Well, I'm not exactly unemployed, but the wife and I each work part time jobs that together bring in one sixth to one eighth of my previous income. (And no, you do not keep the house or the car that's not paid off based on that kind of income reduction)
If you are unemployed or under employed and have been sending out hundreds of resumes and wondering why you have not found a job this is probably why: (From Huffpo)
"Still waiting for a response to the 300 resumés you sent out last month? Bad news: Some companies are ignoring all unemployed applicants.
In a current job posting on The People Place, a job recruiting website for the telecommunications, aerospace/defense and engineering industries, an anonymous electronics company in Angleton, Texas, advertises for a "Quality Engineer." Qualifications for the job are the usual: computer skills, oral and written communication skills, light to moderate lifting. But red print at the bottom of the ad says, "Client will not consider/review anyone NOT currently employed regardless of the reason."
In a nearly identical job posting for the same position on the Benchmark Electronics website, the red print is missing. But a human resources representative for the company confirmed to HuffPost that the The People Place ad accurately reflects the company's recruitment policies.
"It's our preference that they currently be employed," he said. "We typically go after people that are happy where they are and then tell them about the opportunities here. We do get a lot of applications blindly from people who are currently unemployed -- with the economy being what it is, we've had a lot of people contact us that don't have the skill sets we want, so we try to minimize the amount of time we spent on that and try to rifle-shoot the folks we're interested in."
There are about 5.5 (My add--that's way low. The last retail job interview I had was where I was one of SIXTY people being INTERVIEWED. I was culled from an applicant pool of hundreds) people looking for work for every job available, according to the latest data from the Labor Department.
Sony Ericsson, a global phone manufacturer that recently announced that it would be bringing 180 new jobs to the Buckhead, Ga. area, also recently posted an ad for a marketing position on The People Place. The add specified: "NO UNEMPLOYED CANDIDATES WILL BE CONSIDERED AT ALL." When asked about the ad, a spokeswoman said, "This was a mistake, and once it was noticed it was removed."
Ads asking the unemployed not to apply are easy to find. A Craigslist ad for assistant restaurant managers in Edgewater, N.J. specifies, "Must be currently employed." Another job posting for a tax manager at an unnamed "top 25 CPA firm" in New York City contains the same line in all caps....................."
Also, any time you apply for a job via a computer terminal or online the company you are applying to routinely uses screening programs to cull potential employees. I have many years of retail sales and management experience, but since I am well over forty, I am basically unemployable in retail management due to my age.
Bottom line is if you are unemployed the above article makes it clear you are wasting your time looking for work at a company you do not have a personal contact with. So, what do you do when your unemployment benefits run out? (Or, if you were self employed--such as yours truly-- and get no unemployment benefits and have to dumpster dive for food)
The answer is that you starve to death. This will create some new job openings as some folks will get hired to remove the corpses.

Just very wrong all around. And RWnutjob I do think it is possible to collect unemployment when you are self-employed but I have no doubt that the conditions to qualify are a real pain in the ass. I do encourage you to abandon your pride and access whatever programs are available, like food stamps.
Best of luck woodclogkitten.
H.W., it definately sucks.
Ablonde quote: "And RWnutjob I do think it is possible to collect unemployment when you are self-employed but I have no doubt that the conditions to qualify are a real pain in the ass."
Not in my state Ablonde. I must say, however, that it has been an educational, but highly depressing experience. During my first trip to the unemployment office there were at least a dozen (illegal?) migrant workers filling out paperwork and voter registration cards. Their kids also get a free education via the Migrant Head Start program. (of the $4400/yr I was paying in property tax, $1263 went for the school levy, yet if you are in the U.S. illegally you get a free education--hope those votes are worth it Dems.)
While the illegals and others who play the system were getting $25/month section 8 housing, $400/month in food stamps, WIC etc. I was told, since I'm a college educated white guy, that my family qualifies for $18/week for food stamps, but I'd have to work 30-40 hours/week at the state job center to "earn" that benefit. I also could get no unemployment benefits since I was self employed.
So much for an over 30 year work history of paying into the system. Yet, when I need a little help none is available, but if I'm lazy human trash or an illegal that plays the system I can get all the assistance I need, then something has gone seriously wrong.
10-4 ONL.
Good luck to both you and Mrs. Nutjob in the job search!
'Tis a sad day with no hope RW. A sad day indeed
I agree Mission.
Honestly, I never thought I would see the day when someone who was willing and able to work could not find a job..........and when you consider the crew we have running the country and our largest corporations, well...................sheesh.
It does suck, I've despised every job for 8 years and have been underemployed for 10. No college degree so I can't apply, oh well, I no longer fit the criteria. You get used to it and soon you learn to scrape by. It really does suck though.
Jack, a violent revolution IS coming. Man, will it be ugly.
Don't give up looking and remember to think non-linear. Survival is about how willing you are to compromise your ethics for the sake of success.
Even if that means 'faking employment' to do it.
