Scott K is a gay man living in sin with his partner of over twelve years whom he still cannot legally marry. Unite Our Country Again: Put Up A Flag

Rate: 11 Flag
"Americans … sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America."

-Barack Obama, President-Elect

American Flag

Remember how united the country felt after 9/11? Suddenly there were no red or blue states. We were one people, saddened by tragedy, but united as a country.  What happened to that?

Last night history was made. Our country overcame racism and elected our first African-American President. We elected hope and showed that we believe in a better America.

As joyous as we may be, there are those today who are feeling the sting of defeat. For whatever their reasons- be they right or wrong, they chose to support John McCain. As tempting as it may be to gloat today, we must remember that these people are our fellow countrymen and women. They are part of America as well. In his victory speech Obama reached out to them and promised he would hear their voices, need their help, and be their President too.

If America really did change for the better last night and if we really want to support our new President, then we need to lead the effort to bring our country together once more. In that spirit, I am asking you to take down that Obama sign or McCain sign and hang an American flag outside your home. Show your neighbors that you believe we can rise above our differences and be one nation again. Show them that we aren't just liberal or conservative, black or white, urban or rural, young or old, gay or straight, but one people united for a greater good.

Let's be the America that we grew up believing in again.

Scott, I did just that this morning. Much like I did on the afternoon of 9/11/01. The flag seemed to have a brighter color and it blows proudly in the Georgia sky.
That is a fabulous idea, Scott. I am something of a flag waver but somehow the radical right seemed to turn our national symbol in to a banner for hate. I will be proud to begin displaying our flag again. Let us not allow our flag to be hijacked again..

I took your advice and e-mail a copy to everyone on my contacts list. Thanks again.
Great idea Scott. Really, don't know why I didn't think of it. Getting mine out...
My one point of difficulty concerning the flag is that for years now the Republicans co-opted the flag as their symbol of the GOP version of patriotism, so much so that my Austrian husband really though that's all it meant, and I can't blame him. I found the same reaction from the international community during my many travels abroad. The GOP was very successful at "rebranding" the American flag in order to secure it for their followers as a divisive symbol - with the implication (among others) that if you are a pacifist and oppose war then you cannot be a patriot, and in fact you are un-American.

This is the main reason that I created the flag graphic/poster (on my blog) with the words "I Voted for Obama" for anyone to download.

I agree that we all need to show the flag - and not in defiance, but as a symbol for peace and unity. In doing so we will reclaim it and make the flag a symbol for everyone once again.

Perhaps I should make a unity graphic? Something to mull over......
Exactly right, Scott. If we are to truly move forward together, we cannot push the idea of red or blue states; black candidate, or any other form of divisive 'patriotism'.

What matters is that as President Elect Obama alluded to last night - "Out of many, we are one people." Barack Hussein Obama belongs to all our nation, and he represents ALL of us at home and abroad - something we ALL have reason to be proud of.
Thanks for the comments and ratings on the post to everyone who has done so.

Again, I can't stress strongly enough that I'm really trying to start a grassroots movement to make a symbolic gesture to reach out and heal America.

If you could copy and paste the above text and send it to 5 friends, asking them to send it to 5 more, I think the message could really catch on.

It would be a powerful show of support to our new President.
