The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.

Hurts. I was really overcome by loss seeing this. Has inspired me to go back and work on a post that is dangling. Actually have tears. I rarely cry. Lost them all, or so I thought.
Matt, yeah, it hit's you where it hurts. Ande, he was a Carolina boy, born and bred like me, except I used to run from the law~:-) Ali, Terri is cooler than the North Pole. Yeap, I'm 58 and I still haven't made out my will. Time's a'wastin'. I may leave everything to you. You like dogs, right?
A sweet tribute to a guy who just seemed so genuine. I spent Friday at the home of the man -- he's 90 years old --who whistled the theme song. I'm writing the story up for the newspaper & will probably post it on Tuesday.
The other day I came across a YouTube of Andy Griffith playing and singing the lyrics to the "Andy Griffith Show" theme song. It was really cool: http://youtu.be/X9BvKREK1rU
ScanMan--Add it to this! I was going to post it the other day but figured the feed would be jammed with Andy Griffith "tributes" (which it wasn't) but I played it and was delighted.
Thank you. I wanted someone to whistle with when I heard the news so I could do the harmony line.
I'm almost exactly Ron Howard's age. Never called my father Paw though. My guess is, neither did he.
I found out about Andy's death in a way that was kind of spooky. I was driving my wife and daughter home from an out of town trip and we drove in from the north, early evening July 3. We were on the Pilot Mountain Parkway and I was looking up at Pilot Mountain - known on the TV show as Mt. Pilot, right near Mt. Airy, where I've never been but which Mayberry was modeled after - and wondering if there were any existing photographs of Andy Griffith as a young man up near that mountain, which is really distinctive looking, when my wife looks up from her I-Phone and says "Andy died." We weren't even talking about him. He stayed in-state, living in the Manteo area, Roanoke Island, close to the ocean but really more like the Intercoastal Waterway.
By "distinctive," I mean: http://www.pilotmountain.org/html/photos.html
I don't know if you've ever been to that part of the state. It's above Winston-Salem, not far from the Virginia border.
It was a charming show alright and I was just at the right age to appreciate it. Amusing characters and storylines and even Don Knotts came across well.
SCANNER- I luuuv dogs ! I actually have a collection of collars..I had a sweet little dog once, long dark hair, big cow eyes and the cutest little studded collar you ever saw.. :))
Long before Mayberry and Matlock, Andy starred in Elia Kazan's film "A Face in the Crowd," a scary good movie which strangely predicted the career arcs of folks like Joe Pyne and Rush Limbaugh.
