When Al Jazeera is considered a more objective news source than any U.S. MSM, it's time to take action. Y'all know I don't have a pot to piss in at the moment, however, it's time to get a truly objective news source going. With an editorial board composed of a few liberals and a few conservatives such as myself to make sure the news IS objectively and professionally reported, we would have a long overdue service to provide to the general public.

There is a ton of writing and other professional talent on OS. I have an idea of how this could work starting on a shoestring budget. Essentially, it would be an employee owned news organization free from political pressure to slant the news one way or the other.

Post a reply if you may have an interest and I'll offer more details. If there are any lawyers out there who might want to help out with a pro-bono incorporation/set up, please reply too.

======================================

As businesses grow, they tend to get top heavy and when you couple that with the fact that most large companies are run by psychopaths and sociopaths who make as much as 30k/hr. you have a recipe for failure.

This news organization would start as an internet based outfit. Management would be kept to a minimum and a detailed corporate charter would limit executive pay to reasonable levels.

I have always had a problem with pay per click advertising as it is subject to abuse and it makes it difficult to budget your ad expense. Also, Google (Adsense-which everyone seems to use) ownership is too political for my taste. This news organization would  charge a set fee for ad placement and control it in-house. Account executives would solicit advertisers.

The website would have a simple logical layout starting with national news and readers could then select news by state/country.

Each state would have a state director under which would be the reporters and an advertising account executives. Larger states would have a few deputy state directors. A national editorial board consisting of, say, three liberals and three conservatives would attempt to guarantee that the news stories were presented in an objective manner. Strict guidelines for reporters would help ensure that only the basic 5w's and one H of a news story were reported without political slant one way or another.

OS members would provide the initial group of reporters, which would give us immediate coverage in all 50 states.  Eventually, a small studio would be developed so that a couple of news anchors could deliver the national news over the internet. (The commercial real estate market is still in the tank in many areas and a small building could be purchased on the cheap) Reporters would be actual employees instead of independent contractors and would be paid on a per story basis.  My wife works for a CPA and there are payroll programs out there that can calculate state and local taxes so that a minimal staff would be needed for accounting purposes. Human resources personnel would also be kept to a minimum.

Press credentials would be issued by the national headquarters. News stories would be syndicated in a manner similar to AP. The news organization would own the rights to any photos/video taken by the reporters but would allow attribution. Equipment such as still or video cameras would initially be furnished by each reporter. Later, a buying pool would be established to purchase basic equipment at a discount by the reporters. When ad revenue was sufficient, the organization would purchase the equipment. Basic HD video cameras can be had for under $300 on sale.

The news anchor broadcasts would eventually go 24 hours and, hopefully, a satellite transponder could be leased or a satellite could be launced. (These aren't cheap, but they are not as pricey as you think either) Broadcast trucks could be purchased as ad revenue allows.

At a minimum, even working part time for a legitimate news organization would look good on a resume and hopefully the busier reporters could generate full time revenue. The key is to keep overhead low and pay reasonable.

This is not a pie in the sky deal. With the right start up talent this organization could be up and running in a relatively short period of time. Website design could be done by capable volunteers, with possible future reimbursement.

It would take time and effort to get going, but it certainly could be done.

Please give this serious consideration. It CAN work.
as an underemployed former small town newspaper hack, sounds interesting-
You can count me in dear....love this!!
Thanks Token and Mission. Please help circulate this on OS. I'll need at least 25 interested people and then the serious planning can start. Anyone with an advertising background, web design and lawyers who can volunteer please let me know if you can help.
RW I think I may kiss you for this line alone: "When Al Jazeera is considered a more objective news source than any U.S. MSM," I have been saying for about 5 years now that Al Jazeera is a more objective source of information than ANY "Western" press. I know people in the UK and Sweden who have also said the same thing so I think you may be on to something here.
I think I am too MrsRaptor. We need a sanctuary news outlet where we can go for "just the facts" reporting. The only way it can be successful is if it has grass roots origin. Novices can be trained in proper reporting techniques in fairly short order. Also, non-confiscatory advertising rates on a totally apolitical network would have huge advertising appeal. (And in these current economic times, that's important)
Actually, "Sanctuary News" is a GOOD name for it.
That might be the ticket MrsRaptor. I hope I can get enough interest and help to at least explore the concept further. There are several web design folks on OS. I wish they would reply for further discussion.
I like the idea. But remember, the biggest obstacle of all is capitalization.
Indeed ONL. It would certainly be a timely venture with the world as it is now. Finding investors, particularly ones who are not looking for stellar returns is not easy but I think the concept is solid.

Again, the right core group could get this going.
Ok- I've already threatened a county prosecutor with exposure in "Sanctuary News" over the incarceration of the guy who cuts my grass for "Felony Burglary" after he got drunk and wandered into a neighbors apartment at 5 in the morning. ( The guy who cuts my grass, not the prosecutor-unfortunately) where do we go from here?-

Somewhat just kidding- I've been to these rodeos before, and belonging to the biggest church in the county seat and spreading the story with my fellow parishioners, is what will have him wondering about his next election ( the prosecutor, not the guy who cuts my grass)
Token, ya just gotta love politicians.

In an earlier reply you mentioned you used to work for a small town newspaper. I actually have some newspaper experience as well. I used to be a part time district manager for the Virginian Pilot. The expense and logistics of distributing a large circulation news paper are pretty incredible. A building was actually built around the then new printing press when they got it. (They had just switched from Linotype machines when I started working for them) I understand the potential expense of a news enterprise, but the website would need to get developed first. I know we have people on OS who do this kind of website development, but as I am considered a troll I suppose I was a bit optimistic in my expectation of assistance. Still, hopefully, more folks will express an interest.

I really would like to develop this concept further.
RW

It is a very interesting idea- I loved the Prosecutor’s secretary’s somewhat cautious response to the notion that the local paper might become interested in the affairs of a (recovering?) drug addict who at least with a little help from his neighbors manages to support himself and his wife. And being presented with the notion that as a taxpayer, I saw no good reason for us to support him for the next 5 years. (Either the prosecutor and Carl)

Also the notion that such “overcharging” might be construed as denial of bail and hence a federal civil right suit which might interest a lawyer friend in Columbus who makes some money at such things. When I worked at a small newspaper in north central Ohio, I worked at getting the local Judge disbarred because of his cozy relationship with his spouse, who was the director of Childrens' Services, and never seemed to think kids, who grew up with incest as a given., needed protection from parents who viewed it as a right.
Didn’t quite manage it, but he did retire……

I must confess to enjoying such windmill tilts- as you seem to, My thought is that those of us more or less considered “Trolls” by the liberal elite of OS are just the ones to start an online news service-----

How would you feel about interviewing a county prosecutor for “Sanctuary News?” If the church people don’t spring Carl I may up the ante a bit—he was arrested after cutting half my lawn, so I’m kind of peeved.
Sounds good Token. I'd also be pissed if I only got half my lawn cut.

I also agree it will be some of the OS outcasts that get this thing going, but help from a few of the regular OS'ers would be nice too.
You ain't considered a troll by me nutjob. I think of you like anyone else here. I support many of the same things you do.
I like this idea. I have no background in editing nor newspaper reporting. but I would damn sure love to see this off and running. I have found a site that gathers all the alternative news onto one page already. Newblok.com it is.
I laugh at the idea of you being a troll. hell, you are welcome over on my porch anytime of the day or night. You just speak your mind, like me. A popularity contest life ain't dear.
RW-- other things going on, but I will keep this in mind, contact by PM
Mission, thanks.

Token and Mission, I'll keep this post up for a while and see if anyone else may be interested.

Someone who develpos websites and would not mind doing some volunteer work, please reply.
I have absolutely no ability to build websites but at one time I was the Director of Public Relations and Newsletters for the United States Navy-Marine Corps MARS system.

Websites can be developed in a variety of ways. When creating them it is ususually helpful to have some sort of software or template.

It really depends on how you want to do it and who will host your website when you complete it. (Websites can be designed using the HTML language, or even software like Homepage.)

If you want to start free and cheap you can design your own website in a variety of places. (Yahoo?)

If you are going to pay a host annually to give you some space on the web for your site, and try to develop a website of professional quality then you need to do a little research and find out what type of websites your host will support.

I hope this helps a little. I am not a web developer, and I am not a journalist. I just wanted to add my thoughts. Good luck!
We can certainly use your advice MrsRaptor.

Thanks for info tai. I'll check into it.
You are the Greatest American Man on OS for this kind of yeoman work!...wink
The only currency of value in a news media is credibility. Therefore, we must start by upgrading some of the founders' names - yours, in particular. How's about something along the lines of Rupert W. Nutjob? We might even work on that surname a tad.
CA!!! Welcome back.

Matt, I get your point, but in terms of MSM credibility, they have none. There is no where to go but up. Businesswise, I actually can separate the personal from the professional.
