Bigots are Bigots, Haters are Haters

Rate: 25 Flag

Ah, "Blazing Saddles"!  One of my favorite movies and one of the best satirical pieces on bigotry and hate ever written.

In this scene the Mayor of Rock Ridge talks about how he and the "school marm" have worked to deal with their "problem".

(only watch about the first 40 seconds)

Now watch the first 40 seconds of the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix as he espouses the bigotry and hate exemplified by the Catholic Church because St. Joesph's hospital had the temerity to save a woman's life.

If you listen further you'll also get to hear him discribe the great horrors of St. Joe's committing the egregious sin of providing condoms and birth control too (listen to how he can't even pronounce "condom"  - that cracked me up!  ;)  )

Is it just me or can anyone else see the similarity between the bigoted hateful Mayor and the bigoted hateful Bishop?

The resemblance between the two is uncanny. The bishop comes off as a gentle, pious man, but if you listen to what he says rather than how he says it, the hate is the same.
I tend to be careful about labeling groups or people as bigots. We are complex individuals with our own prejudices and beliefs, the important thing is to let reason triumph over irrationality. I am agnostic myself, and I say, Catholics can live the way they choose, but the rest of us have the same right.

But the two videos are strikingly similar. Good catch there.
ethical, religious, teachings of the church... ethical? Na. Religious, most definitely. Teachings? Right.
Cancerous uterus? Is that what it takes to get an abortion?
Ex-communicate her!
Violations of the directives!
Let me explain.
Mercy care plan?
back to the ethical directives.
contraceptive counseling? DO NOT USE CONTRACEPTION!
admitted to evil actions? condooms?
decree decree! NOT CATHOLIC. God forbid.
Thank you.
And oh, happy holidays to you and the girls!
Is that Gen. Patton in the lower right hand corner of the bishop's vid?
I heard a comment on TV the other night and all it said was how the biggest sin was speaking FOR God... Seems to me that is right and why do churches insist on interpreting the Bible in this way, in these times, boggles my mind.
I hope you and your girls are going to have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS Amy!!
Matt, I think that's Tomás de Torquemada, which seems appropriate enough.
Dude, that is jacked up. (Love blazing saddles though, LOL)

-R-
Love "Blazing Saddles." The other guy, not so much. xoxo to you and your girls.~r
Tomás de Torquemada or Cortez the merciful?
You sure that's not an staute of Saint Benedict - the patron saint of pedophiles????
St. Benedicts birth control plan, as passed down through the ages...

Never spill seed into the flesh of any other than a choir boy.
Good post. Uncanny, love blazing saddles.... Happy Holidays to you!
Seems that her last comment described this loser in a dress perfectly.
Those frock buttons ought to go up past his filthy, hate filled mouth.

Here's a pic of him in

THE RECTUMRY
This is a priceless if somewhat creepy juxtaposition. While the mayor in Blazing Saddles was a charicature, the Bishop is real and horrific, in part because of his lack of any trace of sarcasm. He is, instead, a living sarcasm. Beautiful but chilling post -- as well is should be. Rated!

Take this as it was meant
Are you absolutely CERTAIN that the objection to the sheriff wasn't that his last name wasn't “Johnson?”

As to the Catholic Church.
All us protestants have known since Martin Luther that those people (Catholic Church) are the Whore of Babylon and represent the Anti-Christ.

As to Jackass Fundamentalist Protestants who align themselves with the Catholic Church, (even though as protestants they should know better) They've missed the whole point of “PROTESTant”
You go to hell in your own hand basket, no one else's.

As a “putative” Pentecostal Christian ( I know what that means, not many others do)
I believe Christ came to teach us that you make your own communication with God,
(Or deal with the Devil)
It is no one else's business.
Want help to understand?
We'll give it to you.
Want “condemnation” and Forgiveness for your sins?
You have to forgive yourself.
Want love as a fellow human being?
That's the only thing Christ told us to do

The Good Bishop may as well try to order back the waves, as Excommunicate me from my God.
As such he is an object of Humor
And a certain amount of Pity
Be Larger than he is
Don't Hate.
I want to know how that Bishop can say "Peace Be With You" without lightning striking him on the spot.

Anyway, hugs.
I heard all about that hospital from a friend of mine and now they are going to lose funding because of it.
awful..:(
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU TOO AND YOURS..
LOVE AND MUCH HUGS
Never did like the god-fearing types. What are they so scared of anyway? And if you have to deal with one, make sure you get it in writing.

honestly I couldn't watch it past the first bit. I feel cold fear when likable people promote hate. They make me more nervous than a mob of screamers.
& Merry Holiday to ya Amy!
While "Blazing Saddles" is a film, with its extremes calculated to make people laugh by its writers (which was not only Mel Brooks , but Richard Pryor as well). The bishop is exerting his power to reinforce his own bigotry. Well, we can't force religion to change, and really as has been said before the church is what it is and that is what scares me most. I had to shut it down, I have a bunch of grandkids to be Santa for today and Santa shouldn't be pissed off on Christmas.
Wonder where Bishop Bullshit's sermon is on pedophilia in the Catholic Church? Maybe they should spend some time cleaning up their own house before preaching to others about how to clean theirs. I can't see how a reasonable person could sit through such hypocritical, hateful drivel.

Blazing Saddles was super funny and still is. I would like to see a remake with Obama playing the part of the sheriff and the Republican side of the Senate playing the rest of the parts. Then you could see them act out their true bigoted selves.

Merry Christmas!
I just had to get to "ethical religious teachings" and realize this must be a parody - or the best oxymoron I've heard all year.
All those bigoted hateful idiots look alike to me too.
Happy New Year in spite of them.
yep, this is one of the many reasons i ran screaming from church so many, many years ago...
Though I am resolutely pro-choice, I don't find these videos similar. I do not define a fetus as a human being (though late term may get ambiguous as we approach viability, a distinction drawn, believe it or not, by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade), but the Catholic Church does - they believe that human life begins at conception.

If you believe that human life begins at conception, then you believe that voluntarily allowing a human fetus to die is the moral equivalent of allowing what we would define as a human being to die and, by extention, killing a fetus voluntarily is the moral equivalent of killing what we would define as a human being voluntarily - i.e. murder or at least manslaughter.

The position of defining human life as beginning at conception is one that, to me, doesn't make a whole lot of sense for a variety of reasons. In addition to the oddities of defining a microscopic clump of cells as a person and of not recognizing, say, pre-conception sperm cells as potential human lives (the vast majority of which die even during successful conception as a result of the way we were presumably designed by our Creator), there are the behavioral inconsistencies, such as the fact that I've never heard of a funeral service for a miscarriage (though I may just be ill-informed). There is, further, the more than distinct possibility that defining human life as beginning at conception may owe more to males wanting to exert more control over the carrying of children to term than to compassion for the unborn.

All that being said: If that's your case, make it. I wouldn't advise simply assuming it. This guy is following Church doctrine and probably believes he's divinely obligated to do exactly what he's doing; he may very well be acting quite literally out of conscience. Failing to recognize his issue may mobilize the troops but it won't shake any of the opposition loose. To have a prayer of doing that (sorry about that choice of words), you have to make your case.
Blazing saddles still rules...
If I hated all Israelis the way you do and claimed the Jews are lying about being the main (but not the only) focus of the Holocaust, I'd not go around proclaiming bigotry here and yon.
Bigots are Bigots, Haters are Haters

Well, maybe you DO know, being one yourself.
Wow ... I think you nailed it.
As a lifelong Catholic - though non-believing and non-practicing (LOL!) - I can only say that the bishop's "declaration" points out the fact that the ones who get to be bishops are generally the least qualified.

Surely some accommodation could have been reached. The church hierarchy continues to distance itself from the 21st century.

In fact, with the last two popes it has actually regressed.
I think the Mayor is a Bishop, or maybe it's the other way around.
