Venice Beach...A Day at the "Zoo".

Rate: 13 Flag

I was angry today; angry at  the news, at the Wisconsin  republican senate, at the news from Michigan. I couldn't help but think that had we not defeated Meg Whitman's election here in California, we might be facing the same battles. We really DO have  a budget crisis, but no one is trying to declare  martial law over it.

I went for a walk. I don't live far from Venice Beach, and when the weather is nice, there isn't a better place to gain perspective.  I always take photos.  The unique thing about Venice Beach is that if any of the "characters" that frequent the area were to show up anywhere else, they would be regarded as dangerous or at the very least, odd. Taken all together, in the context of an animated street scene on a Thursday afternoon,  everything seemed to fit.

I couldn't help but think of the intolerance that abounds now in our world.  If these people were to walk the streets of, say, Madison or Iowa City, they would likely be hauled in and at least questioned. But the tourists come here to see them, and it's all acceptance and smiles and will you take a picture with me. Kind of like a day at the Zoo.

But these are real people, most of them harmless, many of them making  an actual living, but they fit in nowhere else. They have their spot on the sidewalk, or they skate up and down playing any variety of musical instruments. There is very little police presence, although the police ARE there. I never feel unsafe. I don't think anyone does. Everyone does their own thing, and we all get along.

You can find anything here.  Cannibus "doctors", tattoos, jewelry, sidewalk art,  weird T-shirts, animal acts, Muscle Beach guys working out. Scattered among the  street people..are the other street people. The actual homeless.  They bother no one, and they are more accepted here than anywhere else.

And then I get to go home.   I get to leave it all there, return when the mood strikes me or when the weather is once again gorgeous. They are there, day in, day out.

I came home still angry--the news is still on,  the democracy our founding fathers thought they had nailed down over 250 years ago now in jeopardy.  I wonder how many of the people I just left behind on Venice  Beach even have a clue about that.

I wonder what the future holds for any of us.

Taking orders for weird t shirts..anyone have any favorites you can't find anywhere else? Seriously, it was a beautiful day today, and I am glad I got out into the sun and fresh air.
I like characters!! This was a good post and the photos were so fun. Let's hope America can recover from all this stuff and get back to being the home of the free.
You and me both, Zanelle!
So, Naomi, we're practically neighbors. I am in Culver city.
Satori, I am so jealous! You know, I'm a native Californian...I only left about 4 years ago...Venice Beach...Dogtown...those are my stomping grounds! Oh, it looks so wonderful...lucky you...thank you for sharing your day...xox
Come back and stomp any time, Robin! We can go "be" characters!!
I need to get out too but this was grand.. One shot of Oxygen to go please..
rated with hugs
Certainly Linda . Would you like that with a breast milk back?
That would never happen FC..nothing on earth includes everyone...except, as they say, death and taxes.
i love the boardwalk. it is an experience. i can't do it with a hangover. great pics btw!
Just got up and saw this....
CONGRATS ON THE EP>>:)
Thank you Jackson! A hangover? Ouch!☺
GULP..Thanks Linda. I actually didn't know until you told me. ☺
lovely to revisit a favorite spot of mine, thanks!
bbd...thanks for visiting!
Life on a totally far out dimension - I didn't even know existed. Is this when I should say 'C'est la vie'? Thanks, Satori for this new perspective and congratulations for the EP.
♥R
I LOVE Venice Beach! I'd live there in a NY minute!
You and your camera need to get out more often. Earned yourself an EP, Miss Thing! Yay! I would love Venice Beach, too.

Lezlie
i love venice & go as often as i can. i think many of the 'characters' are more mainstream then most might suspect. chat them up & you find that many have children & spouses and car payments etc just like the rest of us. they just happen to have unique jobs is all.
@ Fusun..we have lots of delicious secrets here..lol
@ Deborah--well, come visit!
@Lezlie.Thanks..and yes you would love it, I think!
@Lorianne. You are right. They are just --interesting--people!
I love that they can still exist somewhere! I would love to walk venice beach sometime. Very cool post. I hope it helped a very dark time seem not quite so dark even if for a little while.
@ Lunchlady..Thank you. I think that somehow I miscommunicated..at least to some..about my feelings for the day. I did not write THIS in anger. What upset me was the political situation in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana..and now it seems, Pennsylvania. I tend to get very caught up in it. I went to the beach to get perspective. I strolled, I photographed, I mused. I worry about these people, I wonder about them, I marvel at their survival instincts. They do not trouble themselves with politics. When I got home, the news was still the same, but my day had been blessed with an oasis of sorts. There was no anger at all in writing of this..and yes, it DID lighten what seems a dark time now in our nation.
Congratulations on the cover, Satori! xox
Thanks Robin! I didn't even see it, Linda had to tell me. LOL

Heh--OK, Art..I will work on a translation..meanwhile, thanks!
A very good thing I did this yesterday- there is no calm in the seas today.
one of the best place in the country to rollerbade, too. I did it a few times & felt eternity in an hour.
Yes, runs right next to the bike path that stretches down the coast. Except weekends are so crowded you can't even walk now..and dogs are only allowed on weekdays because they get stepped all over and panic.
These folks look like the characters on Jackson Square in New Orleans and a far cry from South Beach. Maybe being 'one toke over the line' is the only way to deal with the present reality. R
Rodney--they do, don't they. As for me..I prefer to keep my few remaining wits..but you might have something there.
great pics, great post...ahh.... i do so miss the west coast!! and yes, the abundance of tolerance.... we have little pockets of it here in new jersey, but it just ain't the same!!

@Notbabette..thanks..yes, I am from the Philly/Jersey area, father's side in PA, Mother's side across the river in NJ. So I get back there fairly frequently. Heck, my cousins are characters of the most colorful kind! Thanks for reading
I really enjoyed this...as a Michigan resident with the sword hanging over my head these days, I am in need of a sunny day on Venice Beach.
It IS pretty there. I went there the day BEFORE the Tsunami surf hit us. Things can sure change in a flash.
Michigan's situation is appalling. Wisconsin is getting most of the news, but I have been keeping up on Michigan--and Pennsylvania as well, where my brother is. and on the others in line for the domino effect. You are in my heart and my prayers. Try to get some sleep!
