Is Humanity Worth Saving?

Rate: 7 Flag

As I mentioned in a previous post, our son's school lets us visit for lunch. I usually really enjoy these visits. Today, both the wife and I were able to go and it was a treat for our son to see both of us. Usually, only one of us is able to go for one reason or another.

Our son (2nd grader) can pick up to two friends to join him for lunch. One of the kids he picked today had been an abused child. The birth father lost custody after throwing scalding water on his son. The kid was 2 or 3 at the time. I had a chance to observe this kid as he was eating. He wore a shirt that came down to his forearms. I counted at least eight different significant scars on his forearms and one on his nose. His little arms shook slightly but constantly and his speech indicated he had some neurological issues.

Matthew 7:1 advises "Judge not lest ye be not judged." Sometimes that is much easier said than done. What kind of evil does it take to harm an innocent child? Should not the evil doer be punished?

Evil has always been with us and there has been murder and many other horrible crimes committed throughout history.  In recent times though, we seem to be putting the pedal to the metal in terms of the ever increasing evil we do to each other.

From AP Nov. 4, 2009: MEXICO CITY — "Three doctors and a nurse have been arrested for allegedly selling newborns after telling mothers their babies had died at a private hospital in Mexico City, authorities said Wednesday."

From Reuters (Moscow): Russian police have arrested three homeless people suspected of eating a 25-year-old man they had butchered and selling other bits of the corpse to a local kebab house.

From AC:  Suspected serial killer Anthony Sowell appeared in a Cleveland courtroom Wednesday. His lawyer asked for bond, stating that Anthony Sowell was a Cleveland resident, had a medical condition, a pacemaker. Prosecutors argued that the man was an imminent threat to the community and anywhere he might be. Judge Ronald Adrine denied bond and called the allegations against Anthony Sowell some of the most serious he had ever seen. And although he was only being charged with five counts of aggravated murder, the judge also knew that five more bodies had been found at Anthony Sowell's east Cleveland residence, bringing the total number of bodies recovered in the house and on the grounds to 11.

From WJZ13: Police in North Carolina say more charges are coming in the case of a missing 5-year-old girl whose body was found dumped along a wooded road. .....Particularly disturbing were the accusations against Shaniya's mother, 25-year-old Antoinette Davis. Police charged Davis with human trafficking and felony child abuse, saying Shaniya was offered for sex.

From FOX News: BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. —  A man angered after a dispute with his wife confessed to tossing his four young children off a bridge, authorities said Wednesday as they searched murky waters for the bodies.

And the list goes on and on. Not everyone is bad, of course, but I do have to wonder, considering the worldwide scope of death and destruction we are seeing, if it isn't time for God to just go ahead and drop the hammer on us.

What kind of future do our children have?

I'm sure that's part of it Neil, but I also think we are getting worse and devolving as a species.

Thank you for commenting.
Good to see you commenting Don. I agree with you. I will have to start commenting on your stuff after I read it.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this planet or humanity that a significant asteroid strike would not cure immediately.
How true Frank, how true.
i am tempted to say, that over-crowded lab-rats exhibit dysfunctional behavior like baby-eating. definitely too many hoomin beans around, for my taste..

but history has endless examples of humans acting badly. it's marvelous that we even form an ideal of 'humane' behavior. americans are notably 'not my brother's keepers', and this lack of community spirit may make for a higher incidence of inhumane behavior, but just out toward the edge, not dis associatiated
RW....The human race has never been worth saving. Still we try and I'm not sure what that says about us.
Humans have been victimizing each other in twisted, sadistic ways for an awful long time. We're just more aware of it now because the media feeds us a new abused child every week because we apparently love reading about it.

As for whether God should drop the hammer on us - not an option, despite the fact that I believe that the universe was created by a sentient something-or-other, I also believe that we are a biological species and like every other one on Earth we're going to fight to the last breath for survival because that's what biological species do.

And that stuff about God sending a flood or some other catastrophe to kill us all - just a psychological projection on our parts: wishing death upon those who we believe are evil doers, but casting God (who is above reproach in our minds) as the agent because we don't want to admit that we ourselves want for masses of humans to be exterminated.

anyway - that's my .02.
Could be Al.

I don't know Torman. Why can't everyone just be decent to each other?

That's as good a take on it as any, fins2theleft, but we should not "want" any human exterminated. (Yet we do)

God must be pretty disappointed in man too David.

As usual, all comments are appreciated. Always nice to get the opinions of others, regardless of ideology.
A few bad 'uns dont make the world bad. I am eternally hopeful. The arc of all human endeavors bends towards progress ......and if not, we shall be eliminated. Believe you me history teaches us that the situation was far far worse in the past. Society has indeed come together in many ways. Yes, there are slip ups and there are the exceptions.
Have yu noticed RW that people never talk about thinsg good becasue "goodness" is expected. its always the sensational, the bad, the crooked, the disatisfied that fills in the survey and what brings in teh money. That is what we get to hear and see. In this case it is most unfortunate with the little friend and child of ours. I am hoping he can get over it and come out stronger. Thank you for showing me this side of you.
If you really believe you cannot lose hope.
A soul's depravity can travel the generations, just as hope and faith does depart from the trip. ~R~
I appreciate your optimism Traveller.

Chuck Stetson quote: "A soul's depravity can travel the generations..." an excellent point Chuck. (In fact, man's depravity only increases with time) From Matthew 12: 43-45: 43"When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation."
Considering that not that long ago in our culture it was perfectly acceptable to send children to do all kinds of dangerous work in mines and factories I would say that we have advanced some. Even that we now have the concept of child abuse is an advancement. Since at one time a child was for the parent to do whatever they wanted to do with. 100 years ago not many would have thought twice about things we consider to be abuse today.
I entirely share your dismay, rw, although I tend to agree with the other contributors here that we are simply more aware of what is going on around us thanks to instant reporting. In addition, our consciousness has been raised enormously in recent decades. Tragically, rape, child abuse, spouse abuse etc. seem pretty much endemic in the world's societies, but it's only now that these stories are coming out into the open and being dealt with as a serious problem. The same is probably true for the Catholic sex abuse scandal, which has almost certainly been going on for centuries but was simply covered up more effectively. (Just the other day I heard a report about 10,000 disadvantaged British children who were deported to Australia "for their own good," and raped and beaten every step of the way. The practise ended in 1967, but the world has only heard about it now.) In fact, it's conceivable that due to increased sensibility and better treatment opportunities, there may even be LESS of the sort of thing you cite going on in today's world than ever before. So my suggestion would be that you do not despair or meekly wait for God to "drop the hammer," but feel encouraged that such things are finally being taken seriously. You might also actively work to reduce such violence in the future (and by writing this article may even be doing so in your own way).

Ted and Alan, I understand your points and concede that technology has made it possible to become more aware of these horrible crimes.

I still feel that we are becoming more evil, but there is a small core of kindness that will survive after we have been judged.
