It seems like they're pretty much ditching the whole concept of a working summer camp amidst the carnage. That's unfortunate, since it always allowed for stupid summer camp humor in between the slicing and dicing. Really, this looks like a completely generic zero-budget HDV 'kids play in the woods and get butchered' horror film, the kind of thing that Lionsgate used to put out on DVD with regularity. Just because the thing is shot on film and contains actual production values doesn't automatically make it that much better than any number of $2 dollar cheapies. On the other hand, I did like Marcus Nispel's Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake (and I loved the sequel), so we'll see. Again, like I've stated before, it's not like they have an uphill battle to improve on the original. To quote Mr. LaFontaine in the trailer for the original, I may only see it once, but that will be enough.
Oh, for comparison's sake, here's the original Friday the 13th trailer, voiced by the legendary, late Don LaFontaine. Pathetically, the 1980 trailer actually looks scarier.

I was very disappointed to discover as I watched it that it was not the least bit scary--and in fact was rather dull and boring. (I did jump when the hand came out from under the bed--but that was it.) Of course, in the first movie there was no 'Jason'--just a mysterious murderer whose identity was obvious to anyone who'd ever seen a movie before. If you had told me then that this film would spawn about a dozen sequels, I would have said you were crazy.
The fact that Jason appears at all in the new film indicates pretty clearly that it is not a literal remake, and that suits me fine. If they're smart, they'll pull elements from the first two films together and crank the intensity up to 11. But--unlike poor young Jason in the deep dark waters of Crystal Lake--I'm not holding my breath.
For the record I have seen all of the movies in the series, my favorite is Part 2, and I loved Freddy vs Jason.
This film spooked me when it came out, I was 15. Today, I laugh. It had it's moments early one in the film. Then about the time the lights go out, so did the suspense.
I imagine this one will have more gratuitous nudity and sex than the first, but that's status quo now.
rated because I had NO idea this was coming out.
Thanks
