopsy yielded a positive test for THC, the main intoxicating ingredient of marijuana, sonny boy would be getting a burial at sea. In other words I’d throw his sorry ass in the nearest river and save on funeral expenses.

Does this seem harsh? Well you know what? I’m tired of defending ignorant kids raised by most probably ignorant parents. Every new detail that emerged about Trayvon I tried to absorb, keeping in mind “don’t blame the victim, don’t blame the victim.” But let’s look at the issue at hand here. Zimmerman is claiming self-defense. Advocates for Trayvon say his character does not matter. Excuse me? His character is the primary determining factor in whether Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense holds any merit. Was Trayvon the type of kid to run from a fight or lean into one? The more I hear about him, the less able I am to conjecture that he would run from a fight.

Here’s the scenario that I can live with:

  1. I am divorced from Trayvon’s mother and I live alone in Sanford, Florida.
  2. Trayvon comes to visit me as part of the normal visitation agreement with my ex wife. Trayvon is a good kid. Good kids don’t possess illegal drugs.
  3. Trayvon goes out to get a snack from the nearest convenience store.
  4. About 20 minutes later, Trayvon comes running back into the house, out of breath and scared to death because some stranger approached him menacingly.
  5. Because my boy Trayvon is a nice kid, he ran like hell from this stranger. He didn’t stop to talk to him. He assumed the stranger was dangerous and he got away from him.

We know for a fact that Trayvon was not shot running away from George Zimmerman. A nice kid, an innocent kid, a kid afraid of trouble, would have run like hell. If he wound up dead it would be because Zimmerman shot him in the back. Didn’t happen that way.

You know what my tipping point was in this case? It was when I read the kid tested positive for THC. I almost dropped my outrage on his behalf when I found out about the Twitter handle he used. But I allowed myself to get suckered into that “it’s just a cultural thing” type of bull crap. But the THC was the last straw.

I’m sorry Trayvon’s parents had to suffer the loss of their son. No one should see their children die. But the fact remains that Trayvon was not a nice kid. The only way Trayvon comes up nice is if you view him through some bogus double standard that forgives ignorant behavior of young black men. As a black man, I reject that. I find it insulting in the extreme.

Verdict or no verdict, it is pretty clear to me that Trayvon was a gangsta-wannabe who encountered a cop-wannabe and got way more than he bargained for. Make no mistake. I don’t retract my objection to the Florida stand your ground law. It stinks. But I am sick and tired of ignorant people raising ignorant children and then wondering what went wrong when they get in harm’s way. To some extent, Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman were made for each other. Trayvon has paid the ultimate price for being a young fool. What price Zimmerman pays remains to be seen.

Regardless of the outcome here on out, I’m done.

Respectfully,
Rutherford

Rutherford,

Thanks for sticking your head out of the OS fog for a second to reach a conclusion regarding the Martin/Zimmerman case that is not founded on race. Before you dive back into what passes for Liberal thinking on OS, allow me to suggest a topic on which to ponder before this moment of clarity disappears.

In the midst of the most fevered portion of the Martin/Zimmerman debate, 41 people were shot next door to you, in Chicago, over a weekend (March 16 – 19). Most of these victims were black. Ten died, almost all of them black.

In these attacks, a six-year old black girl was killed. A mother and her one-year old child were wounded, both black. Some of this violence can be tied to Latin vs. Black gang fights.

However, if history is a good predictor of the nature of these events, 94% of this violence will eventually be discovered to be black-on-black. Within those episodes, I guarantee you that there will be several innocent black victims. They will be innocent in the same sense that Trayvon was not guilty of any crime while walking, snacking, and talking. My bet is that the six-year old girl will more than qualify for such innocence.

How much about the violence of that Chicago weekend did you read on OS? Yet, innocent blacks were brutally victimized in the midst of everyone’s heightened sensitivity over Trayvon.

It seems as if the only black victims that count for OS Liberals are those who are killed by whites. Otherwise, the effort at the keyboard to comment on the death of blameless blacks is not justified by those who proudly wear the mantle of OS Liberalism.

Of course, thought that was truly unbiased would decry all innocent death, without regard to race. However, that would be too much to expect from this crowd at the present time.

As your Conservative brother from another mother, I am telling you that there is every reason in the world to believe that Trayvon’s death WAS tragic. However, those reasons have NOTHING to do with his race, his one toke over the line, his shitty parents, his suspension from school, or his grid-flashing gangbanger wannabe attitude.

Your intellect should guide you to the conclusion that no unarmed high schooler on a snack run should die by the kind of lead poisoning to which Trayvon was subjected – again, no matter what his race, THC level, parental models, or previous behavior.

Think on this and let me know if you change your mind regarding this post.

Chris
Chris, your comment took an unexpected turn as it sounded like some of the liberals who have accused me of blaming the victim.

To be clear, Trayvon did not "deserve" to die. But the more we learn about him the more he fits into the model that Bill Cosby has been shouting about for the past 10 years. Too many blacks turn the other way when they see ignorant unacceptable behavior among their young and too many whites chalk it up to "culture". There is nothing cultural about being stupid enough to call oneself the most odious epithet invented to insult blacks. There is nothing cultural about being a criminal and possession and use of pot is a crime. Trayvon left an Internet trail that showed a downhill slide that no amount of excuse making should mollify.

The Martin/Zimmerman tragedy needs to be framed henceforth as a referendum on gun control. That is the problem. A man clearly unsuited to be carrying a weapon (a dangerous Barney Fife, as I call him) found himself in a situation that got out of hand and he killed an innocent kid (innocent within the confines of this incident).

However this should not be framed as choir boy killed by racist. There is every reason to believe Trayvon was a thug wannabe. Let's stop the hero worship and make sure the laws prevent men like Zimmerman from shooting someone in a panic, which the evidence increasingly shows, is what happened.

P.S. You make a VERY good case about black on black crime. The main stream media wants to leave it to the black community to clean up its own act. It takes men like Cosby to tell the truth. Sadly, there aren't enough of him.
Rutherford,

Thanks for responding. I agree with much of what you write in reply. However, let's think about framing the Martin/Zimmerman incident in terms of gun 'use', not gun 'control', shall we?
Chris I would submit there is no control of gun use without gun control. I'm not sure how you thread that needle.
Although the majority of US homicides are male-on-male,  only those that can involve race or sex are reported, studied or discussed.
Noah, where is the "fun" in talking about a couple of white guys shooting each other ... unless of course the victim is Jewish? Now we've got another "hate crime" to investigate. ;-)
The latest news is that Martin was apparently involved in "fight club" kinds of activities. His YouTube channel contained a couple of videos of kids fighting; he appeared to have some kind of involvement as referee, but exactly what is not clear. Those videos have since been taken down, possibly in an attempt to protect his image. In addition to various attorneys, the Martin family also has the services of a public relations consultant available to them, and it could be that the consultant is working behind the scenes in order to sanitize things.

I notice that even president Obama is no longer talking about Trayvon looking like his hypothetical son. Maybe Obama's hypothetical son doesn't have gold teeth, tattoos, and a "No Limit N****" handle.
I lauded Obama for his statement when he first said it. With more known about Trayvon his statement now does seem incredibly absurd. You can be damn sure Sasha and Malia are never going to have a Twitter handle "NoLimitHo".
Interesting post, complex topic. I personally think you detract from your point with the weight you give the THC content in Trayvon's body (I have a bit in mine right now), but other than that you make some valid points and you are certainly entitled to your POV.

BTW, what happened to P.J. O'Rourke's comment? Did you delete it?
Whirlwind, do you really think I'd delete a comment from PJ O'Roarke? How many famous folks read my stuff .... zero.

Nope, never saw any comment from PJ come across the transom. Are you sure you're not thinking of a comment thread on another blog?
Clicking on PJ's comment in the activity feed on the left column of the cover page is how I came to your post in the first place. I was surprised to not find a comment when I arrived and thought you might have axed him. Must be a system glitch. Carry on.
The OS Gremlins ate my comment last night. First time that happened while the site was running normally. It wasn't a comment of agreement, but I don't feel like a redo.
I will carry on...
Well Paul, you've peaked my curiosity as to the source of your disagreement.

By the way, sorry I mistook you for satirist PJ O'Rourke (Patrick, not Paul). I'm guessing you get that a lot.
@Rutherford Lawson

There is nothing remotely respectful in this BS screed of yours. While you may enjoy that perch high on your moralizing horse nothing you mention about Mr. Martin justifys a death sentence and none of it proves him to be the agressor. Your cute little pal Mr. Zimmerman on the other hand is heading back to lock up for lying about his cash on hand at the Bond hearing. I don't know you so you may have a brood so large you are threatening to repopulate the earth, but I suspect you haven't been responsible for another being more complex than a goldfish from your ignorant ranting about what your child would or would not do. Anyway have fun defending a murderer you seem well suited to it.
Rutherford...

...this essay should be an embarrassment much greater than being found with a Twitter account titled, NoGoodPieceOfShitWhore.

I read the piece. Sorry I did.

If you truly are sick of "ignorant"...you have a very strange way of showing it.
Anthony and Frank, thanks for voicing your opinion. Many of my liberal friends found this post "uncharacteristic" of me.

The bottom line is, I did not write a post about Zimmerman's guilt or innocence. I wrote a post about a thug-wannabe being portrayed as an angel in the press to increase the power and the drama of the story. I wrote a post about our need to stop excusing ignorant behavior. There is sufficient evidence to believe that Trayvon made bad choices in his confrontation with Zimmerman. I don't think it's a far stretch to attribute those choices to a gangsta emulation mode that the kid was in.

Does this mean Zimmerman should walk free? No. Does this mean Trayvon deserved to die? Of course not. But if we don't teach our kids to conduct themselves with dignity and not emulate thugs we are doing them a grand disservice that will make them less prepared to deal with the George Zimmerman's of the world.
