The execution of that boy and the suicide bombing are nothing out of the ordinary for the Taliban, just business as usual, as was the gas recently on Afghan school girls. And that's why I disagree with my friends on the left who draw a moral equivalency between the actions of the Taliban and the actions of US/NATO forces. Far too many civilians have died in Afghanistan as the result of US presence, in air strikes gone awry for instance, but it's not policy with us to target innocents as it is with the Taliban. That may seem like a small difference to some, but it's not, it's a major difference. I sometimes ask people who advocate the immediate withdrawal of coalition forces what they think the result of our leaving would be, and if they think that result would ultimately mean more or less suffering for the Afghan people. My money is on more, because I've studied the Taliban closely and they're among the most repressive, backwards, brutal regimes in modern history. They aren't an Afghan nationalist movement, they're a savagely fundamentalist Pashtun movement who would reimpose their twisted version of Sharia over the millions of Tajiks and Uzbeks and Hazaras and others who want NOTHING to do with their sickness. Quite aside from the moral aspect of it, which isn't necessarily a good basis for foreign policy, it's just not in our interests to pull out and let the Taliban roll back into power, returning Afghanistan to being a giant Disneyland for terrorists. We tried that once before, and all you need to do to see how well that worked out for us is watch video of the WTC falling down.

Or to put it another way, the Taliban regaining control of Afghanistan would be roughly as horrible as if the Christian right gained control of this country. ;-)
