Idris Elba aims not to be a loser

Rate: 2 Flag

Not exactly sure what to make of this Idris Elba profile in The New York Times today. Elba, the star of “The Wire” and the movie “Obsessed,” comes off as both a focused businessman and, well, kind of a jerk. I’m not sure any of that matters in how I see him as an actor, because Idris Elba is good enough that I don’t see him, the actor, in anything — I see the character he’s playing, whether it’s Stringer Bell or Guy #2 (Tango, IMDB says) in “American Gangster.”

What’s interesting in this profile, though, is that the writer constructs a kind of negative picture of the guy — as though there’s something to be studied, something unnatural, about his insistence on seeing acting as his job, not his life:

Though in real life Mr. Elba’s jaunty accent comes from East London, not Baltimore, in a phone interview from his Florida home he sounded much like the driven Stringer, who ran heroin-distribution meetings according to Robert’s Rules of Order. Stringer had no interest in cred-building gangster posturing, and Mr. Elba has little patience for the actor’s equivalent: endless prattling about art and the corresponding reluctance to speak frankly about one’s own ambitions.

Idris Elba is in the Idris Elba business. And he seems as interested in talking about the game beyond the game — the step-by-step process of becoming a star — as he is in talking about the action comedy “The Losers,” out on Friday.

You can almost feel the writer’s glee as, after talking about Elba is so professional and focused, he includes quote after quote that could be potentially damaging — Elba criticizing James Gandolfini’s career path, Elba “systematically” courting audiences, Elba wishing for Johnny Depp’s career.

It’s an interesting twist, an attempt to write a non-standard profile. I’m not convinced this desire to treat becoming a celebrity as a career goal is something that’s unique to Elba, though, and it’s weird to see the entire piece framed that way, instead of having it focus on the obvious available testaments to his talent.

A reader who goes into this piece having never seen Idris Elba in anything would, I think, be a little less inclined to seek him out in the next thing, which is a shame.

I have mixed feelings when artists begin to believe there’s a mathematical path to success, but what Elba’s talking about isn’t the path to artistic success, it’s the path to material, professional success.  I’d be happy to see Elba succeed (and yeah, I’m looking forward to “Thor”), but I’m not terribly entertained by the Times’s attempt to turn his efforts at that into something that’s exceptional and a little scorn-worthy.

I read that piece with great interest too, not only because he's so totally smokin'. But just last week I was catching up on the season of The Office I missed, and watched the commentary on a couple of the episodes he was in. The writers, producers, other actors had barely a word to say about this guy, other than a vaguely snide comment about him being a DJ, which tells he wasn't widely liked. So maybe there's something a little offputting about him, and maybe there was a reason they killed him so early on The Wire. And frankly criticizing James Galdolfini for continuing one of the most iconic roles on American Television. As though somehow you're better because you were in some trashy movie with Beyoncé? That's something a 19 year old would say.

Again, too bad, because he is astonishingly hot.
Even for those of us impervious to his hotness, he was the best thing in Obessed.... not sure that he makes it worth watching though.
And in his defense, he was pretty funny in The Office, whether people liked him or not. The one thing In the profile I found interesting is it sounds like he's got a quirky side, which would explain his interest in Johnny Depp. But he does seem to get type cast as the intense, serious, ambitious black guy. I'll be interested to see if there's another side of his acting that emerges in next few year.
I read the same article and was left with the impression of things not said about the man himself...wonder how he comes off in person?
Disappointing when we learn that someone whose characters we hope would be on our side are people we wouldn't enjoy being friends with. He's an insightful and compelling actor, though. I would probably watch him make a peanut butter sandwich and think it was powerful.
Ah, Juliet, I think you figured out what was bothering me about this piece -- the writer was casting him as the intense, serious, ambitious black guy, and comparing his ambition to Stringer Bell's. Something about a writer comparing a successful black actor's career striving to that of a drug king pin was very off-putting.

Maureenow, if that PB sandwich video ever leaks, I'll bring the popcorn!
I think you're right Saturn. It would have been more interesting if the writer had mined a little deeper and explored the possibility that he was little eccentric and quirky , instead of an ambitious super sexy heroin dealer. And the James Gandolfini quote is just the kind of thing that always gets taken out of context.

I got the sense that the article was trying to deflate him a bit. He may or may not be a likeable guy, but he's definitely an insightful and compelling actor and seriously hot. Would I enjoy watching him again in another good role? Hell yes!
I ran into this page accidentally, surprisingly, this is a amazing website. The site owner has carried out a superb job of putting it together, the info here is really insightful. You just secured yourself a guarenteed reader. London Hotels-http://www.stayinlondon.net/
