How many of you watch the party candidate debates, carried by one station? 1 - 2 - 3- uh, yeah, thought so.
How many of you watch the football season opener? Can't count the hands but thank you.
President Obama promised to speak on jobs and the economy THIS NEXT WEEK. He's a man that does his best to keep his promises. Too early, people would be coming off the Labor Day weekend, and Congress would still be coming back from vacation. Too late, people won't tune in because of the weekend.
Speaker Boehner knew the request would be coming, for at least several weeks. And he knew what day would be requested. He rubbed together his happy hands and got ready. He publicly dissed the president, and turned him down for the less busy day. President Obama will now speak on Thursday, to a much, much larger crowd, because the speech will be made just before the season opener, on all network channels, and more people will be curious, because of the uproar. Then they'll sit back and watch their football - and there will be no time for a rebuttal in the same evening. Football fans won't stand for it. Boehner will have to wait a week.
In the meantime the Republican debate will probably not have a bigger crowd than it would have in the first place. It would have, had he spoken the same night.
Got it?
Stop criticizing the president for occasionally playing a political advantage. It's part of the territory. When politicians continually play politics on your collarbone, it's occasionally okay to turn it right around on them.
Home team advantage.
