Bio
I'm Ryan Ebersole, and this is my first blog. I am a graduate student at the University of Southern Mississippi, studying counseling psychology. So far, I've managed to survive down here in Mississippi, although I've lived in Indiana, Texas, Illinois, Florida and Puerto Rico. Hopefully I add another state to that list soon! I'm hopelessly idealistic when it comes to my world view, although I try to approach it from a pragmatic view. However, I'd rather be wrong a lot then to give up my faith in humanity. As a gay man, I take the rights of my community very seriously. I hope to be a little mini-advocate; I want to spread news about my community in the hopes of growing support for our full equal rights. I also help to shed light on what ignorance can foster: anti-LGBTQA violence and pain. Ultimately, I'm a happy guy, with an odd sense of humor and a sense of ridiculousness. In the end, I just hope you read my blog! :)

Chick Fil-A Debate Largely Misses The Point

Rate: 13 Flag

Chick Fil A

The debate over equal rights for LGBT Americans has recently focused, bizarrely, on an American fast food staple: the chicken sandwich. Specifically, Chick Fil-A, the Atlanta-based fast food giant that purports to follow "Christian values." Chick Fil-A's President and COO, Dan Cathy, recently proclaimed his support for "Biblical" marriage. A war of words arose, with those of the left boycotting Chick Fil-A, and those on the right tweeting pictures of themselves eating waffle fries. However, the real point of this debate has been lost in the rush to score political points.

It is not Cathy's statements, however ignorant, that are the fundamental issue; it is Chick Fil-A's financial support of blatantly, and often vehemently, anti-gay organizations.

First, let's look at Cathy's comments. In an interview on The Ken Coleman Show, Cathy stated, "I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.' And I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is about."

Liberal and LGBT-rights groups immediately decried these comments and encouraged their supporters to avoid the chicken sandwich chain. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi tweeted, "For the record, I prefer Kentucky Fried Chicken." The Democratic mayors of Boston, Washington D.C., Newark, Philadelphia, and Chicago all spoke out against the company in favor of LGBT rights. New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a Democrat, launched a petition, joining a New York University student-led petition with over 15,000 signatures, asking the university to remove the restaurant from the campus. The Jim Henson company pulled its toys from Chick Fil-A's kid's meals. "Kiss-ins" in front of Chick Fil-A restaurants were called for.

Not surprisingly, the response from the conservative spectrum was the opposite. Former governor, Fox News host and failed presidential nominee Mike Huckabee praised Chick Fil-A, called for a "Chick Fil-A Appreciation Day," and called the reaction by LGBT groups and allies "economic bullying." Sarah Palin tweeted a picture of herself buying Chick Fil-A.

However, the real reason that those who support equality should avoid the chicken sandwich chain is who Chick Fil-A donates money to. Chick Fil-A donated at least $5 million to anti-gay groups between 2003 and 2010. In 2010 alone, Chick Fil-A, through its charitable arm, donated $1.9 million to anti-gay causes. These include organizations such as Exodus International and the Family Research Council that actively work to spread disinformation and prejudice about gays and lesbians.

Exodus International is a religious organization that, under the guise of therapy, promotes the idea that non-heterosexual orientations are disordered, perverse, diseased, and immoral. This organization operates by reinforcing societal prejudices in vulnerable individuals and claims that, through "reparative therapy" including therapy, prayer, and medical treatments, gays and lesbians can become heterosexual. However, this notion that sexual orientation can be altered has been thoroughly condemned by multiple medical and psychological organizations including the American Psychological Association, which condemns the practice as unethical, ineffective, and harmful. Exodus International also participated in a 2009 conference in Uganda discussing how to "wipe out" homosexuality in that country. That conference including appalling discussions of psychological and physical torture of gays and lesbians, and not long after, Uganda's Kill The Gays bill was introduced by a participant of that conference.

The Family Research Council has an anti-gay track record that is cringe-worthy. In fact, it has been labeled a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center for its repeated heinous and inaccurate statements about LGBT Americans. Prominent members of the FRC often publicly make wildly prejudicial statements against LGBT Americans including, among other things, that being gay makes one more likely to be a pedophile, that repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell would lead to an increase of same-sex rape, and that homosexuality ought to be criminalized. Tony Perkins, president of FRC, wrote an ugle article in the Washington Post following public suicides of gay teens after intense bullying. In his article, he blames their suicide on their "sexual conduct," calling the teens mentally disordered for being gay. This group lobbies against any rights for LGBT Americans including non-discrimination laws, and any legal recognition of same-sex relationships.

Again, the point is not Cathy's words. He, like every American, has the constitutional right to make any such statements, regardless of how insulting they may be. And no, there shouldn't be a boycott over his statements, for if we boycotted a company every time their leaders said something insensitive or bigoted, there would hardly be a company for Americans to spend their money at.

The point is, as many media organizations seem to have conveniently forgotten, the donations to anti-gay groups that come from Chick Fil-A's profits.

So if you decide to eat at Chick Fil-A, do so with the knowledge that some portion of your profit goes to fund efforts to spread prejudice against gays and lesbians and deny them equal rights. Some of that money may go to a group that shames gay youths into thinking that they are disordered or perverts and in need of therapy. Or it may go to a hate group that goes on television and falsely claims that "pedophilia is a homosexual problem."

Personally, I find that their chicken sandwich just isn't worth it.

Ryan, thank you for this excellent review and clarification of the issue.
Ryan, you make the point perfectly. Follow the money. And the Family Research Council is a fine Exhibit A. My daughter asked me to write about the early boycott-Chick Fil-A movement last year, but to my regret I didn't get around it. Now, with the sound-bite wars, everybody's on it. But you are really on it, and for excellent reasons.
"I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is about."

Credulous, brainwashed imbecile saaayyy WHAT?

As you are probably aware, formal education came late to the South, prior to that, and the tradition continues today in many ways, young'in was taut' on de old front porch ...and as a result the forged, frauding lies of Ol' Dixie's Consensus History and primitive religious views have been perpetuated for centuries.

Forget the traitorous Confederacy for a moment ("Let those for Slavery have it practiced on them."- Honest Abe), the prideful, audacious arrogance of credulity and hate enables the hater to pretend that in Jesus' time and for the next 1800 years of Church History "God" allowed marriage only between one man and one woman.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

What it must be like to be a brainwashed hating sheeple-shephard?

WITHOUT QUESTION (check the always helpful, and Vatican scroll backed, Catholic Encyclopedia, as usual a read between the lines says it all) "marriage" during this short period of nearly 2 church documented millennia this was absolutely NOT the case. In fact, concubinage was all the rage, in and out of the faith.

So, the Big Chick's entire existence is simply a card house of lies, one on top of another on top of another.

No wonder they HATE scientists and historians so much!!! Now, if you are a gay historian who went to an "elite" university he and his ilk hate you so much it defies description- but, in even a cursory review of the FACTS that is no wonder :(

Auwe (Alas)
Update: Hate speech is not covered by First Amendment as protected speech. People do not have the RIGHT to hate, nor to spread it. It is actually a crime. People go to jail for it everyday, but only the poor haters, the rich haters just buy a fast food chain.
So if I am against gay marriage, I hate gay people? If I am not totally on board with your agenda, I am a hater? Do you hate me for not being for gay marriage? If I support civil unions and basic rights for gay couples just ask them not to redefine a word that has been hundreds of civilizations for thousands of years that in many cases never interacted with each other and up to 10 years ago was not even up to debate, I am a neanderthal Redneck?
We have rushed to this conclusion in a span of time that is 1/10000 of an inch on a yardstick and hold violent contempt for all those pathetic mortals . Congrats
Yes, you are a hater if you persecute gay people for following that which they must do to remain rational. Their sexual and marriage arrangements in no way injure other people. You are persecuting them for no sensible reason and you are a hater.
I know many rational people, some are single, some are in committed relationships . Most are straight, a few are not. I know many irrational people, most are married or have been.
In society money is power. To participate in donating money to a person using that power for purposes of persecuting innocent people out of some dogmatic delusion makes one responsible, if only to a minuscule degree, for that persecution. That is inescapable.
You want to change a world view held for thousands of years by billions of people living and dead and still currently held by 80% of the planet by calling it dogmatic and delusion is not rational . You might get support here and in Scandinavia but, a more tolerant, empathatic view might help your cause.

Of course I want to change a world oriented towards mindless vicious foolishness. Any idiot can perceive that and repeating that endlessly is generous approbation I find delightful as it only qualifies the unanswerable justice and decency of my point of view. If you relish basic groundless nastiness because it is popular then do not criticize me for totally disdaining your spineless behavior.
"I am n"....ot right! My views are lies. The Catholic Encyclopedia proves this beyond any doubt, but, I am not able to deal with it.

I am Polynesian. Our BEAUTIFUL Mahu cousins have been getting hitched for much longer than Forging, Frauding Fake Church Fathers have been telling lies and scraping selections of original scrolls clean, selectively, and re-writing them.
Brother Jan- it took some time but I knew eventually US GUYS would agree on something! Glad it was something this important.
@Oahusurfer

Fine, but two of us is not enough. Where the hell is everybody else with a basic sense of decency and sensible behavior to chase the cockroaches back into the cracks in the walls?
Thanks for fleshing out the issue Ryan. Were it just a matter of bullshit walking then the fuss would be overblown. But as Dylan wrote "Money doesn't talk, it swears".
Thanks. I wrote on this a few months back and I'm delighted you're raising up the real issues again.

r.
All true.

But in defense of the people who leaped to their various positions on hearing Cathy's words, it was no secret that he put his money where his mouth is, and the focus on his words was a kind of short-hand (legit in this case).

Sickening to hear of the line-ups and traffic jams occasioned by bigots rushing to *support* a heartless and heart-attack-inducing business.
Bottom line is what Jan said - gay marriage (gay anything) doesn't hurt anyone and is nobody else's business. Jay - you're for everything except the final word, marriage? Definitions change all the time. Traditions of thousands of years and billions of people can stink. (Many of them are cruel.) And as Oahu says, the one-man-one-woman scenario in tradition just ain't so anyway.
Myriad,
Yes it is basically. I also fear that there will be attacks for hundreds of years by taditioalists, especially when you reach your desired goal of forcing people to publicly be passive but in secret have some real strong negative views.
The environment you will create by truly changing the definition will not be one of love and acceptance by all-ever. You have a growing Muslim population never mind traditional Xians.
You want to change their hearts then, you had better have love in it for them.
Jan-you have contempt for me then, you will never be an agent for change -just someone who feels superior as he points out all the bad guys.
This is exactly what the media focus should be. Thanks for getting it right.

Also, I've been careful about saying this, but might as well get up on the soapbox for just a second. I've been a vegetarian since the early seventies, and don't eat at fast food restaurants. It makes me angry that we are offered so much unhealthy salty fatty nasty food that also creates miserable short drugged lives for chickens and cows. Humans and animals alike suffer. The Chick Fil-A thing seems another example of narrow minds accompanying unhealthy practices. These can often go together.

You look like a fine young person in your avatar, smart, unafraid, noisy. Make lots of noise about this. Use your life to make change. I have great faith in youth.
Here's a great piece on the subject - http://www.owldolatrous.com/?p=288
Jay, how about some love from the Christians? (Or fundamentalist Christians ... lotsa liberal Christians have no prob w. gay.) Nobody's forcing change in useage - that comes about every day in language and customs. What's it to you what people down the street do in the privacy of their own homes? Are they into YOUR business?
Thanks for writing so well about this and making the comments about Chick's relationship to Exodus and FRC. Well done. I happily report I have never had a Chick-Fil-A encounter. :-)
Myriad,
You do not think there has been great movement(s)s by Xians on this issue ? The bible will not be re-written so as much as you want it so, you are asking for endless conflict.
FYI, I live in Boston and frequent the Cape. I cannot bring my children to Provincetown without finding some incredibly horrible displays in store fronts on the main drag (I will leave it). That does not help the cause.
"The bible will not be re-written ..."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!

Nothing in the herstory of Earth has been re-written more than the LITTLE BOOKS. Nothing. The Codex Sinaiticus alone has over 20,000 admitted and documented changes. This year yet another revision (actually several this year, yawn) has been released -- http://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2012/07/30/new-bible-translation-has-screenplay-format -- this is a forum of educated people, why, exactly, are you here? You expect us to suddenly believe stupid lies designed to control and exert authority over credulous, scared and un-educated people?

I've been surfing the Cape for over 40 years- how refreshing it is to see some openness there instead of provincialism.

IMUA (ONWARD) christian soldiers?
"So if you decide to eat at Chick Fil-A, do so with the knowledge that some portion of your profit goes to fund efforts to spread prejudice against gays and lesbians and deny them equal rights."

The company also gives charitable donations to organizations that have nothing to do with sexual orientation. In 2010 the company's total charitable donations were $6.2 million. If, as reported in the post, $1.9 million went to supposedly "anti-gay" organizations, that means that $4.3 million went to organizations that are not "anti-gay" -- in other words, almost 70 percent of their donations.

Most importantly, I think it's fair to question the wisdom of boycotting businesses merely because they support causes that people disagree with. In his article "Amazon.com vs. Traditional Marriage," conservative Christian Rod Dreher puts it this way:

"Jeff Bezos, the Amazon.com chief, is giving $2.5 million to the campaign to defend Washington state’s gay marriage law from a fall referendum. Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer have both given money to the cause as well.

"Shockingly, a marriage traditionalist like me will continue to buy books from Amazon, and continue to use Microsoft Word for Mac to work on my own book. Why? Because I like their products and services. That, and I am a tolerant person, and I believe that same-sex marriage is an issue on which people can disagree without removing themselves from the company of decent people. Second, I know that my own ability to participate in social and economic life depends on commercial tolerance from others — a tolerance I can’t expect to have if I don’t extend."

Dreher is talking about real tolerance, that extends even to people and causes one disagrees with. A "tolerance" that only extends to people and causes we agree with is a phony tolerance -- a tolerance in name only practiced by people who wish to appear tolerant but really are not.
Jay, It never entered my mind to convince you. People with closed minds are as intellectually flexible as doorknobs. I merely stated that your preferences have causing great harm to people who have harmed nobody. It seems you are content with that. I am not.
Jan, if I were as you so conveniently labeled would I be here?
Jan, I just read your first two sentences again from your last post, I am just starting to get your humor.
Great post, Ryan. Keep being "noisy" as Green Heron said.

I'm with Jan. I'm sorry mishima666 but tolerance for bigotry is not warranted.
Tolerance for intolerance is not tolerance - it's support for intolerance. (We just went thru all that on another parallel subject this weekend.)
