Upon Learning to Draw a Circle

Rate: 31 Flag
circle

All week
I've been drawing circles.
Use  all of your arm
I hear you say.

I've drawn the farmer's empty pots
while sitting in the sun.
Large red clay pots that held
blooming coreopsis
one yellow summer before last.

At dusk,
I drew the farmer's wine glass,
the one he left
sitting on the rail
outside the door.
I watched him from the
porch rocker
amid the field
his hand on hip
resting,  while gathering
winter kale.

Late night,
when I could not shed the day,
I drew parts
of the farmer's grandfather clock,
the moonphase dial
and center weights
of the constant chiming pendulum.

Around three in the morning,
as I lay resting atop a
brown leather Timberlake sofa,
the clamoring of the stove door
roused me. Soon after
I drew concentric spheres
of the farmer's round arse
as he knelt on bended knees
adding dried logs to dying embers
and  of the stable newel post
where he secured his stance
before climbing back to bed.

Oh, I love these circles. I can see those sketches. This is lovely.
Now I am thinking about the many, many signficances of circles . . . this is quite beautiful and rich, like baklava.
Your use of imagery is strong. There is much here for the reader to feast on.
I remember drawing circles in art class where you were instructed to keep drawing over the same circle, again & again. Clockwise, then a new one, counter-clockwise. Never lifting your pencil from the page...
Mesmerizing, almost.
:-)
Perfect. Like a circle. R
beautiful - how to comment ?
maybe : think about your wrist more,
is all I can think of
i used to try and try and could never quite get it right, but you have, scupper, and it's close to perfect. circling the year, bringing it to a close.
Ooooooh...this is so complex...the connection of this shape with what I see as the cycle of nature...of the farmer...beautiful. xox
Loved this, we draw our circles and run around in them after we've drawn them; meanwhile, the wheel turns slowly, but inexorably, and it will inevitably crush us into dust or send us spinning off into a hereafter we can't imagine. Turn, turn, turn.
Circles, circles, circles everywhere.

Rated.
Such good advice, "use all of your arm". Is it in that applying just a little more of your whole self that it comes, this drawing of circles?
To be read again.....and again...
S
Beautiful. Just as circles are.
This is lovely, scupper. I keep reading it over and over.
I love the strength, the fluidity, the energy, the possibility of circles. You captured the link between them all.
"Captured on the carousel of time . . ."

We all keep trying to draw those circles.
Exquisite piece Scupper.
this is so rich and brings so many thoughts to me here.
Every read brings more.
it reflects the circle of life.
You write so well dear.
Lovely, really lovely.
I feel peaceful reading this. Thank you.
Peace. Life. Calm. Humor. Sacred.
You say you draw farmer round arse.
Shame.
Tease.
Beauty.
You draw cleavage you see on farm arse.
The farm field is filled with wine glasses.
The farmer sits in his arse and sips wine.
The blueberry wine glasses get plowed.
One day there will be glasses that grow.
The farmer can sit and be a jolly wino.
I know this is 'off-topic' but you farm.
You hide hymn-porn in underground.
Your lip-syncing words and singsongs.
A farmer ask You to sit downs and sip.
Your worth reading slow with a atlas.
Atlas?
I mean hide erotic memory in a Atlas.
No hide naked photos in farm pants.
No hide chocolate kisses in pockets.
M&M?
Melt
arse
silly

Oh wow I loved this!!!
Great images, truly wonderful poem, especially at this year's end. Thank you!
Love the imagery of this...it's a fine poem, and one that strikes home w the use of drawing as a metaphor. Beautiful..
I can see it all. Nice.
The farmer drew the circle.
scupper,
I absolutely loved this. Thank you for such a fine post.
Rated and appreciated.
Lovely, Lovely poem.

And fascinating, the ill/allusions people have drawn therefrom. Truly revealing, as I suppose it should be.

Just lovely. Thank you.
Love the connections and the poem, the way the poem draws us into the metaphor, adding meaning, personalizing, encouraging us to think of other circles.

Thank you.
Love the imagery of your words! The circles everywhere setting the scene and the feeling of the scene. My favorite line: "Late night,
when I could not shed the day.."
The best circles I've seen were drawn by my organic chemistry professor. On the chalkboard, he drew molecules so large that hundreds of students could see them. Each circle was perfect. That's when I learned that organic chemistry is as much art as science.
Circles, concentric, full, eternal, golden. . .
How many arses are perfectly circular anyway. Good luck with that. Reminds me of a joni mitchell song , I think its called circles.
You know what? You are the first person who ever made me want to be a farmer.

Wanna see a circle? I'll show you a circle.
thanks Scupper, it's always a treat
