New Interview, Same Palin

Rate: 34 Flag

The big news is this fake campaign suspension.  I say fake because, well, McCain hasn't stopped meeting with campaign supporters and his ads are still running and none of his offices seem to be sending people home (at least I assume that's true, if the talking points about the suspension are to be believed).  McCain's poll numbers told him he should look for the closest bunker in which to ride out the storm, and he chose the Capitol Building.  Rah rah.

The interesting thing I saw today was the Katie Couric-Sarah Palin interview.  If I'd seen this performance, I'd suspend my campaign, too:

The highlights, for me, are the way she repeats herself (much like the earlier Gibson interview) when she doesn't know what she's talking about (here, with the answer about Rick Davis that was clearly scripted) and this little tidbit at the end:

Couric: But he's been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more.

Palin: He's also known as the maverick though, taking shots from his own party, and certainly taking shots from the other party. Trying to get people to understand what he's been talking about - the need to reform government.

Couric: But can you give me any other concrete examples? Because I know you've said Barack Obama is a lot of talk and no action. Can you give me any other examples in his 26 years of John McCain truly taking a stand on this?

Palin: I can give you examples of things that John McCain has done, that has shown his foresight, his pragmatism, and his leadership abilities. And that is what America needs today.

Couric: I'm just going to ask you one more time - not to belabor the point. Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation.

Palin: I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you.

Umm.... anyone want to bet on when she's gonna get those regulations over to Katie?  Anyone?  I'm thinking never.

Does Sarah Palin know who she's running with?  Has she met John McCain? Even I know this guy is anti-regulation, and (though apparently I'm nearly qualified) I certainly didn't get called to be his VP.

But maybe this week is going to be my week after all.

Tell me this isn't real. Are the Republicans finally melting down or is that just wishful thinking on my part? But these are the first cracks in their ramparts I've seen ... oh in dog years.

First, Paulson yesterday lays the financial mess on the door of "antiquated regulations" and implies they need more .
This from the party of the deregulation guy who gave us the S&L mess (anyone heard from Grover Norquist lately?). And today they are running again on anti-regulation? And she'll submit her homework late to Couric? And Lil Mac is in hiding?

Oh my furs and whiskers, this is quite delicious! Awright, awright, the fat basso hasn't sung yet :-).

WOOF
I defy anyone to watch this interview and tell me they'd feel comfortable with someone this incoherent and inarticulate representing the United States should something happen to McCain. I cringe at the thought of our diplomacy being carried on this way... Horrifying.
Shame on Katie Couric for her sexist questions! Whatever happened to "respect and deference"?
Strangely, CCC, I think they're trying to run both on anti-regulation, AKA McCain's experience, and pro-regulation, AKA the present, at the same time. You can see how well it's working out. The "antiquated regulations" bit was repeated in Bush's speech tonight, and I think it's supposed to be a have-it-both-ways comment -- so some will hear it as "we need to abolish those policies" while others hear "we need more regulation." Politically beautiful; really inept.

Kent, yeah, I was a little stunned myself.

And Mortimer, ha, yes, the whole thing is so very unladylike.
She is an embarrassment to GOP women who have a lot more experience and ability than Palin. Kay Bailey Hutchison is probably pretty pissed.
I could only tolerate the first couple of minutes (I don't gawk at highway accidents, either), but here's my favorite part of that, edited down to the essence:

Palin: The interesting thing in the last couple of days that I have seen is that Americans are waiting to see what John McCain will do on this proposal. They're not waiting to see what Barack Obama is going to do...

Couric: But polls have shown that Sen. Obama has actually gotten a boost as a result of this latest crisis, with more people feeling that he can handle the situation better than John McCain.

Palin: I'm not looking at poll numbers.

Oh... my... God. "I'm seeing that Americans think X." "Polls show the opposite." "I don't care about numbers."
Hopefully, this upturn in the polls is indicative of Americans actually recognizing that Sarah and John are just giving them lip service. Frankly, I'm not a bit surprised at the inability of the Replicans to articulate any facts to support their premises - it is damn hard to keep the rain out when your house is made of smoke.
I can't think of a better word at the moment than Kent used - horrifying indeed.
Rob, just caught your comment. It is the same gimmick that they've been using since the beginning of the campaign. They're trying to, through sheer force of will, bend this election their way - and it isn't working.
This isn't "Election 2008" for the Replicans - it's "Deflection 2008".
All I can say is God Save Us from a McCain presidency. And, hopefully, if Obama, that I never have to see or hear about Sarah Palin again...
I think I see why McCain is trying to postpone the VP debate.

Caveat Canem Croceum: "Tell me this isn't real. Are the Republicans finally melting down or is that just wishful thinking on my part? But these are the first cracks in their ramparts I've seen ... oh in dog years."

There have always been cracks in their ramparts. For some reason, MediaCorp hasn't been quite as diligent lately about mortaring up all the cracks for them. I find it a little puzzling.
Wow. I have a newfound respect for Katie Couric.

Thanks for bringing the interview to our attention; otherwise, I surely would have missed it.

As for Palin, she is truly delusional if she thinks Americans are looking to John McCain, superhero, to solve this crisis.
Well, I, for one, am self-righteously incensed--incensed, I say!!--that nasty Katie Couric set up poor Sarah Palin that way. Couric had obviously gone out and dug up some facts and background information or whatever you call it, and sprang it on Sarah Palin without any warning. What happened to the basic common decency of submitting the questions ahead of time and letting Ms. Palin bring her notecards with her to the Interview.

Damn librul media.
Game over. Obama will win in a landslide, should the election go forward as scheduled.
That was cringe inducing. And lpsrocks - yes! I thought Katie was good -really went after her, but without appearing to 'go after her' if you know what I mean. Very well done.

No one watching this could maintain confidence in Palin, no matter how irrational your reasons for wanting to vote for her are.
Susan: " Couric had obviously gone out and dug up some facts and background information or whatever you call it"

damn that's funny
Neil said "...I also hope they think a rube shoudn't be the POTUS."

My first thought was that it didn't stop GWB from getting into the White House two times.

I've said before--It takes a village of idiots to elect the village idiot.

In this case though, I think people will see through the tokenism and realize that Palin should not be allowed near the White House.
I'm glad there haven't been many interviews with Palin. At this point it's just sad to see, like watching a double amputee attempting the pole vault, and even when they put the bar all the way down she still can't make it over.
bbd's "It takes a village of idiots to elect the village idiot" best take on our electorate since Thomas Frank's "morons of Kansas".

And the caption under the picture of a befuddled-looking John McCain (in today's chopped tree Boston Globe) reads: " John McCain cited the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in calling for a new display of patriotism." You can't make this kinda stuff up.

WOOF
I am as giddy as anyone at the impending implosion of the McCain/Palin campaign. However, I was equally as disgusted at Couric at the moment she referenced Obama's poll numbers -- specifically at the patronizing smirk on her face.

Go back and watch the interview with no sound. In that one polarizing instant, Couric undid everything she might have done to actually enlighten anyone. I have little respect for Couric's journalism skills, and this interview only reinforced by opinions of her.
Btw, Saturn, just for yuks (and was it yucky) I went to Grover's site. I wouldn't recommend the experience. He opposesThe Trillion Dollar Bailout, putting th blame on a conspiracy of Democrats, labor unions and left-wing political activists!!! I tellya, you can't make this sorta stuff up.
I absolutely LOVE how Palin squirmed and gave the SAME canned answer to Couric when they were talking as they were walking around. It's obvious Palin didn't know what the hell she was talking about and had been a canned answer to use. She didn't know what to say, so she squirmed and slithererd around until she finally gave the same damn canned answer!!!

I also LOVE how when Couric asked repeatedly for specific examples of how McCain has been working for more regulation, Palin stated something like, "He's a MAVERICK, though, and therefore Americans will believe in him to do the right thing"... even when he has no intentions of doing the right thing, because he's all for dregulation... or some bullshit answer like that.

*#%*&%#*(&%#... if those 2 clowns (sorry, clowns)... if those 2 cartoon characters get into office, I'll have just one word coming out of my mouth...

IDIOCRACY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me predict the future if McCain were to win.

Soon after January 20, 2009 there will be some form of family crisis and Sarah Palin will resign and Joe Lieberman will be tabbed as Vice-President under the Twenty-Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.
Where are the Republican women who surely must be horrified and angry about this? I feel like I'm watching someone in junior high school.

This latest interview with Katie Couric is riveting in the sense that it is so unbelievable. I'm morbid--I've probably watched this clip a dozen times.
P.S. I watched Katie Couric's interview on the CBS morning show. She was saying without rolling on the floor that Sarah Palin is a composed and cool candidate. Honestly, does being a journalist mean that you can't state the obvious? I was embarrassed for Katie Couric.
The transcript as quoted above isn't true to the facts. The actual words Palin used were "takin', tryin', talkin' and "I'll bring 'em to ya."

It's like she's really pushing hard for the ignorant cracker vote. Hey, it works in Alaska.
Amen, Wayne. And apropos to nothing I thought I'd post a comment from on of my equally trenchant buds Chris Ryan, who hasn't posted for a while : "I spent two summers in Alaska. Coming in second in the Miss Alaska contest is nothing to brag about. Once you disqualify all the strippers they fly into Anchorage and the oil zones, there's not much left without a mustache."

WOOF
Wayne, brilliant and important observation.
Really, she reminded me of Dana Carvey's parody of George H.W. Bush in the debate sketch with Jon Lovitz's Mike Dukakis. You remember: Bush (Carvey) got asked a question, and he just spewed out a list of talking points in the hopes that that was enough ("So let me just say, in conclusion: Stay the course, be prudent, thousand points of light. Thank you.").

Hey, I can memorize a bunch of talking points, too; can *I* go live in the Naval Observatory now?
You know sometimes I just feel sorry for her. Yes, Palin's in way over her head and she brought this on herself, but on a human level it's still painful to watch.

I don't think Henry Higgins will win the bet this time.
Darnit, brother dog, I was just working on a Palin/Pygmalion/My Fair Lady parody! But you got there first -- take it and run.

The resemblance is frighteningly uncanny, no?

WOOF
Leslie Ford,

The difference between Biden and Palin is experience, vetting, public knowledge of who the guy actually is. Oh, and while he may commit some gaffe's, not knowing doodley-squat about the world he lives in isn't one of his shortcomings. That would be Palin's. She hasn't been anywhere, she doesn't know anything about other cultures and she isn't capable of the level of nuanced understanding that world affairs requires. She is icing on an old, stale McCain cake.

In sharp contrast, Joe Biden offers an alternative viewpoint to Barrack Obama's, he's isn't a member of the peanut gallery or a follower, he offers genuine knowledge, support and partnership in getting through the mess that the Republicans have left in their corruption laced wake.
"I defy anyone to watch this interview and tell me they'd feel comfortable with someone this incoherent and inarticulate representing the United States "-stole this from Kent

Don't we already have a boob running our country? ;)
Did anyone see the clip from the continuation of this farcical "interview" in which Palin tries, unsuccessfully, to explain why Alaska's proximity to Russia really does equate to foreign policy experience? It's incoherent, but basically comes down to "our neighbors are foreign countries." This is so embarrassing.
Sarah Palin = Lisa Doolittle.

I'm workin' on the song parodies now -
"All I want is to bomb somewhere, Lots of kiddies and polar bears, With one enormous pair, Oh wouldn't it be loverly!"
I always pick the wrong moments to step away from the Internet! But how wonderful to come back and find so much fabulous discussion. Particularly, Mary, your point -- that Couric has described Palin as composed and cool, when she so clearly is neither, is exactly as you say: embarrassing.

And Mind in Peril, you know, I did see some unflattering parallels between Palin's stiff, here's-what-I-memorized answers and our president's stiff, here's-what-they-told-me-to-say delivery in last night's address.

I worry not just for the country, but for the modern Republican party.
Just you wait Joseph Biden, just you wait!
You'll speak well, but your words'll be too late!
You'll seem wise and I'll seem a dummy. Will I help you? Don't be funny.
Just you wait, Joseph Biden, just you wait!...

Then they'll march you, Joseph Biden to the wall
And First Dude , he'll tell me: Sarah, sound the call.'
As they raise their rifles higher, I'll shout 'Ready! Aim! Fire!'
Oh-ho-ho, Joseph Biden, Down you'll go, Joseph Biden.
Just you wait!

OK, the rhyme and meter are a little tortured, I'm still trying to figure a way to work "Caribou Barbie" in to one of the other numbers.
Ooops, the "Will I help you" should read "Will it help you"
John, that's amazing! New campaign theme song! You've got to put that up on your own blog so I can thumbs-up it pronto.
Saturn, I'm working a deal with Sondheim on a musical based on the '08 Republican campaign. We're trying to determine if it will be tragedy, or farce - although I suppose if they get elected it'll be both.
Ugh.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I didn't like "Fargo" the first time.
After its run on Broadway, perhaps Rob Marshall can make the movie? I think we all know who gets to play Sarah Palin.
She makes Katie Couric look like a serious reporter. Nuf said.
Oh, I forgot. Cheney said, "Polls don't matter." Palin agrees. Scarey.
Yes, I do wonder if she's been studying the current VP's playbook a little too closely.
That's the problem with hanging out a joint like this. You think everybody is of a like mind, it's reassuring as hell. Then comes election day and guess what, the country is still half full of people who go for that aw shucks American Pie bluster of McCaine and Sarah's wonderful Annie Oakley routine. Who would've thought!
Keep in mind, the elections of 2000 and 2004 were stolen.
I know Jodi already mention that she didn't like "Fargo", but I was thinking about offering it to the Coen brothers, they are kind of hit-or-miss though.
I agree, there is a huge disconnect often between the places that I go for discussion and the actual discussion in the country, which leaves me feeling... shocked, come November. I hope that's not the case again (whatever the reason, Samm).
Samm:
totally stolen...
I've been watching the dissolution of our civil liberties and our Constitution, the false flag 9/11 that has yielded death and destruction ( over 1.2 Million dead Iraqis) home and abroad and now US troops http://www.prisonplanet.com/us-troops-in-homeland-crowd-control-patrols-from-october-1st.html are coming home for "crowd control." We may not have an election. Be prepared for anything. And stock a little extra food.
Sandra wrote:I thought Katie was good -really went after her, but without appearing to 'go after her' if you know what I mean. That's exactly what I thought.

John Steiner -- did you steal my brilliant idea? Just kidding.

Actually, my thought is similar except I think it will happen just prior to the election. Sarah Palin will be pulled for some family reason, or any 'ole reason Republican style, and replaced with Joe Lieberman.

I don't think the Republican ticket will make it through to January, but maybe you are correct. Sarah Palin has a lot of Neptune transits happening in her astrology chart through October and well into next year.

She may be deceiving us, but it is more likely that she is being deceived by either her partner, business associates, and/or "open enemies". The latter two could easily be other members of the Republican party! The energy is most definitely male as well. We will see!

At any rate, Saturn, I am more than a little embarrassed to listen to her. I want to feel pity, but I don't think she would care one way or the other what I thought or felt! Great post!!
Bravo, Brother John, Bravo! And that was quick too! 3 woofs.

WOOF.WOOF.WOOF
Why is everyone talking about Palin and NOT The Mentalist?!!!!!

That show looks sweet!
Lalucas, I think I've decided it's better to stick with the ticket that exists than the alternative -- which I think might be Romney. (eek!)
bbd,
I've said before--It takes a village of idiots to elect the village idiot.

My youngest son contends that it takes a brother in the Governor's mansion.
Meowoman,

I think a LOT of Republican women must be furious with McCain for picking Palin. I disagree profoundly with Condoleezza Rice and her performance as Secretary of State, but she is nevertheless a woman who has been around the block a few times before she gave GWB a long lease on her soul. She is respected, and has or had, some real world gravitas. She's traveled, she's met with world leaders. Elevating Palin as the VEEP choice is a great slap in the face to all Republican women who can think and speak coherently. I mean, why not Liddy Dole? Why not Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Olympia Snowe? If I were one of them I'd be sticking pins in my little wax John McCain figure for having embraced a witless rightwinger like Palin.
