The Great American Noblre..,I Mean Novel

Rate: 37 Flag

 Man-Typing-on-Computer-Keyboard

I'm back, and as the old joke goes, 'Boy, are my arm's tired! Although it's only been 5 days. It feels more like 6, maybe even, 7 days. I missed my "peep's". Hey, don't look like that, I got some peeps, but, I did miss OS. This place is like home. and leaving, if only for a few days, is tough. I couldn't help but keep an eye on some people, and I read a few blogs, but didn't comment much, and really, I didn't have time. I had only 7 days to finish editing the next Great American Novel, or I would have to pay for the program I ran it through. Yep, I'm cheap.

I'll tell you how this program works. First, as everyone knows, I never attended college. Believe me, it's something I think of everyday, and I would of had a free ride. My dad was a veteran and died while serving, so I would have gotten paid to go. Yeah, I was a serious fuck-up, but you know this, right? Having never taken a creative writing class, or any English Lit courses since high school, and even then, I did not write anything, and over 30 years, you forget. Man, do you forget! There are a million rules, when writing the English language, that I did not know three years ago, when I first started this blog.

The first people on OS that read my writings , who are still around anyway, are probably falling off their chair's right now. They were, TERRIBLE! But, as I look back, and re-read it, even with the hundreds of mistakes, the imagination I'd had since I was a wee lad, was still there. I wrote stories in my head for over 50 years, I just needed to learn how to put it to paper. Matt did a great piece about this on Viewshound today. The internet, has opened up writing to the masses, and that, more than anything, is what I think the internet has done for society.

OK, OK, I'm getting to it. The Program? Grammarcy has a wonderful site, that has a program you can purchase, at various prices, of course, that you can run your stuff through. Everything that has ever been taught in the English language (and other languages) will pop up. It will not do it for you, unfortunately, but it explains what you did wrong, and I did not know how stupid I really was. Man...,

The deal is, you get a 7-Day Free Trial, and then they take the money for the program you bought, out of you bank account, or PayPal account. I was lucky enough to win a couple bucks writing some stuff on Viewshound, and figured, what the hell. But, I also figured, I had somewhere between 50 and 60 thousand words to edit. Surely a hard worker, such as myself, could do that in, 7 days. I did it in 5, but I swear, I was working 10 hours a day, and I loved it! Loved it.

Never has a dumb-ass such as myself, learned so much, in so little time. I started writing the book about a year ago, and I could see the progress I had made, from reading your posts on OS. I have devoured everything, every great writer on OS, has written since I've been here. This was where I learned to write, but Grammarcy taught me a thousand little things I did not know. I will always write, now. If only to amuse myself, which will probably be the case. But, to learn to write, and to be understood, is one of the gifts we are given. I won't waste it again.

The book has two ending's now, and I have about 10,000 more words I need to add. I got this from asking Google, of course. How long is the average fiction novel? According to:

http://artsandhumanities.blog.my/2011/10/how-long-is-the-average-fiction-story/

Up to 1000 words= short storyflash fiction
1000-6000 words= short story
6000-15000 words= long story/ novelette
15000-45000 words= novella

45000-120000= novel (commonly between 50000 and 80000)

I already have a novel. But, I do not care about the length, I want every paragraph to KILL. I want the reader, to not be able to put it down, like I have done so many times. That, my friends, is hard to do, and the people who do it are few and far between. I know my first effort will not accomplish this, but, I had forgotten some of what I had written a year ago, and I had a hard time editing and not jumping ahead.

So, that's what I have been doing, I hope to have it finished in about 6 months. Finished, finished, finished, because I don't think you can ever finish a novel. There are always things you want to change, and I probably will.Writing is hard work, but the thrill you get when you hit Publish, is better than any drug I have ever done. Thanks, Guys~

Godspeed, scanner.

You were one of the first to comment on my work here, (along with placebostudman) and I have had the first hand joy of seeing you grow both technically and spiritually. You and Candace and cartouche are going forward and I so admire you all for it!
Your determination and hard work will soon reward you, Scanner. I've admired your tenacity and imagination ever since I started reading you and I have seen the progress in your writing. You know you have a friend here you can ask whenever you want an opinion.
♥R
I am so proud of you. You sure remind me of Edward Abbey. I hope you have read some of his stuff. Of course the great thing about you, Scanner, is that you are an original. You follow stories that are inside you and you spill your guts. Thanks for writing this post.
Lin, I had to comment on your post. You are the funniest person on OS. You make me laugh all the time, I love it~
Fusun, you my friend are a great teacher, and OS is the better for it.
Z, never heard of Edward Abbey, but that will not be the case in a minute or two. Thank you for the great compliment~
My heart and soul are right there with you, Scanner. I am one who has read you for years (I read on OS from its inception before I signed up to comment and post last fall) and witnessed your astonishing improvement. Your brilliance always shined but now technically you are right where you need to be so keep at it and the literary world is at your doorstep.
Well, ScanMan, glad to see the spark that put you on my favourites list all that time ago has developed into a raging inferno. Go for it.

BTW, one of the finest writers/editors I know never went to university. Don't let the lack of a formal "education" make you think you missed something.
You're an inspiration to us all Scanman. I mean it, from the tips of my gnarly toes to the comb atop my silly head. You're an inspiration to us all. Keep at it, friend. You're almost there! And thanks for the tip about Grammarcy, of which I knew nuttink.
So pleased you're back. R.
When you publish a book, I will actually buy it.

Maybe even in hard cover.
I thought it was easy to write a book and had a lot of it written. NOPE.. I say Christmas before all the editing is done hahaha
BUT no sense rushing it..
I cannot wait to see this Scanner.
HUGGGGGGG
Miguela Holt y Roybal ( I love copying that), thank you. You are no slouch yourself.
Boaner, sometimes it seems like like people take you down a peg, when they find out. Many do not know, now, but I really try and not worry about it. Thank for stopping by~
CM, you don't need no Grammarcy. You my friend are already a great writer. Stick to feedin' those chickens and save your money!
Jon, thanks buddy~
Kosher, it would be my honer to give you one, signed, if I can get it published. (don't count on it, hah)
Linda,it's the the hardest thing I've ever done. It's like operating on your baby. One slip, and AAHHaahh~~
Way to go Scanner; the Dude abides. :0
And certainly consider all of your publishing options - look at it like selling a car - know what you want for a price, and then know what you actually have to have. In other words, aim for the publishing house (ya never know what will strike their fancy at any given sales period), but failing that for this first novel, know how/where to publish it that will draw the most attention/online sales from readers to build a reputation (that might then attract a publisher :).

Rated for it's not the college degree, it's the smarts, which you got :).
Scribble..... Scribble........ Scribble.............(*pant, pant, pant*)

Back to work dude - no slacking off in this outfit!

Scanner-I'm hoping for the best for you and your novel. Your appeal is that you are an Everyman, honest, idealistic, and willing to open yourself up to criticism and to make yourself vulnerable. Good on you, scanner.
Writing well is a tough gig. You don't need a college degree to write well, my friend. I'm a firm believer that quality is more important than quantity.
way to go scanman! i read stuff by people who havent lived. it smells of it - even if the grammer is perfect. we write because we must - some must make a buck - some must to heal - some must for vanity
but who cares ! introspection has kept me alive -and writing is the pond we see ourselves in. You have changed more than your writing style in three years - you have learned a craft - and introspected the hell out of yourself. write on brau!
Congratulations and good luck publishing your novel. Your desire to write and be published is an inspiration to all of us. R
Well "good on you" as I hear the younger folks say.
Although your learning curve has been steep it sounds as if you've been up to it. I admire you for getting out there and learning things and taking the risk to write and be read and reviewed. Whether or not you realize it, you are already a success.
Congratulations. I so admire your tenacity and your writing. -R-
Scan Man: If it makes you feel any better, even with an M.A. in English I did not know an adjective from an adverb before I started teaching ESL, because I had to teach THEM the difference. My dear friend Kat (a non-native speaker) has been teaching 15 years and hiring teachers for 10. When she gets a new teacher, who is new to teaching ESL, she has written a little booklet that she gives us with the basics of grammar. Especially lower level students need to learn this to progress. The only grammar I remember learning in college was in my Latin class. So, the best way to learn how grammar operates is to try to learn a new language because grammar operates differently.

Also, friends are not only cheap, we are free. Don't be shy about asking some folks to read/proof read a chapter or two. Even those who are excellent at grammar and punctuation (another bugger) still make mistakes, but I am sure (and count me in) would be happy to help and give feedback.
Hey, did your program help you with this great quote,
or is this pure raw Scanner?

"Never has a dumb-ass such as myself, learned so much, in so little time." It has a Winston Churchill flair to it. Very nice.

Delighted to hear you are actively pursuing the dream:
you DO write a killer paragraph, that is for sure..
The way I see it, Scanner, is that if you write, you were meant to write. I sometimes think of it as pushups for the brain.
Many heartfelt congratulations to you...your hard work is always so evident to me in your posts. Your sense of humor, and of justice, just shines here.
And your big heart is NEVER, EVER absent. That, in and of itself, is the greatest success of all. Rated with sincere admiration. (I cannot WAIT to read the finished product. Please let us all know how to get a hold of it when it's done...)
Wow, this is great Scanner. Congrats & thanks so much for the info. I am going to run over there right now and check it out (if only I had 7 days) (or a novel) but I digress.
I tip my cap to you. I didn't know about the Grammarcy program, so thanks for the heads up.

More than 1,000,000 words qualifies a book as Epic Medieval Fantasy. Of course you have to write another 5 million words before the publisher will allow you to end the story.
Way to go. Grammarcy is an interesting concept

By the way, those literary units of measure--are they Celsius or Fahrenheit?
Power to your elbows scanner ~ I think care less about the rules ( that's what editors are for ) than what you have to say, & on that count I doubt you have a problem ;-)
In a perfect world, you would publish a book...and it would beautiful because of the content. If you want to know truth, don't look to a writer for grammatical sense. They see and tell stories... fact or fiction. Blessings, Scanner!!
I am so excited!!!!!! You are encouraging me awesomely!!!! Best of everything and keep us in the loop, we are teaching and learning from each other!
I cannot add to what these fine people have said. Good luck, ScanMan, you da man. R
Two thoughts,

I believe grammar works best when ignored. Few will dispute that I live by these words.

Maxine Hong Kingston tells this story about finishing one of her novels. I think it was Woman Warrior. She had a contract for it and the publisher was waiting for it but she kept put them off. She was making revisions and she had written the whole thing by hand on note pads. The publisher offered to send a typist over to help her get it organized while she worked on her revisions. She agreed and the next thing she knew she was looking at galleys. The typist had absconded with her manuscript and taken it back to the impatient publisher. She didn't think she was any where near done with it but publisher disagreed, and so it went to print.

Welcome back Scanner
Cool. I am very intrigued by Grammarcy program . I was phobic about writing until spell check.
snarky, the reason I use Chrome is the spellchek on the comments. I'm the worst typist, speller on OS and have to use it. I have arthritis in my fingers and typing is a bitch. But, Grarammacy is pretty good, and you can work quickly with it. Plus, 7 days free, to try, hah!!
It sounds like you have had an exciting 7 days. For too many excuses to explain, I have taken a hiatis on writing, but I can say that since I started teaching myself to write, I have learned how little I really know. Writing can be such a high...

I look forward to the day you share your 'finished' novel with the world.

Hugs.
Hey, scanner...you got me at noblre, uh I mean, you have the heart and soul of a writer...such hard fearless work!
Wow...sorry for the multiple comments...sent from an iPad... Bad apple moment!
No problem my friend. The more comments, the better, hah! Thanks for stopping by~~~~~
I wasn't around when you first got started so I can't make fun of you for doing bad stuff; well actually I can anyway but won't. However some of the short stories, or what ever you call them, you've written here have been pretty damn good.

Keep it up!

BTW it's never to late to attend UHK if you want to.
You are way ahead of the game; you have something no amount of edjamuhcation could have given you: desire. So write, baby, write! Can't wait to read it.
I knew you could do it. Rated with a Jali Smile. :-)
Almost forgot to kick the cat this morning

Go Scanner Go Scanner! Even since I first read your posts in February your writing has improved! I am so excited for you!
I missed the growing pains and just get to see you now. You do have a way with words, and I see so much emotion in your posts and your comments. You really make editing a novel sound like tons of fun!
Yay!! I love to read this ambitious, gracious, delicious - all kinds of 'ciouses. Good great luck - I'm so happy you've found your voice. You're a pleasure to read.
