"All the world is birthday cake, so take a piece, but not too much." George Harrison
Today is Flag Day. And my birthday. Donald Trump's birthday too. Plus a few other celebs, living and dead. Big whoop.
It bothers me that Flag Day isn't a bigger whoop, but there you go, welcome to the American Way. Celebrity trumps history every time.
Frankly, Boomer birthdays become less cause for celebration every year. At least I'm younger than Trump. And not married to him. Blech.
Still, I'll go through the day with that delicious sense of entitlement we all feel on our birthdays. And the knowledge that I'm married to a good man who loves me. A lot.
My husband tries every year to make this day special. Rarely a surprise. Better. His goal is to give me something I truly want.
One year he and a contractor friend built me the perfect walk-in closet, to my exact specifications. I'm not showing too much, especially the custom shoe racks (ahem). It's not polite to brag. Even on your birthday.

A few years back, he got us a treadmill. Hey, I want him to stay healthy too.

The next year, I got my iPod. Inscribed on the back, "Now you can tune me out all the time."
The year after that, iPod speakers for the treadmill. Believe me, it's endorphin heaven pounding along to the blasting music, looking out at our beautiful garden.

Last year, he planted a peach tree in that garden for me. All summer long I get my pick of juicy, delicious peaches. They're just starting to ripen now.
These might not seem like romantic gifts, but hey, anybody can buy roses or jewelry without much thought. My guy asks --or figures out-- what I most want or need, then does his best to give it to me.
That, my friends, is true love. Thoughtful. Responsive. Personal. Lasting. The real deal.
This birthday he got seriously creative.
For years I've had a set of china coffee mugs. I love them. They fit my hand perfectly, are curved to caress my lips at just the right pitch. When I slip my fingers into the "trigger" handles and take my first sip, I sigh with pleasure.

My niece Karen gave them to me. There were originally 12, now I'm down to 4, one of which is cracked. They aren't made any more, neither of us could find them anywhere. A few came close, but too heavy and thick.

A small thing, I know, but morning coffee is sacred to me. Those dwindling cups are special. Everybody knows not to use 'Sally's mugs.'
My sweetie took the cracked one to a local artist, a sculptor and potter, and commissioned her create 12 new mugs by hand.
He told me about it a couple weeks ago because she made some beautiful samples for him to bring home. I tried each one, sent them back as she asked with notes on size, shape, balance, handle placement, weight.
Go ahead, call me Goldilocks, those are the things that make my mugs just right.
I don't have them yet because now the artist is invested in getting them perfect. She's determined to give me exactly what I want. Because my husband told her how much it means to him to make me happy.
Yeah. I know how lucky I am.
For us, it really is the thought that counts.
So whenever he brings them home we'll celebrate my birthday all over again. Of course without my getting any older.
For the record, my son --a chip off the old block-- gave me a new monitor this year. He wanted it to be for Mother's Day, but I insisted we combine it with my birthday too.
I'll get calls, emails, cards from family and friends today. Maybe a few nice comments from my friends here too.
Tonight, at my request, my husband, son and I will grill steaks and corn on the cob and share a quiet dinner of just we three.
What can I say, I'm easy to please. Especially when I'm gifted with love.
Here's a little gift for Your Birthday too: FamousBirthdays.com
PS I know there are a lot of people --too many-- not as fortunate as I am. I hope this post isn't seen as bragging and doesn't cause pain to anyone. I really do cherish my luck (and frankly, hard work too). I wish the same happiness for everybody, every day of the year.

I love how your husband is so thoughtful about gift giving. Mine is too. We are lucky ones!
I don't think you are Goldilocks, you know what makes you happy, this is half of the battle...won!!
Have a beautiful night!
There have been several June birthdays on OS so far this month. Mine was June 3 and my husband gave me a pair of Persephone's earrings. I did a post on them because they are so beautiful.
Best wishes for many more!!
denese
Dorella, we're on the same page. Thanks a lot for your good wishes.
Roger, I swear, I've only been married once, so I'm NOT your ex-wife! :)
Buffy, we are lucky, it's good we know it. Thank you and have a great trip, Miss Hula Queen.
jane, there are some good ones out there. Not perfect, believe me, but after 27 years of training, not too shabby.
life, how lucky you are to get P13 originals! Sorry I missed your birthday, HBD to you too!
denese, sometimes good news is at such a premium it has to be shared.
Happy Birthday!!
consonants, I love the i-Pod inscription too. His sense of humor is one of my favorite things about him.
And, um, Everybody.... what, I don't get RATINGS for my birthday?! Jeez, they don't cost anything either. Ahem, didn't I just write how much it's the thought that counts? heh

Hey, I have a nice big cake up there... where's Freaky?
Kisses,
Marcela
I (still) can't figure out if there's a button somewhere for rating posts so I'll just gerry-rig it here and say...
RATED FOR FABULOUSNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much love from Cindy Lou
PS You and Frank paint such a wonderful picture of a loving couple in my mind. Your love is also super-rated for extra fabulousness.

OK... I hit the button. The thumb icon changed from 19 to 20 so here goes...
And as easygoing as I am about most material stuff, I'm really fussy about mugs, too, so I both could relate and be envious of your gift. I got the Perfect Mug(tm) years ago at a seconds sale of handmade pottery and used it for many years before it bit the dust. Fortunately, my niece made me a mug for Christmas a year ago that's well nigh perfect and I drink out of it every AM and guard it with my life.
No need to apologize for your good fortunes. Hopefully everyone realizes that there are downturns as well as upturns (and you've certainly had your share of downturns and then some).
Love ya, Sally. May we be fortunate enough to celebrate many more birthdays here on OS with you. :-D
Marcela, JK, Sheepie, thanks so much for the good wishes.
LuluandPhoebe, I'm just a few million ahead of you, how did I miss your great post? Yes, that's a Bennington mug, their current heavy model. They made my original thin and light ones too but no longer produce them. :(
Cindy Lou, (hooby, folks, she really 'knew me when') thank you so much! A lot going on here, will call and fill you in. Love you lots!
Verbal, I have a feeling Mr. Remedy knows what a good thing he has too. Remember, they just need a leetle teeny bit of training...
Silkstone and Michael, I'm not surprised we all share Mug Love. :) Thanks for the kind words.
Stellaa and Duanert and patricia and Suzn, mega ditto thanks.
Mrs. M, you want one? Hmm... I wasn't kidding but am now wondering if peach trees can survive in TX? We have an apple tree too. Yum.
Bill, Mary, Roger, thanks so much to three great friends, I feel better already. Blushing a little but still, enjoying your Comment Love. So much on the plate, it was nice to have one day of my own. And from you guys I got two!
P&P, never too late for a B-Day message!
Mrs. M, have you never heard of Jersey Peaches? They don't come any sweeter, firmer, juicier or more delicious (besides me ;) ... Right up there with Jersey Tomatoes and Jersey Corn. Beth Mann knows. You can come visit and I'll get you addicted too.
She starts six months in advance to tell me she has a birthday coming up.
by the way, marykelly has a birthday on Oct 22'-ed, So do a few other here.
Curly Howard has a birthday too, and marykelly and I share the same-same birthday date.
