2010 International Talk Like A Pirate Day

Rate: 1 Flag

International talk like a pirate dayYaaarrrrr Matey! International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a crazy holiday created back in 1995 by Ol' Chumbucket and Cap'n Slappy of Albany Oregon, who proclaimed 19th September each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. If you're taking party in this holiday, try not to go overboard with the "Hello," but with "Ahoy, matey!"

Ol' Chumbucket and Cap'n Slappy one day decided it would be a good idea to dedicate a special day every year to speaking like pirates. They settled on 19 September, and for seven years they and a few friends would dedicate this day every year to speaking in only their beloved pirate slang. Then in 2002, after Ol' Chumbucket and Cap'n Slappy enlisted the help of journalist Dave Berry, Talk Like a Pirate Day went global. Since then, this silly but fun holiday has gained popularity all over the world, with a growing number of people each year pledging to talk like a pirate for the day, either to raise money for charity or just for the pure joy of saying "arrrr" at the beginning of every sentence.

Baur and Summers now sell books and T-shirts on their website related to the theme. Part of the success has been attributed to the lack of restrictions surrounding the event, so it's essentially a free for all. This has resulted inthe holiday exploding around the world due to viral growth.

A lot of people dress up in pirate costumes today, so that might explain why you've been hearing lots of sailor talk. Since the growth of this day, you'll find even the night clubs getting in the spirit by putting on pirate theme nights, I'm evening going to one myself tonight. While this event is mainly celebrated in North America, you'll find that Japan and Europe have been catching on to the pirate crazy. You can visit the International Talk Like a Pirate Day Facebook Page to get in on the fun, or you can read all about it on the webpage.
