I Would Not Go Back

Rate: 15 Flag

RedthroatedLoon23

Green water
still yellow pollen
floating my swollen
belly eight months
to the day.

The boat pulled to
the edge while the two
of you in ball caps kick back
swapping tales of the grand slam
his wife beside me on the
blanket, my cheap plaid shirt
a sail on Tuesday afternoon.

Two rocking horse boys playing sea
dragons across their father's
drunken legs, cans stashed beneath
the rower's seat,
still wet dripping cold.

A sun, bold enough to
stale the March beginning
oddly warmer than
three years before or since.

A photograph captures
what could have been
a beckoning call of some
red-throated loon's mate on
the ridge now rimmed with
black corners
trimmed silent.

Green, yellow, red and black - slosh, slurp and slurred - a plaid shirt like a sail - color me sad.
Beautiful like a fragment, like the photo, like the call of a loon, all gone.
I am not too big on the arranged-
so-called, common law marriages.
I believe they can-may be ordained?
I am silent about most hop subjects?
fun, his wife's beside me. my flannel.

lovely...nice to read you again.
Nice poem. This stands out:
"my cheap plaid shirt
a sail on Tuesday afternoon."
Well done.

enjoyed how this sounds when i read aloud. altogether a tight ekphrasis.
Very descriptive and beautiful photo.
In trying to pick a favorite line, unable. All so interwoven each necessary to weave the entirety into a tapestry of memory and regret (?) perhaps. The loon's cry a thrill or a heartbreak.
Hi scupper. This is like floating into a dream, with no beginning or ending. Your shirt, the sun, and the loon give it a finer texture, and I look for other details, but the poem is so content that I'm lulled away from needing them. What a wonderful afternoon. Thanks.
I like this poem because it says so much beautifully & visually -- I can hear water lapping, guys talking, birds calling. I can feel the sun's warmth, & a kind of sadness. Lovely.
Loons mate for life. Love this poem!!
Wow. You took me there.
*gasp*
what a photo
all I could think of was my favorite story from when I was little "the story of ping"
remember the little duck that hid in the rushes to avoid getting spanked for being the last one back on the boat?
beautiful post
rated for wonderful
The loon, alert, eyes red with the speaker's regret, is elegant, like this poem.
