Updated: Hi, I'm Jenn.

It's never been that hard to figure out who I am. I don't mean this in an existential way -- I'm a writer, after all, I need some mystery in the world -- but in a purely practical way. For the whole time I've been writing at Open Salon, my real name has been at most two clicks away from this very page.  But I think to most readers here, I've been a planet instead of a person -- a purple neon image of saturn. That has been terribly cool.

I'm still going to use that image, but today, I'm putting a name to the rings. Hi. I'm Jenn.

This isn't a confession born from trouble or pressure; it's not spurred by  soul-searching about the rightness of anonymity. It's much more selfish than that. I have a piece up at Salon today, under my real name, and it seemed as good a time as any to merge my identities and start using the real name everywhere.

I will miss the alliteration of Saturn Smith. In fact, I'll miss many things about this lovely planet I've inhabited. But it's probably time to come to Earth.

So how's the weather down here today?

---

A bit of an update, 2/5/10: After a day or two of soul-searching, a nice discussion of practicalities with a friend, and also a few jarring and wacky contacts via my personal e-mail, I'm going to put Saturn back as my OS name -- but my real name is now very easily discoverable in the bio portion of this page.  I hope this will discourage, a bit, the random clutter while still allowing anyone who wants to know my real name to find it very, very easily.

I can't thank everyone enough for the kind "introductions" and continuing friendship and discussion here! But I will try: Thank you.

 ~Jenn

Hi, Jenn! I'm Amanda :D
greetings Jenn and congratulations...
And wasn't Saturn not even your first planetary choice?
Hi Jenn. I'm not really an OEsheepdog, but I like a Jenn with two "n"s. Welcome. I'm glad it's not Gen.
Well good deal. I remember when you wanted Jupiter Jones but it was "taken." Off to read your Jenn piece on Salon. Congrats.
True confessions. When I first started blogging on OS, I thought 'Saturn Smith' was a guy. I quickly learned otherwise. Kathy Riordan. Pleased to meet you.
Hi Jenn. I really am Brian.
Hi Jenn, I'm off to read your piece at Salon.

Brie (Barbara)
Hello, everyone. And thanks. (And yeah, Jupiter Jones was my first choice, but I went Saturny instead).
You'll always be Saturn Smith in our hearts, Jenn ;)
Glad to see you here among us mere mortals!
Hi Jenn,

Please to meet you. I've always been who I say I am.
Hi Jenn - great piece.

And btw, I'm Lisa.
Great piece, Jenn. Hope to see more of you in Salon.
Good for you. I tend to discount content under fictitious names, and not to read nomme de plume blogs. Then I remember--oh, yeah, Mark Twain.
You mean your name really isn't Saturn Smith? Dang. Another myth shattered.

Congrats on the piece on Big Salon. Good work!

Congrats on the piece on Big Salon. Good work!
Hi Jenn. I'm still the monkey in the room with a typewriter. Nice piece in Mama Salon.
Just think, you've lost about 48 moons and some really cool rings, but you've gained quite a following as Jenn!
Welcome to planet Earth. We hope you stay a while.
I don't believe you. I think you're really O'Really...
Hi, Jenn., you ol' midwestern cohort, you!

I'm Con. Or Conn. aka ConnieMack. Nice to meet you, but like many others, I'll miss Miss Saturn Smith.
I am everyone, Skeptic, don't you know?

Tim, I'm liking Earth so far. I wish there was more chocolate, though.
Hi Jenn! Welcome under a different name.

I'm froggy. Rest assured, I have a real name. I'm in the witness protection program (so my children won't know I'm blogging about them).
Hey Jenn, good to know you by name. Love reading your blog.
Gowno! That saturn thing had such a ring... Always dug the vibe Jenn, my pleasure...RRR
Hi Jenn! Wishing you continued success on the salons.
hey there--whatever name you wear, you are truly talented--congrats on the big salon piece (one of many to come i'm sure)...oh, and i'm--well, for now i'm still mistercomedy, but you may have emboldened me to start posting under an actual name...hmmm...
Nice to meetcha, Jenn!
Oh, I do love a coming out! Hello, Jenn.
Yeaaaaa! How bout posting the vid of Kerry interviewing you? Would be way cool. Congrats on the salon piece -- and where's the link to that?? Jeez, Jenn, let's have some respectable self-promotion here. heh
I jumped in here to see who had the nerve to steal Saturn's rings. Glad that it was you. Nice to (re)-meet you, Jenn!
Hi, Jenn. I'm happy to see you getting published under whatever name you choose. And congrats on the Big Salon story. :)
I am thrilled you are on Salon as Jenn. I expect to see you interviewed by Maddow very soon ;0)
Darn. Just as I was adopting the pen name, Jupiter.
Greetings, Jenn! Nice to finally meet you. :-)
Requiescat in pace, Saturn Smith. I, for one, will miss you.
Ah well, I'm impressed. Who needs to be an old planet when you can be on the REAL Salon!
Pleased to make yer acquaintance. I'm Rova Garrison.
well...
it could have been worse, eileen porchnick, and i'm jenn kepka too.
just kidding. i love what you write and always seek it out. a rose and a jenn, well you know how that goes
Hi Jenn, I'm Cranky. (Saturn's a cool name though.)
Great piece on Salon today.
Hi Jenn, I would be Melissa, even while hiding pitifully behind my cat. But I still like your Saturn Avatar.
Jolly-good Jenn, and welcome to the real unreal world -- I'm still Tom.
I like your writing all the same Jenn! Hi.
Howdy, Jenn! Your writing and reporting will not change, I hope. It's so good.

This make me bold. Perhaps I will come out too. My real name is...dare I ?...Ebenezer Hubblebub III.

Hm. I think I'll stick with Greg.
Jenn:

I'm glad you've embraced your name as you further evolve as a writer. I went to AU (SIS '98), and I thought your description of campus was spot on. What an odd little universe AU was. The funny thing was, the few conservative students I met there have all gone on to big things in state and national politics. I think their experience at AU probably turned them into sharper thinkers than if they'd gone to Pepperdine or where ever. In any case, welcome back, and I'm looking forward to reading more from you.

A star (or other celestial entity) by any other name would shine as brightly. I figure Archie Leech, Leslie King Jr, & Charles Dodgson will be remembered for their work - not their appellation.
I continue to look forward to your insightful take on things - whatever your byline.
Joe
Thank you so much, everyone, for the kind response. It's particularly nice as I'm feeling a bit of switching remorse today -- I miss Saturn already! :)
Welcome Jenn. Nice to see you here.
Hi Jenn! I'm Nicole. Congrats on the piece at the grown-up table. I love your work.
I loved the Saturn moniker, too, but I'm glad you're breaking into the "big time" -- you well deserve it. I'll look forward to seeing more of your writing on big Salon as well as here. congrats!!
Forgot to add...that link to your Salon article above isn't working. I was able to find your article by looking in the News section under your name, but you may want to update it so it works.
I wanted to comment on this yesterday, but salon was down.

I'm glad you've gone back to Saturn Smith. And congrats on your Salon article.
