2011 ~ Sucked the Big One

Rate: 39 Flag

woman dragged by thugs
Life without Mubarak. A bowl of cherries?

I was thinking about writing something that would put a good spin on 2011. But, for the life of me, I can't find it. Sure, we had small things, like "man pulls baby from burning house", or "dog rescued from freezing river", but that happens all the time. Just rewind every year, and you have those types of things. But, as far as benefiting mankind, all I see is death and disease, and it only gets worse.

Even when you throw in the Arab uprising, the only picture I see, and can't get out of my mind, is Qaddafi being dragged around and murdered. Sure, he deserved it, but I don't have to see it. We are a civilized people, and just because he was murderous pond-scum, does not mean we have to put on a bathing suit and jump in the pond with him. Look at Egypt. It was a great day when Mubarak  was forced from office, but now you have their military dragging women through the streets and beating them. That picture, to me, summed up the whole year.

I guess Andy Rooney lead the, "list of the dead", but really, he was 189, was anyone surprised? Amy Winehouse was 27, the age that many rock stars have died, and people think it's strange. But, and I could be wrong, you could probably go back and find just as many died at 28, or 26, it's coincidental at best. I hate that Jack Kevorkian died. I feel he had a real future ahead of him. Jack LaLanne, the exercise guru, finally bit the dust at 96. I'm starting to feel ill. Elizabeth Taylor. 'Nuff said.

I went to Goggle movies and music, but there was a big warning sign, like this one.

                           Warning~Barrel of bones

I guess that means that the year was shit, as far as great music or movies were concerned. Movies. They are either putting out animated crap, re-do's, like Die Hard 73, or Super Hero movies. (The Green Lantern?) Music? It' was old farts, that were old when I was a kid, making all the money at concerts, and new music? Lady Gaga. "Nuff said.

I wanted so much for President Obama to succeed this year. It was one of the highlights of my life, as I'm sure it was for millions of others, when this man was sworn in as president of the United States. I wrote a piece about it, that I could barely type, from the tears in my eyes. My God, what happened?  George Bush? Barack Obama? The only difference is the color of the man. The philosophical differences, while Obama can charm a wooden snake, is nil. He has killed thousands of innocent people with drones and missile attacks, with the same intelligence that told us there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

When did this country start to indiscriminately assassinate anyone we please, at any time we please, anywhere in the world, we please? I'm not Googling this, but I think it was President Ford that outlawed this nation, from using assassination for any reason. But, we shouldn't have to have a law, to tell us that. We are the United States of America. We, are supposed to be "better", than the rest of the world, when it comes to the rights of man. This is wrong, and I am ashamed of this president for thinking he is God.

We fought for our rights, and one of those rights was the right to demonstrate, peacefully. When I first saw the picture of the woman in the photo, at the top of this page, I thought it was a woman in this country. Maybe Oakland. I had to read further to see that she was from Egypt. After 9-11, billions of dollars were spent on added security for this nation. What I did not know, was that police departments around this country were not buying bomb sniffing dogs and equipment to stop another terrorist attack. They were buying the newest and latest crowd control weapons.

What the hell does this have to do with terrorism? What the hell does this have to do with anything, but politicians using taxpayer money to pay companies like Blackwater and Halliburton to build shit like this.
Peppergun

This my friends, is what this country is coming down to. This, this, whatevertherthellitis, is our kids future. The next time they lay off a good teacher in your district, remember, that one of "whatevertherthellitis" could have probably had paid her salary for a year. I am done. So, how was your 2011? Happy fucking New Year!

I'd like to say it has to get better, can't get any worse...but we'd both know I was lyin'.
So, I'll settle for saying Happy fucking New Year to you, too Scanman, and watch out for that "whatevertherthellitis"!
I hope 2012 is a global lucky number.
Rated for the Johnny Cash clip and your righteous anger.
You know, there will be a number of 2011 summaries written and produced the next day or so. And this one, ScanMan, will be the best. You captured the world-wide manure that was 2011.
Yep, been a crap year. Except for the unintentional comic relief of the GOP candidates, that is. There's a school of thought that says the reason they're sounding like major league whack-jobs is that Obama has pretty much occupied the traditional Republican territory, leaving them screaming out on the margins of reason and sanity. If that's true -- man, what a two-edged sword.
Brilliant as usual. Thank you for saying what had to be said. How bad can this next year be in relation to it all. Sooner of later....we all pay.
Smittee, tomorrow, I will have news so good, you'll have to do your patented, "Snoopy Dance', all over town. Don't break a leg, hah~~~

Thanks for the comments, I'm headin' to the Flea Market, to find me a deal on something. Maybe this year won't be a total waste. Happy New Year everybody~~
I was composing something along the same lines...you said it so much better.

Oh you nailed this one and I am in full accord with you here. Andy Rooney at 189 sounds just about right and the death of rock starsis probably the real truth when it comes to it. Here is to you and yours! Big Time too!
I agree with Walt Blevin's comment.

Now, the real question is are we men or mice? We have let our nation deteriorate to the point where it will take violence to fix it.

Why should I have to worry that my son, when he is old enough to drive, will take a wrong exit and wind up in a part of town where he will be beaten or killed by a third world savage we let into the country because we are too politically correct (and want votes) to get rid of them?

I used to favor a capitalist system, but, when six of the wealthiest people in America have as much money as the bottom THIRD of the U.S. population, then we have a problem.

There was a time when even the most far left or far right had some basic standards of decency and morality. Those days are gone. Greed and selfishness are what America runs on.

Bottom line...............are we men or sheep? Many of you find my views on certain issues abhorrent, but I will fight alongside those of you who understand why we NEED to fight. Our children and our future demand nothing less. I just wish it was left to somebody else to do the fighting------------it isn't, so we must man up.
You're right that there was a lot to lament in 2011 scanner. Even one of the "good news" stories, the recovery and return of Gabby Giffords, only resulted in her being somewhat, rather than substantially, physically diminished. Here's hoping that 2012 is better for all of us.
You are my heroe Scanner.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
HUGGGGGGGG
Agree. Damn this past year and I just think that the coming 20 years will be decline, too. I worry about the next presidents and their grip or ability to lead. I just think, for this momment, that this time from 2008 to 2028 will be called: Decline.

Thank goodness for the little things in life that make you keep on keepin' on. Children's future.
Reading this post was the best catharsis I've had for a while. I agree, that pic at the top summed it up. 2011 was an assualt on everything brave and fragile...cooperation, compassion, composure. If the Goddess is returning, as the pagans believe, it's not without a beating from the odious aggressors.

Johnny Cash is the best ever. I love how complex and faulted he was, and how he transcended it with love, work, and talent. Maybe this is the message for 2012: despite our failings, let's focus all our efforts on what we do right. With laser focus, lets do a handful of things right in 2012.

We have to start somewhere.

Happy 2012.
Scanner, Good post and I agree 2011 sucked. I remain optimistic for 2012 because that's all I can do. What a fabulous video. Thanks for this Scan man. Best to you and yours.
Not a good ending for me that's for sure. R
Indiana is enacting a new rule tomorrow- no more than 3000 people in the statehouse at any one time including the 1700 employees. So if every employee brings a friend to work on the days of controversial legislation then no one from the public can get in to protest. We can't put initiatives on the ballot so we're stuck until the ruling party changes. At least, I hope they scrap it then.

And here is a sincere wish for a better 2012. Cheers!
Here's to a better 2012. Happy New Year, Scanner.
I'm coming up empty too . I guess we all didn't get murdered? Ummm, I guess DNA let some innocent t people out of prison this year.

And, you are right- no good movies or books that I can recall. And, I'd bet that is more a product of the gatekeepers keeping good stuff than due to there being no good books or movies being made.

Amazingly true-- that picture could easily be from our "better" country in 2011.

Fabulous post, Scanner. I'm hoping for more righteous indignation in 2012. As you so wisely said, " I'm mad as hell and I"m taking it up the ass." Man, I loved that.
The best of times, the worst of times. Let 2012 be among the best.
Well, now I'm really depressed. But you're right. Time to get really pissed off I guess, and take action, whatever that may be...
2012 is the big hope for all of us who endured, struggled to survive, and put one foot in front of the other many days. I hope it brings calmness, kindness and simple prosperity to us all. Happy new year, Scanner.
I hear you. Well said.

Oh you know the cycle...it was ugly this year, but next year, well, it's going to be great. Accentuate the positive...
It is definitely a year I'm glad to see the back of.
I love Maureen's comment...and Johnny Cash.
Ring of Fire!
Happy New Year's to you and yours, scanner!
"man pulls baby from burning house", or "dog rescued from freezing river",
these are of archetypal
importance, old boy.

obama is an example of what we love best:
a great man laid low, made to be base & ugly,
then
redemption.

so i prophesy, arg
Mr. Blevins said it. You rock. Happy 2012 to you, Scanner! R
Scanner - 2011 was a year of loss - it sucked the big one. However I have hope for the future because I'm an optimist. I hope 2012 brings you your dearest wishes and dreams!
Why has Gabby Gifford been omitted all night?

Nearly 12 months now.

Foggy in New Jack, Scanny?

Peace, my brother. H N Y S!
remakes, man.

that is the clue, somehow.

nostalgia.

remake what, tho?

i shall labor to remake your favorite movie,
in penance for ruining that t-zone episode.

i am at yer service. for awhile . til i pass out drunk.
Kinda hafta agree with you here, Scanman. Don't want to, but don't have much choice. Feeling sick, but expect to feel sicker. Miracles, anybody?
We can always hope! Here's to a better 2012 to you & Terri. (and all of us)
Hoping your lucky number translates to the 365's ahead! Have a great nude year!
Johnny Cash is right Scanner but until then have a Happy New Year!
my God, what happened?
George Bush? Barack Obama?

The only difference is the color of the man.

The philosophical differences, while Obama can charm a wooden snake, is nil..

so true, scan.

obama says we must proceed with utmost prudence.
and of course caution not to upset the
bloodletting begun by our
forefathers...

never to earn any trust anywhere,
even in his own
nation, this
damn
fool
idiot.

too bad.

by bye o.

see ya on the other side of history.
The way to tell that the picture is not from the US is that the cops have some kind of poles, whereas the American "riot" police have guns and pepper spray. We're number one, dontcha know?

I'll try to hold on to my sanity for another year. You do, too.
There is one thing you can count on, Scanster. No matter how bad things get, no matter how badly they suck, I will still be a fan of yours. Stay mad, but no fair giving up. We are all in this together. So Happy Fuckin' New Year back atcha!

Lezlie
"What I did not know, was that police departments around this country were not buying bomb sniffing dogs and equipment to stop another terrorist attack. They were buying the newest and latest crowd control weapons. "

That's because the next attact will not be from terrorists, my friend. They are afraid of their own citizens as the latter catch unto their schemes and says: "We're mad as Hell, and We won't take this anymore!"

R♥
There's something intrinsically amusing in the dichotomy of holding out hope for the year that is supposed to be the last one to be the best one..

It is New Year's Eve and I do wish for better tomorrows for all of us.

The ether feels a tad odd this evening ;).

Rated for we wait, we watch.
Who knew they sold blue bras in Egypt.
That video was a great way to start the year, thanks Scanner! It made my day. Even in the worst of times, when you look up, you see the same stars. We are all just tiny molecules bumping into each other. I hope you many bumps this year! (Did I bump into you last year ; P
i really hope so!;-)
If you're waiting for "God" to come along and cut down the bad guys; Good luck with that.

If you don't have the guts to cut your own weeds, say good-bye to the Garden of Eden you could have had.

The US government has supplied police departments around the country with FIVE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS worth of military ordnance recently. Much of it drones and tanks. I wonder what that's for.......

(*Yeah. That's my guess too*)
.
Rated for the title alone! Now to read the rest...
scanner, to be accurate it all strated in 2010 and just v=continues...2012, not much in the way of great news. As long as we have our helath? We can onlyhope.
2011 was a living hell all over this God forsaken earth. Heres hope that 2012 will be light to an endless array of heart ache and angony this country went through. Let's believe that 2012 will bring real hope and change in our goverment!
You forgot about the UC Davis pepper-spraying incident -- all over a dozen tents that hadn't been taken down. The officer looked like he was spraying Round-Up on weeds. Nicely done, Scanner.
I'm so with you on Obama. Where did that great inspiring candidate go? 2011 has a weird ring and was for many indeed weird. But since I love even numbers and since things really can but probably won't get worse, why not entertain the illusion that 2011 will indeed get better. It's not up to the pols, it's up to us and I'm trying though easy it ain't. Happy MLK day, Scanner and to everyone here. If each day we refuse negativity, might generate the positive?! R
