With the announcement that President Obama has agreed to end federal raids on state medical marijuana patients, I thought it would be a good time to expand on an earlier post I did concerning legalizing Hemp farming.
Obama has provided a foot in the door and I hope the door swings open to eventually allow Hemp farming, as it would be a great boost to the economy.
In this post I want to take a better look at the nutrition one can get from Hemp. From my previous post: "Hemp seeds contain a protein that is more nutritious and more economical to produce than soybean protein. Hemp seeds are not intoxicating. Hemp seed protein can be used to produce virtually any product made from soybean: tofu, veggie burgers, butter, cheese, salad oils, ice cream, milk, etc. Hemp seed can also be ground into a nutritious flour that can be used to produce baked goods such as pasta, cookies, and breads."
There is a Canadian company (www.hemphearts.com) which sells Hemp Hearts. Hemp Hearts are simply shelled hemp seeds. From a Czechoslovakian study of Hemp seed:"It was hemp seed, which attracted the author's attention. It is high in protein (33.0%) and its main protein type, edestine, is well known for its wealth of enzymes and unusual amino acid composition. Most valuable is the amino acid arginin, which is considered essential for formation and growth of new tissue.
While other sources of plant protein, for instance soybean protein, contain 6.8% of arginin, edestin contains approximately 3 times as much arginin - 19.0%. This property is of great importance in balancing of diets, requiring high level of arginin."
The study proved that Hemp Hearts could be used to cure Tuberculosis!!
From World-Mysteries.com: "daily consumption of as little as sixty grams of Hemp Hearts with raw vegetables can provide superior health and energy for individuals who previously consumed many times as much ordinary, starch-prominent food. In fact, those who changed to a diet of Hemp Hearts with vegetables usually experienced much better health if they totally avoided the consumption of all breads, all potatoes, all pastas, all cereals and all rice. From their experiences, it also seems that there is no human need for any other vegetable proteins, for any other vegetable oils or even for any animal proteins--except as dietary novelties.
When cultivated by hand and shelled with hand powered machines, hemp plants can easily produce over seven hundred kilograms of Hemp Hearts per acre per year. With appropriate pruning and the cultivation of more than one crop per year, multiples of that production will often be possible. We have proven over the past ten years, therefore, that a single acre of land, farmed by hand, can easily produce sufficient Hemp Hearts and vegetables to guarantee superior health and energy for more than thirty individuals--hemp farm residents, visitors and customers. We have also proven that the seed wastes--the shells, the Hemp Heart fragments and the seeds that are too small for shelling--are perfect feeds, by themselves, for fish, poultry and mammals. It is easily calculated that every one-acre, extended-family, hemp farm would be able to use its hemp seed wastes to produce sufficient poultry, eggs, dairy products, fish and meat to enhance the diets of its residents and visitors as well as many customers--sufficient again for at least thirty individuals from a single one-acre farm."
From www.greathealth.org/hemphearts.htm:
HEMP HEARTS (SHELLED HEMP SEED) IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER FOODS
*Contains more required amino acids (proteins) than milk, meat or eggs.
*Is a complete protein source, much more balanced & digestible than Soy products.
*Contains about 47% oil, 78% of which is omega 3 & 6, the essential fats.
*Contains all the essential or omega fats required for human health.
*Contains several times more omega 3 essential fat than any fish.
*Provides more energy than energy bars without their sugar and with less saturated fat.
*Is suitable for those unable to eat gluten, sugar, milk, nuts & meat.
*Is perfect for those troubled with constipation and for those avoiding carbohydrates.
*A 42 g serving (4 tbsp) contains 240 cal energy from 15 g protein, 15 g polyunsaturated fats ( 11.4 g omega 6 & 3.6 g omega 3), 2.7 g mono-unsaturated fats, 2.1 g saturated fats, 2.5 g fiber, 4.5 g carbohydrates, 2 mg iron, 31 mg calcium, 3.8 mg sodium, 3.8 mg vitamin E, 956 IU vitamin D, .42 mg vitamin C, .05 mg vitamin B6, .14 mg vitamin B2, .58 mg vitamin B1, 1.68 IU vitamin A.
========================
Bottom line is that besides the over 20,000 industrial uses which can be derived from Hemp, it is also an outstanding source of protein and other nutrients.
Hemp cultivation outside of the U.S. in areas that typically suffer from famine and poor farming management, could produce sufficient protein to solve much of the worlds hunger problems.
Our government should allow for Hemp farming across the entire U.S. as soon as possible. This would be at least one good legacy for Obama.

Hemp is legal to grow in much of the world. It's just not as useful as it's advocates make it to be. From my readings on the subject, hemp is a generalist plant. You can do almost anything with it, however, it is rarely the best choice for any application. Well, normally we go with the best choice in the real world, not just with the choice that can work.
I take your point perdidochas, however, there are some big money interests that would not like to see Hemp developed to its full potential. Where Hemp is grown in the rest of the world, it is used in a limited number of applications. If we could go full bore on Hemp farming here in the U.S., you would see a tremendous benefit.
Next up: ALL of the hemp plant is useful...
Seeds for eating (Toasted they are amazingly nutty... toss some in your next batch of cookies and you will NEVER go back to putting tree nuts in your cookies)
Seeds for various types of oil from delicate salad oil to MOTOR Oil (In point of FACT Rudolph Diesel's invention was DESIGNED to be run on either HEMP oil or on PEANUT oil and NOT on Petroleum)
Seeds toasted can be used as a substitute for coffee... just like Chickory roots.
Fibers for rope
Fibers for cloth (from delicate silk-like cloth to sailcloth)
Fibers for paper (from Toilet paper to the finest, most expensive linen papers available today) Both the Declaration of Independence AND the Constitution are printed on Hemp Paper. Darn stuff takes MUCH longer to deteriorate than wood pulp paper... OH and as an added bonus... IT IS WASHABLE PAPER!
