 heart

 A bird hit the window

the night we spoke of spirits

in The Vault.

The Vault, a

family secret where

once my aunt,

whose husband

was down in his back,

scrambled

under hidden stairs

to barter wíflác

for her mortgage. The

cunning banker, who tied

and hung white rope,

later knotted his own neck.

Histories were stored

on an upper level

above the shabby couch

where oft I sat atune

to the pick of a Colonel’s  hot guitar.

Sometimes I also nested there

to read and mind-soak

planks of warm and mellow oak.

I did not know

you worked, as you worked

earlier tonight

with your hand upon

your brow, just beyond the

crumbling plaster cutting

lavender glass in residence.

When the bookcase pulled loose

from the playroom wall

shredding sheetrock,

you were telling me of pigeons.

The unwilling cock

when placed into a pairing cage

 attacks the coy hen's flowering.

You seemed to believe that man takes, regardless.

Your strange, fat green-eyed cat

Jumped upon the bed

Where we’d jointly supped wine.

I was stilled and pondering

your mother’s feckless questioning,

Does she cook?

Can she keep a clean house?

My sentient heart falteringly adjusted

to the possibility

of your philandering,

to my mind's wavering,

in this disquieted hour of loves, revisited.

Absolutely beautiful poem. The best I have read today, in a long time.

enigmatic, graceful, compelling
As has already been stated, beautiful and awesome!!!

Of course, rated! :)
a fantastic poem with a shadow of poe. rAted!
Just wonderful . . . eloquent construction and abstract story lines.
Oh my...the stark images you brought to life...just incredible writing, biting, raw, and honest.
I agree with all the comments you've received so far, but I must add that this sharp and elusive poem calls for repeated mind-soaking. An amazing work!
Haunting images:
"You seemed to believe that man takes, regardless." and
"the coy hen's flowering."
Love your writing! Rated
Great poem. Thanks for sharing.
Never have enough synonyms for beautiful and vivid when I'm here. Thanks.
loved the imagery. beautiful.
Powerful and beautiful and also disturbing, in that I can't get the images out of my mind. This does what great poetry is supposed to - emotionally effective (and affecting) with very few words.
Wow. What an amazing poem. Simply beautiful.
You are such a woman, Scupper. So very much a woman.
oh, my. I'm nearly undone.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
How I missed this, I don't know but I'm glad I found it. This is astounding and everything else everyone else said. Wow. Just wow.
I loved this. The words of the poem, about love and history and family and breakage, are seemingly at odds with the beautiful, graceful image of the slugs. I hate the damn things, and I found myself thinking that their mating dance contained the essence of love, which is physical contact, and that love made them beautiful and I loved them for that moment.

I went back and read the poem after watching the video, and it seemed to add meaning. Maybe I just imagined it. Like the video was saying, pay attention to the tactile that underlies the emotional, and find peace in that. It's great that you can write something that turns on the spigot in my mind. I don't know if I understood this at all, but it was a beautiful clue.
I appreciate that you've each taken time to comment. SL, thank you for your attentive read.
First of all...I am amazed that someone had the patience...much less the curiousity to watch two slugs "do-it". Never gave that much thought myself...
Secondly....I am amazed that you would find something like this to attach to your work...well not really amazed...just hilarious!
Thirdly...hmmm man must be a descendant of the slug...penis in close proximity to the brain...
Fourth...I am impressed by their aerial foray
and alas...I must admit that I watched the other youtube videos that popped up...The rhinos, the zebras, 'piggybackin' and GAWD THE STALLION with THE MARE! The llamas...do it differently...now I think I might go ...well you know.
BTW...lovely writing! ;)
Imposter...you are not alone on the watching of the nature vids. Come back again.
